Abstract

In the device and corresponding process for the lifelike, three-dimensional representation of speaking people, the face of a doll (2) is used as a projection screen. By means of a sound and image projection device (26), a film taken of the person concerned is projected on parts of the face of the doll (20) from inside and/or outside. At the same time an audio signal recorded by the same person is emitted in synchronism therewith.

Description

The invention relates to a device for the realistic representation of speaking people according to the preamble of claim 1.

Such devices are known from US-A-3,053,144, US-A-1,653,180 and US-A-3,973,840. With these previously known devices, installation on site is not possible without special knowledge.

This is where the invention begins. It has set itself the task of providing life-like representations of people, preferably known, still living personalities. The devices and methods used should be cheaper to build and assemble than animated dolls from amusement parks and should give the most deceptive impression possible for an unbiased observer. This should spontaneously have the impression that it is not an image of the person, but of the person himself. The invention thus aims at a device for the representation of a person that is as deceptively as possible similar to reality.

This object is achieved by a device with the features of patent claim 1.

According to the invention, a life-size doll that is as identical as possible to the person to be represented is thus created, for example of the quality of a mannequin. This is also dressed in the way the person to be depicted is usually dressed. The doll is placed at a preferred location, for example in the entrance of a sales area, in an exhibition, in a shop window or the like, and is illuminated so well that it draws the eye of the beholder. The projection device for light and sound is hidden as far as possible, not visible to the eye of the beholder. It is located in the foot of the doll or it is arranged below it. Even the beam of light, that is used for the projection from the outside onto the face of the puppet is guided over the mirror in such a way that it is as obvious as possible - at least initially - for an impartial observer.

The dolls according to the invention do not require any mechanically moving parts. A film of the moving face is projected onto the resting face of the doll. In other words, the face of the doll forms the projection screen for the film that was recorded by the person while speaking. In the present application, speaking is also understood to mean singing, whistling or the like, that is to say every sound uttered by a person.

The face of the doll is naturally reproduced, so the doll preferably has eyes and a mouth, but in a modified version these can only be projected. The film is now projected in such a way that the light image fits exactly on the existing face and causes the changes in the face that occur when speaking. Wrinkles of movement are projected onto the face, the eyes move, the lips move in the rhythm of the language.

The invention is therefore particularly and preferably suitable for portraying well-known personalities who are still alive at least at the time the film was recorded. The doll is modeled according to the known personality as possible. Furthermore, the known personality records at least one film of the face during a speaking process. This recording is preferably made on the same axis as the later playback. At the same time, the sound is recorded. Doll and sound film can be made as often as you like. Installation is much cheaper than a mechanically moved doll.

Such dolls can be used in a wide variety of areas, for example designing exhibition stands, teaching aids, theater and film. In theater, for example, the make-up and appearance of an artist can be changed by transforming, ie changing, different make-ups.

Furthermore, the invention can be used favorably in the medical field as a teaching aid.

Another preferred area for the invention can be seen in the area of amusement parks, here for example in ghost trains.

Fantasy figures can also be used as a doll.

In preferred further training, not only partial areas of the face, for example mouth or eyes, but a full projection on the entire face is carried out. As a result, differences between image areas of the projection and projection-free zones of the face become less clear.

The device according to the invention is portable and variable. It can be quickly set up at the respective site, without special knowledge being required. In the sense of a modular system, it can be built up from individual components, for example the optical components, the doll component, etc. It is advantageous to make the head of the dolls interchangeable so that different people can be represented by placing different heads on a trunk with limbs.

A motor drive of the limbs of the doll or of the body is initially not provided, but in an advantageous further development the body parts can be motor-driven in order to improve the deception effect in this way.

The projection of the light signal from the outside onto the face The doll is made with a depth of field that is sufficient to sharply image all areas of the face on the doll's face, which acts as a projection screen.

Distortion can occur during projection, for example due to the deflection mirror. These can be compensated for by the fact that the camera location (when recording) largely corresponds to the projection location during playback or the location of the last deflecting mirror. In another embodiment, however, predistortions, for example electronic predistortions, can also be introduced specifically in the film, by means of which the curvature of the projection surface is taken into account. Finally, optical and mechanical distortions are also possible through the use of special lenses.

When the light is projected onto the face of the doll from the outside, the face of the doll is either opaque or at least partially transparent, preferably milky transparent. The light beam used for the projection comes at least partially from the mirror in the same direction from which a viewer usually approaches the puppet at the first encounter. However, the viewer does not immediately see the projection device which is hidden in the foot or below the doll. For this purpose, the doll preferably holds the mirror in his hand over which the projection is directed onto the face, or a corresponding mirror is provided at some hidden location.

