Definitions
- the present invention relates to a cover for covering a seat cushion of a motor vehicle, such as a seat cushion for the front seat or rear seat, headrest or armrest, as well as to a method to dress such a cushion.
- a seat cushion is usually made of a deformable material such as foam and is bounded by a top, sides and a bottom or bottom carried by a frame.
- This foam is covered by a cap, such as a cover, in a flexible material.
- This cap itself comprises a tray, a skirt and a flap extending mutually and which respectively cover, when the cap is in place on the cushion, the top thereof, at least a greater part of its sides and a corresponding strip from its underside.
- the cushion and its frame are sandwiched between the tray and the flap of the cap.
- An object of the invention is to provide a cap and a method for covering a cushion which dispenses with having over the entire contour defined by the free edges of the flap of such assembly profiles. This represents for mass production of seats both a saving in parts and a saving in considerable assembly time.
- the present invention provides a cover for covering a motor vehicle seat cushion, cushion defined by a top, sides and a bottom, said cover itself comprising a tray, a skirt and a flap extending mutually and intended to cover respectively the top of the cushion, at least the largest part of its sides and a corresponding strip of its underside, at least the greatest length of the free edge of the flap being pleated and stretched so as to keep the cover in place on the cushion, characterized in that the pleating of the edge of the flap is carried out by sewing this edge in its previously pleated state, on an inextensible bead extending without folds along said edge.
- the invention also provides a method for covering a seat cushion of a motor vehicle. -cushion defined by a top, sides and a bottom-by a cap comprising a tray, a skirt and a flap extending mutually and intended to respectively cover the top of the cushion, at least the major part of its sides and a band corresponding to its underside, at least the greatest length of the free edge of the flap being pleated and stretched so as to keep the cover partly on the cushion, characterized in that, prior to the installation of the cover on the cushion, the edge of the flap is sewn by pleating it on an inextensible cord which is extended without folds along said edge.
- the seat of the front seat of a motor vehicle mainly comprises a frame 2 and a foam cushion 3.
- the cushion 3 has a shape delimited by a top 3a, front sides, lateral and rear 3b and a bottom 3c by which the cushion 3 is carried on the frame 2.
- This cushion 3 is covered by a cap 4.
- This cap 4 mainly comprises a plate 5 which covers the top 3a and which defines with it the carrying surface on which the user is supported, as well as a skirt 6 attached by sewing on the edge of the plate 5 and which covers the front and lateral sides of the cushion 3.
- the cover 4 also has a base 8 independent of this skirt 6, extending the rear edge of the plate 5 and intended to cover the rear flank of the cushion 3.
- the skirt 6 is in place on the cushion, while the base 8 is shown in a position where it is not folded down on the underside 3c.
- the skirt 6 is shaped with, over its entire periphery, a flap 7 whose edge is pleated and stretched by means 12 described below which maintain this flap 7 pressed against the bottom 3c and the frame 2.
- this frame conventionally comprises a metal frame 9 between the sides of which extends at least one spacer 10, and zigzag springs 11 mounted between this spacer 10 and the frame 9.
- Each of the two ends of the skirt 6 is extended by a rear wing 17 carrying the female part 17a of a press button.
- This wing is folded laterally on the rear flank of the cushion 1 and thus ensures the complement of the coverings provided by the skirt 6 and the base 8.
- the female part 17a cooperates with a complementary male part carried by the frame 2.
- the pleating means 12 mainly comprise a cord 13 which is a braid of inextensible material extending along the edge of the flap 7 and on which this edge is sewn with pleating by two seam lines 14 ( Figure 4) stitched in the braid 13.
- the folds or gathers, referenced by 15, thus formed on the edge of the flap 7 are distributed with a density which varies locally in the same direction as the curvature local of said edge.
- the plate 5 of the seat is produced independently of the rest of the cap. He wears on his face destined to come in contact with the top 3a of the cushion 3 usual means intended to cooperate with complementary elements of the frame 2 to produce re-entrant lines L on the carrying surface of the seat cushion.
