The electrochemical oxidation of 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol to 3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde is described by H. Ohmori et al. in Chem. Pharm. Bull. 33 (1985) 4007. The reaction is carried out in a mixture of methanol and diethyl ether in the presence of stoichiometric amounts of sodium methoxide and another auxiliary electrolyte at constant potential. The yield of 68%, however, leaves something to be desired for an economical technical implementation of the process.
The invention was based, the aldehydes I from the task To make phenols II selectively accessible in higher yields.