It has proven to be particularly advantageous to provide the projection surface of the face with special effect bodies. These include actively glowing pigments, for example fluorescent dyes, which emit visible light when they are appropriately projected. Furthermore, dyes that can be changed by temperature, etc. It has also proven to be very advantageous to provide the surface of the projection areas, of the face, with a polarizing projection surface. Although this reflects the polarized projector light, disturbing extraneous light is largely retained.

Dolls that do not represent all of the features of the invention are described below. The description is given with reference to the drawing and is to be understood as non-restrictive. The drawing shows:
Fig. 1
a partial side view of a known doll, partially designed as a sectional view, with a projection device arranged inside and features, particularly embodiments of the invention
Fig. 2
a side view corresponding to FIG. 1 of a also known doll with an externally arranged projection device.

Of a complete, three-dimensional doll 20 that is depicted in real life, only the upper part of the torso 22 and the head 24 are shown in FIG. 1. The doll is made according to the original dimensions on a scale of 1: 1 by a generally known personality, for example from the entertainment or sports sector. Head 24 and body 22 are hollow on the inside. A projection device 26 for sound and image is arranged in the fuselage 22. Its sound output is connected to a loudspeaker 28 which, in the illustration shown here, is located in the chest area and radiates to the front. It can also be arranged in the head 24. The output light of the projection device 26 falls on a mirror which is located in the area of the back of the head and is arranged such that the output light of the projection device 26 falls from the inside onto the thin-walled face area of the head 24. The mapping also takes place there. The face area of the head 24 is made of milky, transparent plastic. The eyes are painted transparently on the outside, as is the mouth area and other details of the face. The depiction of a film recorded by the person portrayed is now carried out in such a way that the projected facial areas, in particular eyes, cheeks and mouth, completely match the corresponding facial areas of the doll 20 and the optical projection creates the impression that the face of the puppet is moving Doll 20, so as if the head could speak.

The doll itself is made so that the face is in a normal position while speaking. The lips are slightly open, as are the eyes, the pupils are in a normal position. Deflections from this normal position in the area of the lips, the formation of wrinkles in the area of the cheeks and the eyes are now brought about by optical projection. In addition, there is the synchronous audio signal which is emitted via the loudspeaker 28. It is preferably spoken by the person himself, but can also come from a voice actor.

The projection device 26 is implemented in video technology, a video tape (not shown) is converted into an optical image and this is projected onto the inner surface of the thin-walled face of the head by means of an illumination source. The head 24 is not permeable in its other areas, in order to avoid that stray light causes undesired light effects. For example, the area of the nose can also be made less transparent, preferably not transparent, in order to avoid undesirable light effects here. Such non-transparent facial areas merge into the transparent facial areas so that no light jumps occur. The output beam of the projection device 26 is shown. The doll 20 is also illuminated from the outside. The external illumination of the face takes place in such a way that the well-known, internal image does not act as a light source.

Die Außenfläche des Gesichts ist entsprechend als Projektionsschirm ausgeführt, hat also für sichtbares Licht ein ausreichendes Reflexionsvermögen.2 shows a projection from the outside onto the face of a doll 20. Here, essentially the same processes take place as those described for the first doll. In this case, however, the optical projection is carried out by the projection device 26 onto the outer surface of the face, again only partial areas being used. The outer surface of the face is designed as a projection screen, so it has sufficient reflectivity for visible light.

Bes the puppet of FIG. 2, the projection takes place obliquely from below. In order to avoid deviations due to distortion, a distorting optical system can be arranged in the light path of the projection, preferably at the output of the projection device 26, which compensates for the distortions caused by the recording and the projection.

The two known projection methods according to FIGS. 1 and 2 can also be combined. The projection device 26 can be connected to a computer that receives input commands from a microphone that is connected to a corresponding electronic card. In this way, communication with the doll is possible to a limited extent.

In a further development, with both types of projection (inside and / or outside) pigments can be arranged in the projected areas of the face, which convert UV light into colored, visible light, such pigments with white light radiation are known, for example, as so-called whiteners. The optical excitation is then carried out by UV light, which has the advantage of not being visible to the human eye. The UV light stimulates the pigments to radiate in the selected color, for example red for lips, at the locations that are exposed in each case.

The doll can be larger and / or smaller than the original, but a 1: 1 ratio is desirable.

B. Videoband, photographischer Film.Film is understood to mean every possible record carrier for optical information, e.g. B. videotape, photographic film.
