- Ciguatera poisoning is a particular type of fish poisoning which results from the ingestion of certain types of contaminated fish. Intoxication is associated with the consumption of toxins produced by the dino- flagellate Gambierdiscus toxicus and is subsequently passed along the marine food chain to man. Ciguatoxins are polyether marine toxins. Approximately 27 different ciguatoxins are known, approximately 23 of which are toxic to. man.

Abstract
La présente invention se rapporte à un procédé de détection de la présence de ciguatoxine ou d'une toxine marine de polyéther apparentée dans du sérum humain. Les étapes de détection de la ciguatoxine consistent à isoler un échantillon de sérum, à attacher et fixer la toxine à un support et à rincer le complexe support-toxine qui en résulte dans une solution tampon pour enlever toute toxine non liée et tout fixatif résiduel. On détecte la présence de cignatoxine en liant une antitoxine, un anticorps agissant contre la ciguatoxine conjuguée avec une enzyme, au complexe toxine-support pour former un complexe toxine-antitoxine-enzyme. L'enzyme du complexe toxine-antitoxine-enzyme est analysée et la quantité de produit formée par l'enzyme est quantifiée. Un kit permettant d'effectuer l'analyse est aussi décrit.The present invention relates to a method for detecting the presence of ciguatoxin or a related polyether marine toxin in human serum. The steps to detect ciguatoxin include isolating a serum sample, attaching and fixing the toxin to a support, and rinsing the resulting support-toxin complex in a buffer solution to remove any unbound toxin and any remaining fixative. The presence of cignatoxin is detected by binding an antitoxin, an antibody against ciguatoxin conjugated with an enzyme, to the toxin-support complex to form a toxin-antitoxin-enzyme complex. The enzyme of the toxin-antitoxin-enzyme complex is analyzed and the amount of product formed by the enzyme is quantified. A kit for performing the analysis is also described.
