Abstract

An extendable bracket (2) is attached to the underside of a ladder. Ballast is placed on the bracket and the bracket is adjusted for length as necessary. The bracket and ballast assist in securing the top of the ladder against its support and the bottom of the ladder on the ground. <IMAGE>

Description

This invention relates to a ladder securer.
Portable ladders are widely used apparatus for gaining access to items above normal reach. When inclined at the correct angle a ladder will normally be quite stable in use and may be ascended without difficulty.
However, in many situations, the angle of inclination permitted by surroundings may be too steep for safety and may create problems of access.
US-A-3954156 (Kennedy) which forms the basis for the 2-part form of claims relates to a device for imparting increased stability to a ladder by suspending a load from a flexible suspension member, such as a rope or cord, attached to the upper and lower ends of the ladder by means of supsension brackets.
An object of the present invention is to provide an improved ladder securer to assist in stabilization of a ladder in use.
According to the present invention there is provided a ladder securer comprising a rigid support bracket and a ballast weight supported on the bracket characterised by the bracket having upper means for attachment thereof to a ladder rung or stile and lower means for abutment against or attachment to a lower rung or stile of the ladder.
The supporting bracket may be integral to the ladder or detachable therefrom. Preferably, the length of the bracket is adjustable. The bracket may also be collapsible.
The ballast weight may comprise a container and a filling for the container. The container may be rigid or may be a sack or bag. Alternatively, the ballast weight may comprise one or more solid weights. The ballast weight may be detachable from the support bracket or may be integral with the bracket.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:-
  • Figure 1 shows, in perspective, a bracket and ballast weight attached to a ladder; and
  • Figure 2 shows the bracket and ballast weight viewed from the side.
  • Referring to the drawing the bracket 2 is first attached to the ladder 1, by hooking it over a rung, then the ballast weight 3 is placed on the bracket.
The action of each bracket and ballast weight serves to force the top of the ladder firmly against its support whilst forcing the foot of the ladder against the ground. This action make the ladder more secure and counteracts any outward force created by a user on the ladder.
The leverage force of the ballast weight may be adjusted by sliding the end part 4 telescopically in or out of the main body of the bracket, securing it in the desired position with a locking pin.

    Claims (8)

    1. A ladder securer comprising a rigid support bracket (2) and a ballast weight (3) supported on the bracket characterized by the bracket (2) having upper means for attachment thereof to a ladder rung or stile and lower means for abutment against or attachment to a lower rung or stile of the ladder (1).
    2. A ladder securer as claimed in claim 1 characterized in that the supporting bracket (2) is integral to a ladder (1).
    3. A ladder securer as claimed in claim 1, characterized in that the length of the bracket (2) is adjustable.
    4. A ladder securer as claimed in claim 1, characterized in that the bracket (2) is collapsible.
    5. A ladder securer as claimed in claim 1, characterized in that the ballast weight (3) comprises a container and a filling for the container.
    6. A ladder securer as claimed in claim 5, characterized in that the container is a rigid container.
    7. A ladder securer as claimed in claim 5, characterized in that the container is a sack or bag.