- the skirt 6 is produced by cutting from a flexible material, such as a fabric-coated-plastic, from two half-pieces 61, 62. These two half-pieces are assembled together by a seam line referenced by 18 in the figures.
- the base 8 is cut from the same material. The different cutting contours correspond to the open projections of the shapes of the cushion portions 3 that the skirt 6 and the base 8 are intended to match.
- the pleating machine is programmable for this purpose. It is fed simultaneously with the braid 13 and with the skirt 6 which it automatically pucks with a local percentage reduction in rating depending on the program it has in memory. The distribution law of folds is determined by preliminary tests on templates.
- the skirt 6 thus preformed is then sewn onto the edge of the plate 5.
- the braid 13 extends beyond the edge of the skirt 6 and at least one of its extensions is used for sewing between the plate 5 and the skirt 6.
- the aforementioned pleating machine, and without interruption, sewing is performed without creasing the skirt 6 on the edge of the contour of the plate 5 and on the braid 13, then the seam with pleating of the edge of the flap 7 of the skirt 6 on the braid 13.
- This operation can moreover be carried out with a braid whose part on which the edge is sewn pleated flap is extended only on one side.
- Another step consists in sewing on the free edge of the base 8 of the profiles 16, then in sewing this base 8 on the rear edge of the plate 5.
- the establishment of the cap 4 on the cushion 3 begins with the assembly of the plate 5 on this cushion 3 either by gluing, or by molding in situ, or by conventional mechanical recall. The cap is then on the cushion 3 in the position shown in FIG. 4.
- the cushion foam is mechanically compressed.
- the skirt 6 is turned over like a sock on the foam and its pleated edge is placed against the frame 2.
- the skirt 6 is then kept in tension between, on the one hand, the plate 5 resting on the foam and, on the other hand, the braid 13.
- the outline delimited by this braid 13 is arranged inside that of the frame 9, so that the skirt 6 is shaped with a flap 7 extending from the outer edge of the frame 9 to edge pleated by the braid 13.
- the cushion 3 is thus enclosed in the cover 4.
- the rear wings 17 of the skirt 6 are then closed on the rear flank 3b of the cushion 3 and held by fitting the female parts 17a of the snaps on the complementary parts carried by the frame 2.
- the cover 4 is then on the cushion 3 in his position shown in figure 2.
- the base 8 is folded over the bottom that constitutes the frame 2 and held thereon by cooperation of the sections 16 with complementary portions of the frame 2 which receive them.
- Positioning eyelets can be provided laterally at the rear of the frame 2 to cooperate with staples carried by the cover 4 and facilitate centering of the cover 4.
- the final appearance of the covered seat 1 is that shown in FIG. 1.
- the invention is not limited to the particular embodiment described but encompasses all the possible variants.
- the braid can be replaced by any other cord stitched along the edge of the skirt flap, such as a ribbon or a similar continuous linear element.
- the covered cushion can be without reinforcement. In the case of cushions other than seat cushions, the cover can be threaded without turning over the cushion.

Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a cover for covering a seat cushion of a motor vehicle, such as a seat cushion for the front seat or rear seat, headrest or armrest, as well as to a method to dress such a cushion.
A seat cushion is usually made of a deformable material such as foam and is bounded by a top, sides and a bottom or bottom carried by a frame. This foam is covered by a cap, such as a cover, in a flexible material. This cap itself comprises a tray, a skirt and a flap extending mutually and which respectively cover, when the cap is in place on the cushion, the top thereof, at least a greater part of its sides and a corresponding strip from its underside. Thus, the cushion and its frame are sandwiched between the tray and the flap of the cap.
To keep this flap in place on the bottom of the cushion and the frame, the free edges of this flap are most often provided with rigid sections which cooperate with complementary means carried by the frame.
An object of the invention is to provide a cap and a method for covering a cushion which dispenses with having over the entire contour defined by the free edges of the flap of such assembly profiles. This represents for mass production of seats both a saving in parts and a saving in considerable assembly time.
