Definitions

  • This invention relates to a sealing structure for the lower edge of a helmet visor, combined with means for the internal ventilation of said visor, especially for integral helmets for motorcyclists and the like.
  • the helmets of present art for motorcyclists are provided in the front arched part with a wide front opening which allows the visibility to the users who wear them during the running; such opening is provided with a visor from transparent material, which can be raised and lowered until the complete closing of the opening is achieved.
  • chin protector the part of the helmet which wraps up the chin of the user (commonly called “chin protector”) is circumscribed by the lower side of said front opening and this side, which has an arched and substantially horizontal development, may be provided with a seal running along the whole length of said side, so as to form a stop and sealing means for the lower edge of the visor, in position of complete closing.
  • the structures according to the present art for the internal ventilation of the visor and the related seals between the visor and the peripheral edge of the skin protection are usually very complicated as they require almost always a front groove in the chin protector, the fitting in said groove of a shaped body provided with external holes and vertical channels to convey the ventilation air behind the visor, as well as a separate seal from plastic material or the like, suitably shaped and applied to the upper peripheral edge of the chin protector.
  • Object of this invention is to realize a sealing structure for the lower edge of the visor in closed position, providing for the internal ventilation of said visor, so designed and structurated as to obviate the drawbacks of the present systems for the ventilation and the seal in closed position of the visors of integral helmets and the like.
  • Another object of this invention is to realize a structure of the aforementioned type, so structurated as to have reduced overall dimensions, to be easily and quickly mountable and also such as not to require expensive operations for fitting it in the cap in correspondence of the chin protector, with clear practical and economic advantages.
  • a further object of this invention is to realize a composite ventilation and sealing structure in the closed position of visors for integral helmets, which allows to convey the ventilation air directly behind the internal wall of the visor, starting from the zone nearest to the seal, with excellent advantages as concerns the uniformity and effectiveness of the internal ventilation of the visor.
  • the special shape of the component allows to suitably convey downwards the warm humid air exhaled by the user, furtherly reducing the misting over of the visor.
  • a sealing structure for the lower edge of a visor for integral helmets and the like which structure, according to this invention, is combined with means for the internal ventilation of said visor kept in closed position on a step obtained externally to the upper edge of the helmet chin protector, and is formed by one only body from elastically yielding material, substantially shaped as an arched lamina according to the bending radius of said step of the chin protector and being developed for the whole length of said step, said body having the form of an arched lamina being so shaped as to have the lower longitudinal edge of uniform thickness, suitable to form the lower seal for the visor in closed position and, in the zone corresponding to the front opening of the helmet, a tang arched towards the inside and provided with a plurality of openings or holes forming a grid located in touch with the upper edge of said chin protector, so as to allow the external air entering from openings frontally obtained in the chin protector and connected to channels obtained inside said chin protector, to
  • said lower edge of said body shaped as an arched lamina is formed by two flanges or lips arranged as an upside-down "V", so as to allow the external flange to form the seal between the visor and the surface of said peripheral step.
  • the holes of said air inlet grid are obtained in slanted position towards the visor, conveying in this way the ventilation air against said visor, starting substantially from the lower zone of the closed visor.
  • the sealing and internal ventilation structure of a visor for integral helmets is substantially formed, as is clearly shown in Fig. 1, by one only arched body, globally indicated by 1, realized from elastically yielding material, or anyhow from a scarcely rigid material, such as a thermoplastic material, synthetic or natural rubber, by means of the conventional technique of injection moulding or the like.
  • said structure 1 is so designed and structurated as to form a continuous seal for the lower edge of a visor for integral helmets in closed position, and also an effective means for the internal ventilation, i.e. behind said visor.
  • said structure has a substantially laminar length 2, arched according to the bending radius of the upper edge 3 of the part of the cap forming the chin protector 4 of an integral helmet 5, and a length substantially equal to the length of the lower edge of visor 7.
  • Said laminar length 2 is shaped as an upside-down "V" for the whole length, so as to have two flanges 2a and 2b, of which the one indicated by 2b remains in stable touch with the vertical wall 6a of step 6 obtained on the chin protector 4, while flange 2a forms a seal for the lower edge of visor 7, when it is in closed position, as shown in the section of Fig. 3 and as will be better clarified in the following.
  • a wide flange 8 is realized integrally with said upside-down "V" shaped length, said flange being arched towards the inside of the helmet front opening 9 and whose length is such as to cover most of the lower side of the front opening 9.
  • openings 10-10a etc. are obtained with a substantially vertical orientation, forming a grid for the outlet of the ventilation air coming from the usual channels 11 obtained in padding 13 of the chin protector 4 and connected to external air intakes 17, 17a provided with a conveyor 16 and manoeuvrable sliders 12 (Fig.2), sliding on guides 11.
  • the above described structure is also provided, on the internal face, with pegs 14 and tongues 15, suitable to form together stable anchoring means for the structure within the side wall 6a of step 6 of the chin protector, in such a way that the upside-down "V" seal rests on the horizontal side of the same step and the arched flange carrying grid 10-10a remains in touch with the upper horizontal edge 3 of padding 13 of the chin-protector 4.
  • the positioning of the grid-structure is so effected that the holes of the grid are in correspondence of channels 11 provided to convey the air behind the visor.
