Description
- The present invention relates to a swivel hook used for rucksacks, knapsacks, baggages, belts etc., and particularly to a swivel hook comprised of a hook body, a connecting ring pivotally mounted on one end of the hook body and a latch member mounted on the hook body and normally biased by a spring to engage the tip of the hook body for retaining another separate ring or something.
- One typical swivel hook of the conventional type is disclosed as in Japanese Utility Model Publication No. 46-28823. The conventional swivel hook is comprised of a hook body and a connecting ring pivotally mounted on the hook body. The hook body and the connecting ring are made separately and later put together. The hook body is made of a metal plate and has a hook formed on the lower end and a small hook arrangement formed on the upper end. The upper hook arrangement is bifurcated to provide an elongated notch. A resilient plate is clamped to the end of the upper hook and is normally biased by its own resiliency to tend to close the hook. The connecting ring has a connecting axle provided centrally on one side thereof. The connecting axle has an enlarged spherical end formed on its lower end. The connecting axle is loosely fitted in the notch so that the connecting ring is able to rotate, mounted on the bifurcated upper hook arrangement of the hook body.
- A similar hook in shown in EP-A-0170811 in which the latch member is integral with the hook body.
- Another conventional type of swivel hook is disclosed as in Japanese Utility Model Laid-open Publication Nos. 2-80212 and 4-93508. Likewise, this conventional swivel hook comprises a hook body and a connecting ring pivotally mounted on the hook body. Instead of having a connecting axle, the connecting ring has a through hole centrally positioned on one side thereof. The hook body has a connecting axle integrally formed on the upper end thereof, and the connecting axle which, in turn, has an enlarged head on its upper end. The through hole is slightly greater in diameter than the enlarged head of the connecting axle, so that the latter can be fitted through the former. After the enlarged head of the connecting axle is fitted through the through hole of the connecting ring, that part of the connecting ring which surrounds the through hole is squeezed, thereby retaining the enlarged head of the connecting axle in the through hole, so that the hook body can be pivotally mounted on the connecting ring around the connecting axle.
- These conventional swivel hooks have drawbacks.
- In the case of the first conventional swivel hook, to provide the hook body, it is necessary to fold a marginal part of the resilient latch member onto the end of the bifurcated upper hook arrangement, which requires more steps for making the swivel hook. Furthermore, the engaging force between the enlarged head of the connecting axle and the bifurcated upper hook arrangement of the hook body is weak since the hook body is made of a thin metal plate. Furthermore, since the connecting axle is fitted in the elongated notch, the connecting ring is inclined to rattle along the elongated notch. Still furthermore, the enlarged head is partly exposed through the notch, thus making the appearance of the swivel hook, as a whole less attractive.
- In the case of the second conventional swivel hook, the connecting ring must be squeezed around the through hole in order to connect the hook body to the connecting ring. This increases production steps of the swivel hook. Since the squeezing operation is effected after the hook body and the connecting ring are painted or plated, the operation is prone to destroy the painted or plated surface of the connecting ring. Furthermore, in the case of the swivel hook disclosed in Japanese Utility Model Laid-open Publication No.. 2-80212, the enlarged head of the connecting axle projects into a belt-inserting hole defined by the connecting ring. This enlarged head is inclined to interfere with the belt-inserting operation. In the case of the swivel hook disclosed in Japanese Utility Model Laid-open Publication No. 4-93508, that one side of the connecting ring into which the enlarged head is inserted must be formed thicker, which makes the swivel hook as a whole less attractive in appearance.
- Taking into account the foregoing difficulties, it is therefore the object of the present invention to provide a swivel hook wherein a connecting ring is firmly and retentively connected to a hook body, and which is easier to manufacture and is attractive in appearance.
