Description
The invention relates to a method for producing mineral and paper fiber-based insulation boards by slurrying mineral fibers, binders and conventional additives in water, shaping the insulation board by applying the slurry to a sieve, drying and solidifying the insulation board.
Such panels, provided with decorative surfaces, are mainly used in suspended ceilings or wall panels for acoustic insulation of rooms. However, they are also used in structural fire protection, especially as door panels and cladding for beams and supports in steel structures as well as ventilation and electrical wiring ducts.
The plates mentioned are manufactured in a so-called wet process. A strongly aqueous slurry of preferably mineral wool, paper fibers, starch, clay and kaolin is provided, which part of the water is removed on a sieve by suction. The sieve cake thus created is then passed into an oven in which the residual water evaporates at an elevated temperature. At the same time, the starch gel hardens by drying and creates a firm connection between the intersecting mineral and paper fibers.
In order to achieve faster dewatering on the machine screen, non-ionic surfactants are added to the aqueous slurry (also to reduce the density by the foam produced). However, this addition of surfactant has the disadvantage that after drying a highly hydrophilic component remains in the plates. The individual disadvantages are as follows:
After grinding the dried raw panels, they are coated with aqueous emulsion paints. Since the surface is highly porous and therefore a lot of color migrates into the surface, this process consumes color unnecessarily.
Furthermore, the surfactants previously used tend to adsorb atmospheric moisture. This can lead to softening of the binder used. This reduces the binding force and, due to its own weight, the panels attached to the frame can bend.
The object of the invention is to achieve that as much water as possible is removed from the mixture to be dried before the drying process and that no hydrophilic surfactant (eg alkylphenyl ethoxylates) remains in the plate.
According to the invention, this is achieved by using the surfactant siloxanes listed below, which have betaine or quaternary groups.

The preparation of the abovementioned siloxanes which have betaine or quaternary groups is, inter alia, in DE-C-34 22 268, DE-C-37 19 086 and DE-C-38 37 811.
The use of these siloxanes has shown that they lead to extremely rapid drainage and thus the filter residues intended for the drying process contain significantly less water. This saves energy and achieves higher production speeds. The dried plates show clearly hydrophobic properties on their surface.
It has proven to be expedient to add silicone resins to the mineral and paper fiber slurry as water repellents. By using these known silicone resins in combination with the surfactant siloxanes used according to the invention, an even more uniform and better hydrophobization is achieved.
The process according to the invention is explained in more detail with reference to the following examples.
First of all, a mixture is produced in which no surfactant is added.
In 3 l of water, 120 g of rock wool, 10 g of starch, 30 g of clay and 0.4% by weight of a 50% hydrophobic emulsion, based on the above. Solid, added on the basis of a methyl silicone resin and mixed well.
To the standard mixture described above, 0.1% by weight of a surfactant of the prior art, namely a nonylphenyl ethoxylate with 6 ethylene oxide groups, is added.
- R=
- langkettiger Alkylrest, C12H25-
- R =
- long chain alkyl radical, C 12 H 25 -
The surfactant concentrations used refer to the solids content in the standard mixture.
In this example, the significantly improved hydrophobic properties of a mineral fiber ceiling tile which was treated with the siloxane surfactants used according to the invention are shown on the basis of the water absorption values.
The water absorption values clearly show that plates with hydrophobic properties can be produced by using the surfactants according to the invention.
In addition to a considerably faster drainage compared to the standard mixture and the sample with alkylarylsulfonate (nonylphenol ethoxylates with 6 ethylene oxide groups), the filter residues in which the siloxane surfactants according to the invention are used contain significantly less water. This means that in addition to lower energy costs, higher production speeds in the production of mineral and paper fiber boards can be achieved. The finished plates also show significantly improved hydrophobic properties.
