Definitions

  • the invention relates to a method and device for verifying ownership of articles according to the preamble of the independent claims.
  • a system of this type has been described in EP-A-710 934 and comprises affixing a first unique number to an article and a second unique number, cryptographically derived from the first one, to an unforgeable certificate. This has the advantage that the owner of an article can be identified by being in possession of the unforgeable certificate.
  • the problem to be solved by the current invention lies in improving this known system to provide higher security. This problem is solved by the method and device according to the independent claims.
  • the system according to the invention also relies on two numbers, one affixed to the article to be protected, the other imprinted and/or stored electronically (e.g. magnetic strip, chip) on an owner certificate attributed to the article.
  • the numbers can e.g. be any alphanumeric numbers, such as strings of digits and/or letters.
  • an enquirer wants to verify the correspondence of the article and certification numbers, he has to provide both these numbers.
  • the system checks if the two numbers are attributed to the same article and provides the enquirer e.g. with a yes/no result.
  • the system according to the invention provides higher security because it requires entry of both numbers before an enquiry is processed. It is therefore e.g. impossible to forge an owner certificate for an article because the certification number cannot be obtained by the thief or forger. Nor can an article number be obtained from the certification number alone.
  • the certification and article numbers of each article should be chosen such that they substantially cannot be derived from each other by the enquirer. Preferably, they are chosen using random or pseudo-random algorithms.
  • a storage is provided for storing a current owner or an owner history for each article. This provides increased security against fraud. In addition to this, an owner history can be valuable for tracking sales channels and marketing mechanisms.
  • means for establishing cryptographically secure connections with the enquirer can be provided.
  • the verification mechanism can be accessed world wide through the Internet using conventional protocols, such as http, telnet or e-mail.
  • the system according to the invention can be used for any type of owned, transferable articles, such as precious objects, objects of art or bearer shares.
  • a security mechanism such as it is e.g. shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
  • Figs. 1 and 2 show schematically an article 1, which carries an article number 2 affixed thereto.
  • Article number 2 can e.g. be imprinted upon, embossed or engraved in or otherwise connected to the article in such a way that it is difficult to remove or delete.
  • the owner of article 1 also possesses an ownership certificate 3 carrying a certification number 4.
  • Ownership certificate 3 is a security document provided with conventional security features, such as a hologram or a fine printed pattern 5 and/or media (e.g. magnetic strip or chips) for electronically storing a certification number, that make it difficult to forge or copy.
  • Both, article number 2 and certification number 4 are e.g. alphanumeric strings of several digits or characters. They are both attributed to the same article, e.g. by the article's manufacturer after its production. Preferably, they are both at least in part generated by random or pseudo-random algorithms such that one number cannot be easily derived by the other, at least not by a member of the public. The numbers should be unique for each article.
  • Storage 7 holds a list of all issued pairs of certification and article numbers.
  • Verification of the authenticity of the certification and article numbers e.g. takes place when the article is sold.
  • the potential buyer uses a computer 10 to access a secure web server 8 through the Internet 9 using conventional display and security protocols.
  • Secure web server 8 is able to establish a secure connection to computer 10, which connection positively identifies server and client and provides cryptographically encoded data exchange between them, e.g. by using known methods involving asymmetric public and private key pairs.
  • Secure web server 8 is connected to manufacturer's computer 6 for querying its data base of stored article and certification numbers.
  • the process for verifying the authenticity of a given pair of article and certification numbers as carried out by secure web server 8, computer 6 and storage 7 is depicted in Fig. 4.
  • step A first the article and certification numbers are received (step 20). Only when both these numbers have been entered, verification continues at step 22 by searching the data base in storage 7 for a pair of matching numbers. If a match is found (step 24), the validity of the entered pair of numbers is confirmed in step 26, e.g. by sending a corresponding web page to computer 7. If no match is found, it must be assumed that the pair of entered numbers is incorrect and validity is denied in step 28. Operation ends and point B.
  • the enquirer can only query the data base in storage 7 by entering both numbers. In particular, it is not possible to enter only one of the numbers and receive the second number as a result. As mentioned above, this makes forging ownership certificates or articles very difficult.
  • Access to secure web server 8 and the verification mechanism of Fig. 4 should be available for any person or institution who has a need for verifying an article's ownership.
  • the Internet is preferred as a medium for linking the enquirer to the data base because of its world wide availability and standardisation. However, access might also be provided via voice or data phone connection or other mechanisms.
  • storage 7 may be provided not only with a list of certification and article numbers but also with a list of owners and the owner history.
  • Fig. 5 shows an example of the data that can be held by storage 7.
  • Column 1 contains the article numbers, column 2 the certification numbers, column 3 the current users, and column 4 a list of all recorded transferrals of ownership. Each row holds the data for one article.