- According to the present invention, there is provided a swivel hook comprising; a hook body including a housing body having a housing chamber which has a opening facing toward a side thereof and a pair of overhangs formed on opposing inner surfaces of the housing chamber, a hook proper provided on the housing body, a latch member mounted on the housing body and being movable into or out of engagement with the hook proper and biasing means mounted on the housing body for normally biasing the latch member in the direction of coming into engagement with the hook proper; an annular link having a connecting axle provided on one side thereof, the connecting axle having an enlarged head formed on its distal end, the connecting axle rotatably mounted in the housing chamber by insertion through the opening with the enlarged head engaging the overhangs; and a plug member closing the opening, thus confining the enlarged head in the housing chamber so that the connecting ring is pivotally and retentively mounted on the hook body.
- Many other advantages and features of the present invention will become apparent to those versed in the art upon making reference to the detailed description and the accompanying sheets of drawings in which preferred structural embodiments incorporating the principles of the present invention are shown by way of illustrative example.
- FIG. 1 is an exploded perspective view of a swivel hook according to the first embodiment of the present invention.

- Some embodiments of the present invention will be described closely in conjunction with the drawings appended hereto.
- FIGS. 1 and 4 show a swivel hook according to the first embodiment of the present invention. As shown in the drawings, the swivel hook is broadly comprised of a substantially
oval hook body 10 and an annular connectingring 12, both made of metal, the connectingring 12 being pivotally mounted on thehook body 10. Thehook body 10 is comprised of ahousing body 10a, a substantially J-shaped hook proper 14 integrally formed with and extending downward from the lower end of thehousing body 10a to define agap 15 with thehousing body 10a, alatch member 16 rotatably mounted on thehousing body 10a so as to open and close thegap 15, and a biasing means such as aspiral spring 18 mounted on thehousing body 10a for normally biasing thelatch member 16 in the direction to close thegap 15. The J-shaped hook proper 14 has afitting projection 14a provided on the distal end of the inner side. - The annular connecting
ring 12 has a connectingaxle 20 provided centrally on one side thereof so as to project outwardly. The connectingaxle 20 has an enlargedhead 22 formed on its distal end. Thehead 22 is greater in diameter than the connectingaxle 20. - The
housing body 10a has ahousing chamber 24 formed therein so as to extend throughout the length of thehousing body 10a. Thehousing chamber 24 has an opening 24' facing toward the front of thehousing body 10a. Thehousing body 10 has a pair ofgrooves housing chamber 24 and disposed in confronting relation to each other. Formation of the confrontinggrooves overhangs grooves overhangs - The
latch member 17 is of substantially inverted L-shape and comprises alongitudinal latch bar 16 and alateral bar 32a extending substantially normal to thelatch bar 16. Thelatch bar 16 has afitting groove 16a on the distal end on the outside, with which thefitting projection 14a of the hook proper 14 is adapted for fitting engagement. Thelateral bar 32a is recessed in two depths to provide aside wall 32b, aconcave seat 32c contiguous to theside wall 32b and amarginal shelf 32d contiguous to theconcave seat 32c. Theside wall 32a has ashaft 30 mounted on opposite sides and disposed perpendicularly thereto. Thespiral spring 18 is set in theconcave seat 32c around theshaft 30 with oneend 18b of thespring 18 resting against themarginal shelf 32d. When thelatch member 17 is placed onto thehook body 10a, theshaft 30 is adapted so that it is able to rotate on theopposed bearing concaves - The
hook body 10 also includes aplug member 40 adapted to be plugged into the opening 24' of thehousing chamber 24 after thelateral bar 16b of thelatch member 16 and the enlargedhead 22 of the connectingring 12 are engaged in thehousing chamber 24, so that the connectingring 12 is rotatably retained on thehook body 10. Theplug member 40 is made of metal and is comprised of acover wall 40a having such a profile to be complementary with the contour of the opening 24', ahorizontal body 42 formed integrally with and extending normal to thecover wall 40a and a locking portion orlocking wall 44 mounted vertically on the end thereof and directed upward for locking engagement with the confrontinglocking prongs plug member 40 is plugged into thegrooves horizontal body 42 of theplug member 40 is adapted to pivotally support the enlargedhead 22 of the connectingaxle 20. Furthermore, theend 18b of thespiral spring 18 abuts the bottom of thehorizontal body 42 of theplug member 40, thus biasing thehorizontal body 42 against theenlarged head 22 of the connectingring 12 by resiliency of thespiral spring 18. - For assembling this swivel hook, as shown in FIG. 4, first off, the
