Abstract

A steel wire for springs which is excellent in the formability into springs and the prevention of environmental pollution. The wire has a surface coated with an amino acid compound after drawing, quenching or tempering, and the coating serves to improve the lubricity and prevent the seizing and chattering in the step of forming into springs. Although the amino acid compound is thermally decomposed in the stress-relieving annealing step after the spring forming step, it does not emit any harmful gas thereby.
