Abstract

The card and its read/write unit are both distinguished by a special electronic key which is imprinted on the card by its manufacturer and can be recognised by an electronic decryption device in the user's read/write unit. The latter has an electrically programmable read-only memory which is programmed by its manufacturer to perform the decryption. A card programmed with a password is compatible with a read/write unit having the corresp. software, but will be rejected by any other unit.

Description

The invention relates to a unit consisting of an optical card and an associated read / write device.

Optical data carriers in the form of so-called optical cards have the great advantage that they can hold very large amounts of data, which are very insensitive to external influences due to the optical scanning method. The optical card has the further advantage that it is very handy due to its size. In the present case, the optical card is used in particular to store X-ray images and accompanying data.

Such optical cards can be processed by means of an appropriate read / write device, i.e. Corresponding data, for example the X-ray images already mentioned, can be stored on the optical cards by means of this device. Furthermore, if necessary, the corresponding data can be called up by the corresponding reading device and made visible on a screen, for example.

One problem is that all conventional optical cards can be processed with conventional read / write devices. Conversely, this applies equally. However, this proves to be disadvantageous if very specific optical cards are to be processed only with very specific read / write devices.

Proceeding from this, the invention is therefore based on the object of creating an improved unit comprising an optical card and an associated read / write device.

As a technical solution , the invention proposes that the optical card and the read / write device have a special electronic key which corresponds to one another in such a way that only the optical card marked in this way is by means of the associated read / write device and vice versa are compatible editable.

This creates electronic protection for optical cards, which protects against misuse by unauthorized persons. The basic idea is that this electronic protection prevents the read / write devices for optical cards from a very specific manufacturer from being used by commercially available optical cards. The invention therefore provides to mark both the optical cards and the read / write devices in such a way that only the optical cards marked in this way can be processed by the associated read / write devices. If, for example, an optical card is entered into the read / write device that does not have this special electronic marking, this optical card is output again as faulty. Conversely, an optical card specially marked in this way cannot be processed by "normal" read / write devices. This protection therefore ensures that only manufacturer-specific optical cards can be processed with manufacturer-specific read / write devices.

A further development of the unit according to the invention proposes that the optical card has been marked with the electronic key by the manufacturer and that the read / write device of the consumer has a device for electronically decrypting the optical card marked in this way. This provides a technically simple way to prevent the abuse described. For this purpose, the manufacturer has already provided the optical cards with the manufacturer-specific electronic key. The optical cards marked in this way are then issued to the end user. This is then in the possession of a special read / write device which is modified accordingly, so that only the read / write device modified in this way can decrypt the optical cards marked in this way and processing is possible.

A further development suggests that the optical card is formatted with a special electronic key. This means that the optical cards are given an electronic key by the formatting, which means that they only fit the read / write devices that have the same key. The formatting of the optical cards represents is a technically simple way to mark the optical cards.

A further development suggests that the read / write device has an EPROM. This represents a simple technical possibility to modify the hardware of the read / write devices by installing a special "program chip" so that they can process the specially marked, in particular specially formatted, optical cards. The Eprom has been programmed by the manufacturer in such a way that the appropriate decryption is possible.

Finally, it is proposed in a further development that a password is additionally assigned by software to the optical card from the manufacturer. In principle, it would of course still be possible for unauthorized persons to use a corresponding marking program, in particular a formatting program modified in the manner according to the invention, in order to format optical cards from other manufacturers, so that the optical cards marked in this way can be used to read them with the manufacturer's modified card / Use a writing device. In order to prevent this, according to the present development, each optical card is additionally provided with its own password by the manufacturer, in particular when formatting the corresponding software. The optical cards are thus given a manufacturer-specific, software-based password protection, in addition to the existing marking. Only this password protection characterizes the optical cards issued in this way as coming from a specific manufacturer. The protection for optical cards according to the invention can thus not be circumvented by commercially available formatting programs, provided that someone intends to use such a formatting program for special formatting of the optical cards. This also requires a very specific password. Conversely, password protection of the optical cards means securing the data through unauthorized access and misuse by unauthorized persons in the sense of data protection of the information written on the optical card. This protection system thus guarantees data protection of the data written on the optical card, i.e. this data cannot be viewed by unauthorized read / write devices, since accessing the data using a very specific read / write device requires knowledge of the programmed password.

In the drawing, the principle of the unit of optical card and associated read / write device according to the invention is shown.

These two "normal components" are compatible with each other. This contrasts with the modified read / write device together with the associated modified optical card, which are also compatible with one another in this modified form. However, the normal system is incompatible with the modification system. Read / write devices that were originally identical in terms of hardware and software are divided into two different generations by the installation of a special "program chip" and by the pre-programming of the optical cards, which are only compatible with one another. After the special formatting of the optical cards, they are no longer interchangeable, ie writable and readable, under these two different systems.

Fig. 2 shows the extended form with the password. The optical cards modified in this way with the programmed password are only compatible with a read / write device which, on the one hand, has been modified in order to decrypt the electronic marking and, moreover, has the corresponding password software. Optical cards, which are modified in the sense of electronic encryption but do not have a password, are incompatible with the read / write devices equipped with a password.
