Abstract

The invention relates to a chloride-free catalyst for the finishing of textiles with formaldehyde-free crosslinking agents containing magnesium and fluoborate ions in the ratio 1:0.1 to 4. <??>The catalyst permits odour-free finishing.

Description

Figure imgb0001

Because of the ongoing discussion about the use of formaldehyde-containing auxiliaries in the textile industry, formaldehyde-free crosslinking agents, for example those of the formula I, are increasingly used, for example, in the finishing of textiles
Figure imgb0001

in the
R¹, R² = H or C₁- to C₃-alkyl with the proviso that at least one of the radicals R¹ and R² is a C₁- to C₃-alkyl group, and R³, R⁴ are H or C₁- to C₄-alkyl.

In large-scale production in the textile factories, however, an extremely unpleasant odor is sometimes noticed on the finished goods, which was not noticed during the market launch phase of these crosslinkers. This odor formation is apparently the result of a catalytic decomposition of the crosslinker at higher (condensation) temperatures. Easily volatile compounds are formed, which lead to unpleasant smells in the finished goods - especially in the case of goods that have already been assembled and packed airtight.

The object of the invention was to find a way of avoiding this odor nuisance.

The invention now relates to a chloride-free catalyst, in the use of which there is no more odor nuisance and which contains magnesium and fluoborate ions in a molar weight ratio of Mg² : BF₄ such as 1: 0.1 to 4, preferably 1: 0.2 to 2.

The catalyst is preferably used as an aqueous solution which contains 15 to 40% by weight, preferably 20 to 35%, of salt. The magnesium and fluoborate ions can be in salt form, for example as magnesium sulfate, -phosphate, -nitrate, -acetate, -glycolate, -citrate or -adipate or sodium, lithium, potassium or zinc fluoroborate. The use of magnesium sulfate, magnesium nitrate and sodium fluoroborate is particularly preferred.

The catalyst is used in the finishing process, e.g. usual for magnesium chloride, application amounts are in the range of approximately 30 to 50 parts of a 20% solution, for example, based on 100 parts of the crosslinking agent (45% solution). There are no deviations from the known methods in the new catalyst.