It has already been proposed in patent application EP-223 312 to hold the flap of the cap in place on the underside and the frame of the cushion using a tension thread passed through a channel sewn along the free edge of this flap. Once the cap has passed over the cushion, this thread is stretched by traction on its ends, which has the effect of shortening it and thus pressing the flap on the cushion bottom. The free edge of the flap is under tension and is pleated over its entire length.
The present invention provides a cover for covering a motor vehicle seat cushion, cushion defined by a top, sides and a bottom, said cover itself comprising a tray, a skirt and a flap extending mutually and intended to cover respectively the top of the cushion, at least the largest part of its sides and a corresponding strip of its underside, at least the greatest length of the free edge of the flap being pleated and stretched so as to keep the cover in place on the cushion, characterized in that the pleating of the edge of the flap is carried out by sewing this edge in its previously pleated state, on an inextensible bead extending without folds along said edge.
- les plis du bord sont répartis le long de ce bord avec une densité qui varie localement dans le même sens que la courbure locale de ce bord ;
- la jupe est complétée par un volet ou embase prolongeant aussi une portion du plateau et dont le bord libre, sensiblement rectiligne, est destiné à être rabattu contre le dessous du coussin et comprend des moyens pour son accrochage sur ce dessous ;
- l'ensemble constitué par sa jupe et son rabat à bord plissé s'étend sur une majeure partie du contour du plateau principal, sans être refermé sur lui-même, ses extrémités étant sensiblement parallèles et définissant ensemble au moins en partie une ouverture, dont les dimensions sont suffisantes pour permettre la mise en place de la coiffe sur le coussin ;
- le cordon se prolonge, à l'une au moins de ses extrémités, au-delà du bord plissé du rabat par une longueur sur laquelle sont cousus et ainsi assemblés au moins en partie les bords de portions du plateau et de la jupe qui se prolongent ;
- la coiffe recouvre un coussin d'assise, ce coussin présentant un flanc avant, un flanc arrière et deux flancs latéraux ;
- l'ensemble constitué par sa jupe et son rabat à bord plissé recouvre les flancs avant et latéraux du coussin, l'embase recouvrant le flanc arrière ;
- the folds of the edge are distributed along this edge with a density which varies locally in the same direction as the local curvature of this edge;
- the skirt is completed by a flap or base also extending a portion of the plate and whose free edge, substantially rectilinear, is intended to be folded against the underside of the cushion and comprises means for its attachment to this bottom;
- the assembly constituted by its skirt and its flap with a pleated edge extends over a major part of the contour of the main plate, without being closed in on itself, its ends being substantially parallel and together defining at least in part an opening, of which the dimensions are sufficient to allow the placement of the cap on the cushion;
- the cord extends, at at least one of its ends, beyond the pleated edge of the flap by a length over which are sewn and thus assembled at least in parts the edges of portions of the plate and of the skirt which extend;
- the cover covers a seat cushion, this cushion having a front flank, a rear flank and two lateral flanks;
- the assembly formed by its skirt and its flap with a pleated edge covers the front and side flanks of the cushion, the base covering the rear flank;
- the cover further comprises wings extending the ends of the base or of the assembly constituted by its skirt and its flap with pleated edge, these wings ensuring the complement of the covering of the sides of the cushion by the base and the aforementioned assembly .
The invention also provides a method for covering a seat cushion of a motor vehicle.
- on répartit les plis du bord le long de ce bord avec une densité qui varie localement dans le même sens que la courbure locale future de ce bord, après mise en place de la coiffe sur le coussin ;
- the folds of the edge are distributed along this edge with a density which varies locally in the same direction as the future local curvature of this edge, after placing the cap on the cushion;
- in a single operation, successively sews on different portions of the same bead the pleated edge of the flap and of the edges to be assembled from the plate and the skirt.
