Abstract

A process for producing 5-methylindolines of general formula (1), (wherein R1 is hydrogen or lower alkyl), characterized by catalytically hydrogenating 5-formylindolines of general formula (2) (wherein R1 is hydrogen or lower alkyl; and R2 is hydrogen, lower alkyl or lower alkoxyl) in the presence of a palladium catalyst in an inert solvent.
