Les exigences des moteurs modernes, en matière de consommation, de performances et de pollution et le développement de l'électronique ont conduit à la mise au point de nouveaux dispositifs d'allumage et en particulier les dispositifs d'allumage dits "statique" dans lesquels ont été supprimées toute ou partie des pièces mécaniques sujettent à l'usure en les remplaçant par des éléments statiques à base d'électronique. Parmi les différents dispositifs réalisés, le plus avancé technologiquement et le plus performant est l'allumage électronique intégral avec une bobine par bougie. Cette organisation basée sur l'utilisation d'une bobine par bougie permet notamment de supprimer le faisceau de câbles haute tension puisque les bobines sont disposées le plus attenantes possible des bougies qu'elles desservent : chaque bobine se situant au-dessus de sa bougie sensiblement dans l'axe de cette dernière. Différents montages ont vu le jour, on peut notamment cité l'allumage S.D.I. développé par la société SAAB, décrit dans le brevet EP-153.927, à décharge capacitive, entièrement statique, à avance cartographique et commandé par microprocesseur avec positionnement angulaire et régime moteur fournis par un capteur sur le vilebrequin.