spring 18 is fitted over theshaft 30 of thelatch member 16 with oneend 18a of thespring 18 resting on themarginal shelf 32d of thelatch member 16. Thelateral bar 32a of thelatch member 16 with thespring 18 thus resting thereon is inserted into thehousing chamber 24 through the opening 24'. Thelatch member 16 is set in thehousing chamber 24 with theshaft 30 able to rotate on the bearing concaves 31, 31. Then, theenlarged head 22 is inserted into the confrontinggrooves enlarged head 22 engaged with theoverhangs spiral spring 18 biases thelatch member 17 to normally rotate thelatch member 17 clockwise, as viewed in FIG. 4, to thus bring the distal end of thelatch bar 16 into abutting engagement with the distal end of the hook proper 14 withfitting groove 16a of the former fitted with thefitting projection 14a of the latter. Subsequently, theplug member 40 is inserted into the confrontinggrooves plug member 40 advances with theother end 18b of thespring 18 biasing upward thehorizontal body 42 of theplug member 40, which, in turn, biases upward theenlarged head 22 of the connectingring 12 which is positioned over thehorizontal body 42 of theplug member 40. As soon as theterminal locking wall 44 of theplug member 40 passes beyond the locking prongs 46, 46, the terminal locking wall of theplug member 40 is brought into locking engagement with the locking prongs 46, 46 under the resiliency of thespiral spring 18. With theplug member 40 thus plugged and locked in thegrooves enlarged head 22 is entrapped into thegrooves ring 12 is rotatably mounted on thehook body 10. The swivel hook has been now assembled. - Even when severe stresses or vibrations are exerted on the connecting
ring 12 which, in the case of conventional swivel hooks, would tend to move theenlarged head 22 out of thegrooves 26 through the opening 26', in this case, the connectingring 12 will never released from thehook body 10 since thespiral spring 18 ensuredly biases theterminal locking wall 44 of theplug member 40 into locking engagement with the locking prongs 46, 46 of thehook body 10. - Turning now to the operation of the thus assembled swivel hook, as shown in FIG. 2, normally the
latch bar 16 of the inverted L-shapedlatch member 17 is biased by thespiral spring 18 into engagement with the distal end of the J-shaped hook proper 14 with thefitting groove 16a fitting with thefitting projection 14a. Therefore, for connecting a separate ring (not shown) to the hook proper 14, thelatch bar 16 is pressed inward to rotate on counterclockwise, as viewed in FIG. 3, theshaft 30 against the bias of thespiral spring 18 to thus open thegap 15. Then, the separate ring is inserted into the hook proper 14 through thegap 15. Releasing thelatch bar 16 causes thelatch bar 16 to be restored to its original position by the resiliency of thespiral spring 18, that is, thelatch bar 16 comes into abutting engagement with the distal end of the hook proper 14 with thefitting groove 16a fitting with theprojection 14a. Since theshaft 30 is resiliently retained in the bearing concaves 31, 31 under the bias of thespiral spring 18, thelateral bar 32a of thelatch member 17 is well prevented from coming off thegrooves - With the construction set forth above, assembling the connecting
ring 12 and thehook body 10 can be done merely by putting thelatch member 17 and theplug member 40 in situ in thehook body 10, which dispenses with the squeezing and other attendant operations. This helps to decrease the number of steps for producing the swivel hook. Furthermore, the connecting force between thehook body 10 and the connectingring 12 has become much greater. Still furthermore, the bearing concaves 37 formed in thehousing chamber 24 and theshafts 30 of the L-shapedlatch member 17 are completely concealed from the external view, which makes the appearance of the swivel hook as a whole more attractive. Yet furthermore, since thehook body 10, the connectingring 12, thelatch member 17 and plugmember 40 are all made of metal, the swivel hook has become better in mechanical strength and aesthetic value. Still furthermore, since theplug member 40 is biased against theenlarged head 22 of the connectingring 12 by thespiral spring 18, theplug member 40 is securely retained in thehousing chamber 24 of thehook body 10 thus preventing accidental rattling. - Turning now to a swivel hook according to the second embodiment of the present invention in conjunction with the drawings FIGS. 5 through 7 wherein the same numbers are assigned to the same parts as those in the preceding embodiment.
