Abstract
Handle for handling a roll of sheet material with a hollow cylindrical core, comprising a tapering bush-shaped element (1) extending from a stop edge (2) to one end, and a number of lips which are disposed near the other end between the stop edge and a flange (3) and project towards the one end, and of which at least an end part, from the stop edge, overlaps a part of the bush-shaped element adjacent thereto at a radial distance therefrom.
Description
- The invention relates to an article for serving as a handle in the handling of a roll of sheet material with a hollow cylindrical core, comprising a part for insertion into the core from one end thereof, which part comprises a bush-shaped element tapering towards one end of the article, and a part lying near the other end of the article which comprises an annular radially projecting stop edge which can be brought to rest against the end face of the core on insertion of the handle, and an element forming the other end of the article in the form of a flange projecting radially outwards. Such an article is known from European Patent Specification 0,200,662 or German Patent Application 3,405,753.
- A pair of handles of the abovementioned type are used during the packing or wrapping of an article, in which case the free end of the sheet material rolled into a roll is attached to the article, and an operator then takes hold of the roll of material at its ends by means of the handles inserted into it and unrolls the material from the roll around the article, the core of the roll rotating relative to the handles.
- In the case of the known article the part to be inserted into the core is formed by the abovementioned tapering bush-shaped element and a second bush-shaped element connecting thereto and tapering towards the other end of the article, so that these two elements are connected to each other at their largest peripheries, while a number of lengthwise slits are provided running all the way through in the walls of both elements. The diameter of the connecting region between the abovementioned two tapering elements is slightly larger in the case of the loose handle than the internal diameter of the core, so that when the handle is inserted into the core, the wall parts of the two elements separated from each other by the slits are pressed inwards and, as a result of the elasticity of these wall parts, the connecting region between the two elements is pressed against the inside of the core, so that said core can rotate about this region.
- The disadvantage of this known handle is that, as a result of the relatively great distance between the stop edge and the abovementioned connecting region between the two tapering elements, the handle in the inserted position can tilt slightly, which adversely affects good functioning of the handle during unrolling of the material, while the handle can come out when a roll of material is being lifted up on the handle, with the result that the roll falls and may be damaged.
- The object of the invention is to provide an article of the abovementioned type which does not have this disadvantage.
- This object is achieved through the fact that in the case of the article according to the invention the abovementioned tapering bush-shaped element extends essentially from the abovementioned stop edge to the abovementioned one end of the article and a number of lips are provided spaced apart near the other end of the article, between the stop edge and the flange, and projecting towards the abovementioned one end of the article, while at least an end part of each of these lips, from said edge, overlaps an adjoining part of the bush-shaped element at a radial distance from said element.
- In the case of a handle designed in this way and inserted into the core, the lips grip around the end part of the core resting against the stop edge, with the result that the contact area between the handle and the core lies near the end of the core, so that the handle cannot tilt and come away from the roll when the latter is being lifted on it. Moreover, the handle can easily be inserted into the core with one hand, since no parts need be pressed in here, as in the case of the known handle. The handle also has a completely smooth internal surface, so that the user cannot sustain any finger injury.
- The lips advantageously extend essentially from the inner periphery of the flange.
- The lips preferably run slanting towards the abovementioned one end of the article, so that as a result of the elasticity of the lips they are pressed against the outside of the core.
- The invention is explained in greater detail with reference to the drawing, in which:
- Figure 1 shows an article according to the invention serving as a handle, partially in elevation, partially in axial cross-section, and
- Figure 2 shows a roll of material in which handles according to Figure 1 are inserted.
- As shown in Figure 1, the article comprises a bush-
shaped element 1 tapering towards one end and bounded by theannular stop edge 2 at its other end, and anannular flange 3 forming the other end of the article. Formed near the inner periphery of theflange 3 are a number of projectinglips 4 which overlap thestop edge 2 and the adjoining part of theelement 1 at a radial distance. - Figure 2 shows a roll of material, comprising a
cylindrical core 5 around which asheet material 6 is wound, a handle according to Figure 1 being inserted into both ends of thecore 5, and in the case of each handle thestop edge 2 comes to rest against the end face of thecore 5, and thelips 4 rest against the outside of thecore 5 and, through their elasticity, press against said core.
