- the invention relates to a plate made of a plastic foam for containing meat, fish or the like foodstuffs, whereby the plate is provided with a bottom and with side walls joining the bottom at its circumference and extending upwards therefrom, whilst the plate is at its bottom side covered with a fluid impermeable foil attached to the plate, said foil being integral with foil parts sealing the side walls against the permeation of fluid.
- Plates have been proposed with which this can be realized, but such plates are entirely made of fluid impermeable plastics, which leads to the use of comparatively heavy and expensive plates.
- the foil extends over the upper edges of the plate.
- a further foil sealing the plate at its upper part and comprising at least one gastight layer may be bonded to the parts of the foil extending over the upper edges of the plate, which foil comprises at least one gastight layer.
- Recesses extending into the bottom of the plate are thereby efficiently provided in said bottom. Any moisture from the foodstuffs may be received in said recesses. Thus it is prevented that during the processing of the plates filled with foodstuffs before the foil sealing the plate at its upper side is provided, the foil parts extending above the upper edges of the plate come into contact with moisture from the foodstuffs, which would have an adverse effect on the intended sealing of the plate.

- a large number of recesses or openings 3 are provided in a regular pattern in the bottom 1 of the plate, whereby the cross-section of said recesses or openings preferably increases gradually in a direction away from the upper side of the bottom.
- Each recess 3 opens into a chamber 4 at some distance from the upper surface of the bottom 1, whereby the cross-section of the upper end of said chamber 4 is larger than that of the bottom end of the recess 3.
- the cross-section of the chamber 4 increases gradually from its upper end in a direction away from the upper side of the bottom 1, as will be apparent from Figure 3.
- Recesses or openings and chambers of this type are effective in discharging fluid from the bottom of the plate and for containing said fluid out of sight, in a similar manner as for example described in EU-A-0,600,535.
- the chambers 4 are covered by means of a fluid impermeable foil 5 comprising at least one gastight layer, which is bonded to the plate and extends over the bottom 1 of the plate.
- edges 6 of the fluid impermeable foil 5 extend along the entire height of the outer sides of the side walls, which side edges are provided with extensions 8 being integral therewith and extending over the upper edge of the plate, whereby further foil parts 9 join said extensions 8, said further foil parts extending from the upper edge of the plate over part of the inner sides of the upright walls 2.
- a further foil may be placed over the foil parts 8 extending over the upper edges of the plate and be bonded to said foil parts 8, for example by welding.
- the polystyrene plate is completely surrounded by a fluid impermeable foil, whereby the interior of the plate is sealed gastight, so that it is made possible to pack foodstuffs gastight, using the polystyrene foam plate according to the invention, whereby it is possible to create a desired atmosphere in the interior of the plate.
- the foil parts 6, which inter alia extend over the joints between the side walls 2 and the bottom 1, thereby reinforce the plate in an effective manner. Since the sealing of the foil on the plate is furthermore to a considerable extent effected by the bonding of the edges of the foil to the upright side walls 2 of the plate, it will suffice, as is apparent in particular from Figure 3, to use comparatively narrow outer edges 7 for the bottom 1 of the plate.
- edges of the foil extend upwards from the circumference of the plate into the interior of the side walls, whilst the ends 8 projecting above the side walls are folded over the upper edges of the side walls.
- a plate of this type may be made by first forming the bottom with the inner parts of the side walls joining said bottom in a mould, and then placing a foil over the product thus formed, after which the outer parts of the upright side walls are formed.
- Any foil parts projecting beyond the upper edges of the plate may be cut off along the edge of the plate or be folded along the outer sides of the plate.
- the foil of a fluid impermeable material is joined to the plastic foam of the plate in an effective manner, whilst a further foil sealing the plate at its upper side may be bonded or welded to the parts 8 of the foil extending over the upper edges of the side walls.
- Figure 5 shows a further variant of the plate according to the invention.
- the upwardly extending parts 6 of the foil extend through the bottom 1 and along the inner sides of the upright side walls 2 in this embodiment, whilst the free ends 8 of the upwardly extending parts 6 of the foil are in turn folded over the upper edges of the plate, so that a further foil may be bonded or welded thereto, if desired, so as to obtain a gastight space in the interior of the plate.
- Figure 6 shows yet another variant of the plate according to the invention.
- the difference with the preceding embodiments is that the recesses 3 only extend along part of the height of the bottom 1 and are closed near their bottom ends.
