Description

SYSTEME ELECTRONIQUE DE PRESENTATION SELECTIVE D' INFORMATIONS SUR LIEU DE VENTEELECTRONIC SYSTEM FOR SELECTIVE PRESENTATION OF LOCATION OF SALE INFORMATION
The present invention relates generally to electronic systems for presenting information, particularly at the point of sale. Today, certain electronic systems are known which allow a consumer to take cognizance of certain information on products or services offered at a given point of sale.
When the consumer presses a particular key on the keyboard, the central unit causes the display on the screen of a sequence of still or moving images, accompanied if necessary by a soundtrack.
This system is however disadvantageous in that it requires on the part of the consumer an intervention on a keyboard with keys, which can put him off. A system is also known, in use in supermarkets, which allows the consumer to check the correspondence between the price of a product as displayed on the shelving, and the price as it will actually be taken into account when store checkout. This system includes a barcode reader in front of which the product to be checked is presented, and a display screen making it possible to indicate to the consumer the price currently associated with this product in the central computer of the store. A drawback of this known system is that the information provided is extremely limited, and that it can be used with all of the products in the store. This makes it totally unsuitable for promotional applications, and in particular for selective applications for a given group of products such as products sold under the same brand.
The present invention aims to propose a new information presentation system which can be of a promotional or advertising nature while offering the ease of use permitted by the bar codes carried by the products.
Thus the present invention provides an electronic system for presenting multimedia information concerning products offered at a point of sale, characterized in that it comprises in combination: a central unit, a mass memory containing a series of interactive sequences of still and / or animated images respectively associated with products belonging to a given group of products among all the products offered at the point of sale, a display device constituted by a touch screen making it possible to interact with said sequences, a reader of machine-readable information carried by the products offered for sale, and before which a product can be presented, in that the central unit includes comparator means for comparing a product code, delivered by said reader from '' machine-readable information read on a product presented by a consumer, with a series of product codes corresponding respectively to the products of said group, and in that the central unit is capable of causing the unfolding of the interactive sequence of images associated with the product presented when the product code thereof is contained in said series of product codes, and to display a message of non-correspondence otherwise.
Des aspects préférés, mais non limitatifs, du système selon l'invention sont les suivants :Preferred, but not limiting, aspects of the system according to the invention are as follows:
- le système contient une table de correspondance entre ladite série de codes-produits et les adresses des séquences d'images dans la mémoire de masse. le système comprend également des moyens de diffusion sonore en association avec chaque séquence.the system contains a table of correspondence between said series of product codes and the addresses of the sequences of images in the mass memory. the system also includes means for sound diffusion in association with each sequence.
The system is housed in a housing and in that only the display device and the location of said barcode reader are visible to the consumer. - the product group includes only products of the same brand.
Other aspects, aims and advantages of the present invention will appear better on reading the following detailed description of a preferred embodiment thereof, given by way of example and made with reference to the appended drawing, in which : Figure 1 is a schematic perspective view of an information presentation system according to the invention, Figure 2 is a block diagram of the electronic architecture of the information presentation system, and Figure 3 is a logic diagram illustrating certain functions of the system of FIGS. 1 and 2.
Au- dessous de l'écran est prévu, en arrière de la façade, un dispositif fixe 25 de lecture de codes-à-barres, classique en soi, débouchant sur l'avant du dispositif par une petite ouverture 13.Referring firstly to Figure 1, there is shown an electronic system for presenting information at the point of sale which schematically comprises a housing 10 in the general shape of a tower, for example of a height of the order 2 meters, including a front facade 11 has a window 12 to the right of which is located a display screen 24. The window and the screen are placed at eye level. Below the screen is provided, behind the front, a fixed barcode reading device 25, conventional in itself, opening onto the front of the device through a small opening 13.
Enfin le système comprend des moyens de restitution sonore, via un ou plusieurs haut-parleurs 27, de données de son mémorisées dans la mémoire de masse 23.The central processing unit 20 is also connected, by appropriate input / output or interface devices (not shown), to the display screen 24, for example of the liquid crystal and color type, as well as 'to the barcode reader 25. The system also includes a device 26 for detecting coordinates X, Y superimposed on the screen 24, so as to produce, in a manner entirely conventional per se, a touch screen. Finally, the system comprises means of sound reproduction, via one or more speakers 27, of sound data stored in the mass memory 23.
Advantageously, the architecture described above is built around the conventional organs of a personal computer with the "PC" standard, the barcode reading device being connected to the latter via a serial interface.
We will now describe in detail, with particular reference to Figure 3, the essential features of the system whose structure has been described above.
First of all, the mass memory 23 contains a plurality of sequences of fixed and / or animated images, respectively associated with a series of products from the same manufacturer or from the same group of manufacturers.
Each of these sequences is identified by an address which is correlated, using an appropriate table, with the product code of the product concerned by the sequence. They may in particular be promotional or explanatory sequences relating to each of the products.
Furthermore, the central processing unit 20 is designed to compare the product code delivered by the reading device 25 each time a product is presented for reading in front of it, with the list of product codes of the aforementioned series of products. The flow diagram of FIG. 3 illustrates a "start" box 31, followed by a test box 32 in which the system is placed in wait for a product code delivered by the reading device 25. This code is transmitted to the central unit 20 by the device 25 as soon as a user has placed a product, and more precisely the side of the packaging of this product on which is printed his standard barcode (UPC or EAN code), at right of the opening 13 of the facade, and that the device 25 was able to read this code.
The product code is then stored in the RAM 21, and the central unit compares it with those contained in the sequence access table (box 34).
In the case where the product code is absent from this table, then the central unit 20 causes (box 35) the display on the screen 24 of a message, fixed or animated, extracted from the mass memory 23 and indicating to the consumer that the product does not belong to those who may be affected by the system. In other words, the consumer is informed that the product is not a product of the brand or brands with which the display is associated.
The system then waits for a new barcode reading. If on the contrary the brand of the product presented by the consumer corresponds well to the attributions of the display, that is to say if its product code is contained in the access table to the presentation sequences, then the central unit 20 selects this sequence (box 36) then causes it to run on the screen 24 (box 37), the corresponding soundtrack being played by the speaker 27. At the end of the sequence, the system returns to its starting state.
It will be observed here that the sequences broadcast on the screen can be interactive sequences, allowing the user, using his finger acting on the detection device X, Y, to make selections allowing him to navigate in the sequence, choose the broadcast language, etc.
Furthermore, the system can advantageously include images or reception sequences, broadcast during the waiting phase for a product code, making it possible to indicate to the consumer the family or families of products concerned by the display, and to explain how it works. The present invention applies in particular to advertising and promotion at the point of sale, by allowing, in association with the use of the universal product code present on each of the articles displayed for sale, to associate the display stand only a given family of products, for example those sold under the same trademark.
The invention thus finds a particularly advantageous application in the field of cosmetic, perfumery or hygiene products. Of course, the invention is in no way limited to the embodiment described above and shown in the drawings, but a person skilled in the art will know how to make any variant or modification in accordance with his spirit.
In particular, while the identification of the products offered for sale has been described above as being carried out using a barcode, it may alternatively be any machine-readable code in particular by optical, magnetic, radio waves, etc.