- la figure 1 est une représentation en perspective avec arrachés partiels d'un coussin d'assise de siège avant de véhicule automobile recouvert par une coiffe conforme à un mode de réalisation particulier de l'invention ;
- la figure 2 est une représentation selon une autre perspective du dessous du coussin et de la coiffe de la figure 1, la coiffe n'étant que partiellement en place sur ledit coussin ;
- la figure 3 est une représentation en vue de dessous d'un détail de la coiffe de la figure 2 et de son coussin ;
- Figure 1 is a perspective representation with partial cutaway of a seat cushion of the front seat of a motor vehicle covered by a cover according to a particular embodiment of the invention;
- Figure 2 is a representation from another perspective of the underside of the cushion and the cap of Figure 1, the cap being only partially in place on said cushion;
- Figure 3 is a representation in bottom view of a detail of the cap of Figure 2 and its cushion;
- Figure 4, finally, is a perspective representation of the cushion and the cap of the previous figures, before the introduction of the skirt of the cap on this cushion.
The seat of the front seat of a motor vehicle, referenced by 1, which has been shown in the figures, mainly comprises a
It can be seen in FIG. 2 that the cover 4 also has a
On the free edge of the
Each of the two ends of the
As can more particularly be seen in FIG. 3, the pleating means 12 mainly comprise a
The mounting of the cap 4 on the
The
The
We sew, using a pleating machine known to the skilled person, the edge of the
In an advantageous embodiment, the
Le coussin 3 se trouve ainsi enserré dans la coiffe 4.Once this assembly has been completed, the cushion foam is mechanically compressed. The
It should be noted that, so that the edge on which the
Then, the
Des oeillets de positionnement (non représentés) peuvent être prévus latéralement à l'arrière de l'armature 2 pour coopérer avec des agrafes portées par la coiffe 4 et faciliter le centrage de la coiffe 4.Positioning eyelets (not shown) can be provided laterally at the rear of the
L'aspect final de l'assise 1 recouverte est celui représenté sur la figure 1.The final appearance of the covered seat 1 is that shown in FIG. 1.
- ils permettent une grande économie de pièces ;
- alors que dans les techniques de l'art antérieur les plis du rabat de la coiffe présentaient une répartition qui devait être homogénéisée d'un siège à l'autre par une intervention manuelle qui excluait une répétabilité industrielle, le plissage du bord du rabat de la coiffe que réalise la machine à plisser est d'une répétabilité parfaite, de sorte que le coussin recouvert présente en série une finition de grande qualité ;
- la tension conférée au bord du rabat et donc à la jupe est également répétable d'un coussin à l'autre ;
- dans le cas où les bords du plateau et de la jupe sont assemblés entre eux en même temps que sur la tresse, la ligne d'assemblage présente un aspect tendu et roulotté uniforme sans frisure ou flottement ;
- la jupe ne présente au niveau des courbures du cadre de l'armature aucun bec d'angle alors que ceux-ci sont courants avec des jupes à profilés plastiques ;
- les effilochages susceptibles d'apparaître au niveau du bord plissé du rabat cousu sur la tresse sont arrêtés par celle-ci ;
- they allow a great saving of parts;
- whereas in the techniques of the prior art the folds of the flap of the cap had a distribution which had to be homogenized from one seat to another by manual intervention which excluded industrial repeatability, the pleating of the edge of the flap of the cap produced by the pleating machine is perfectly repeatable, so that the covered cushion has a high quality finish as standard;
- the tension imparted to the edge of the flap and therefore to the skirt is also repeatable from one cushion to another;
- in the case where the edges of the plate and the skirt are assembled together at the same time as on the braid, the assembly line has a uniform taut and rolled appearance without crimping or floating;
- the skirt has no beak at the level of the curvatures of the frame of the frame, whereas these are common with skirts with plastic profiles;
- the fraying likely to appear at the pleated edge of the flap sewn on the braid is stopped by it;
- if in use, the braid is cut in one place, the edges of the skirt remain pleated at the other places since the braid is stitched over the entire length by the sewing threads, so that the headdress remains in place on the seat cushion.
As will be understood, the invention is not limited to the particular embodiment described but encompasses all the possible variants. In particular, the braid can be replaced by any other cord stitched along the edge of the skirt flap, such as a ribbon or a similar continuous linear element. The covered cushion can be without reinforcement. In the case of cushions other than seat cushions, the cover can be threaded without turning over the cushion.