- According to the second embodiment, the
plug member 50 is made of plastics and has a pair ofresilient arms arms overhangs indentations plug member 50 is inserted into thegrooves opposed arms arms arms respective indentations arms respective indentations plug member 50 is thus locked to thehook body 10 to thus prevent the connectingaxle 20 of thering 12 from coming out of thechamber 24 of thehook body 10. - Instead of the bearing concaves 31, 31 in the preceding embodiment, a
bridge portion 57 is mounted in thehousing chamber 24 between the inner walls of the housing body 10' and disposed adjacent to the J-shapedhook portion 14. The inverted L-shapedlatch member 17 has anotch 58 formed in the inner corner of thelatch bar 16 and thelateral bar 32. The L-shapedlatch member 17 has itsnotch 58 bear on thebridge portion 57 of thehousing body 10a so that thelatch member 17 can turn on thebridge portion 57 for bringing thelatch bar 16 into and out of engagement with the J-shapedhook portion 14. - For assembling the swivel hook according to the second embodiment, as shown in FIG. 7, first, the
spring 18 is fitted over theshaft 30 of thelatch member 16 with oneend 18a of thespring 18 resting on themarginal shelf 32d. Thelateral bar 32a of thelatch member 17, with thespring 18 thus resting thereon, is inserted into thehousing chamber 24 through the opening 24'. Thelatch member 17 is set in thehousing chamber 24 with thenotch 58 rotating on the bearingbridge 57. Then, theenlarged head 22 is inserted into the confrontinggrooves enlarged head 22 engaged with theoverhangs spiral spring 18 normally biases thelatch member 17 so as to rotate thelatch member 17 clockwise, as viewed in FIG. 4, to thus bring the distal end of thelatch bar 16 into abutting engagement with the distal end of the hook proper 14, with thefitting groove 16a of the former fitted into thefitting projection 14a of the latter. Subsequently, theplug member 50 is inserted into the confrontinggrooves opposed arms arms arms respective indentations arms respective indentations arms plug member 50 are brought into abutting engagement with the periphery of the connectingaxle 20 to thus prevent the connectingaxle 20 of the connectingring 12 from coming out of thehousing chamber 24 of thehook body 10. - Turning now to the operation of the thus assembled swivel hook. To connect a separate ring (not shown) to the hook proper 14, the
latch bar 16 is pressed inward to rotate clockwise, as viewed in FIG. 5, on thebridge 57 against the bias of thespiral spring 18 to thus open thegap 15. Then, the separate ring is inserted into the hook proper 14 through thegap 15. Releasing thelatch bar 16 causes thelatch member 17 to be restore to its original position by the resiliency of thespiral spring 18, that is, thelatch bar 16 comes into abutting engagement with the distal end of the hook proper 14 with thefitting groove 16a fitting with thefitting projection 14a. Since theshaft 30 is retained in the bearing concaves 31, 31 under the bias of thespiral spring 18, thelateral bar 32a of thelatch member 17 is well prevented from coming off thegrooves - The description goes on to a swivel hook according to the third embodiment of the present invention. The same parts as described in the preceding embodiments will be marked with the same reference numbers for convenience's sake. Detailed description of the same parts will be omitted. According to the third embodiment, a longer
lateral bar 60 is integrally provided perpendicularly on thelatch bar 16. Thelateral bar 60 has an engaginglug 64 provided on the lower side and in the middle thereof. Thehousing body 10a has aslot 62 formed on the opposite side to the opening 24' of thehousing chamber 24. Thelatch member 17 is set on thehousing body 10a with the forward part of thelateral bar 60 projecting through theslot 62 and the engaginglug 64 abutting on thebridge 67. Furthermore, the horizontal part of theplug member 50 has a slit (not shown) formed therethrough. Theother end 18b of thespring 18 passes through the slit of theplug member 50 and comes into direct contact with theenlarged head 22 of the connectingring 12, which means that the biasing force of thespring 18 acts directly on theenlarged head 22 of the connectingring 12 to thus retain theenlarged head 22 to theoverhangs 28 more securely without rattling. - Description is now made as to a swivel hook according to the fourth embodiment of the present invention in conjunction with FIGS. 10 and 11. Likewise, the same numbers are assigned to the same parts as those in the preceding embodiments. A separate
arcuate hook 71 is rotatably mounted on the open side at the lower end of thehousing body 10a around apin 70. Thehook 71 has a lockingprojection 71a on the tip. Instead of the inverted L-shaped latch members according to the preceding embodiments, a substantiallyrectilinear latch member 72 is employed. Therectilinear latch member 72 includes an engagingprotuberance 72a formed on the lower side at one end, a grippingknob 75 formed on the other end and an upper extension 72' formed on the upper side adjacent to the other end. Ashaft 30 is mounted on theupper extension 72b for mounting thespiral spring 18 therearound. Furthermore, therectilinear latch member 72 has anindentation 74 formed in the lower side in the middle. The upper side of therectilinear latch member 72 constitutes aseat 32 on which oneend 18a of thespring 18 rests. Thehousing body 10a has aridge 73 mounted on the bottom. As shown in FIG. 11, therectilinear latch member 72 is mounted on thehousing body 10a with theindentation 74 bearing on theridge 73. Thespiral spring 18 mounted on theshaft 30 has its oneend 18a acting theseat 32 of therectilinear latch member 72 and theother end 18b acting on the bottom of theplug member 50. - The construction of the swivel hook according to the invention is not limited to the embodiments described herein before. For example, the housing chamber and the plug member may be of any suitable shape as long as they accomplish the required function. Furthermore, means of creating the bias need not necessarily be a separate spring, but may be made as a resilient plate formed integrally to the latch member.
- With the construction of the swivel hook set forth hereinabove, all that must be done to complete the swivel hook is just to put together the constituent parts, dispensing with any processing steps such as the squeezing operation. This helps to decrease the number of steps in producing the swivel hook. Furthermore, the connecting force between the hook body and the connection ring becomes stronger. Furthermore, the opening to the housing chamber of the hook body is well concealed by various parts, thus rendering the appearance of the swivel hook as a whole attractive. Furthermore, since the plug member may be biased by the biasing means against the housing body, the plug member is firmly set to the housing body, so that the connecting ring can be retentively mounted on the hook body for a prolonged period of time.
Claims (2)
- A swivel hook comprising; a hook body (10) including a housing body (10a) having a housing chamber (24) which has a opening (24') facing toward a side thereof and a pair of overhangs (28, 28) formed on opposing inner surfaces of the housing chamber (24), a hook proper (14) provided on the housing body (10a), a latch member (17) mounted on the housing body (10a) and being movable into or out of engagement with the hook proper (14) and biasing means (18) mounted on the housing body (10a) for normally biasing the latch member (17) in the direction of coming into engagement with the hook proper (14); and an annular link (12) having a connecting axle (20) provided on one side thereof, the connecting axle (20) having an enlarged head (22) formed on its distal end, the connecting axle (20) rotatably mounted in the housing chamber (24) by insertion through the opening (24') with the enlarged head (22) engaging the overhangs (28, 28); and a plug member (40) closing the opening (24'), thus confining the enlarged head (22) in the housing chamber (24) so that the connecting ring (12) is pivotally and retentively mounted on the hook body (10).
- A swivel hook according to claim 1, the plug member (40) having a locking portion (44, 54') formed thereon, the housing body (10a) having a locking part (46, 56) formed in the housing chamber (24), a part of the plug member (40) underlying the enlarged head (22) of the connecting ring (12), the biasing means (18) acting between the latch member (16) and the plug member (40) so that the biasing means (18) biases the plug member (40) so as to bring the locking portion (44, 54') of the plug member (40) into engagement with the locking part (46, 56) of the housing chamber (24), and biases the enlarged head (22) against the overhangs (28, 28).
