It is supposed that the arcing goes out before the end of the travel of the moving equipment, i.e. for an average arc duration of 12 milliseconds (at 60 Hz) or 15 ms (at 50 Hz). During this period, there is contact between the parts 101 and 105, either directly or via a short arc when the parts 101 and 105 have separated. This contact has the effect of inserting the varistor into the circuit to be cut; if a sufficient overvoltage occurs, the varistor will operate, by inserting its ohmic value in the circuit, thus limiting the overvoltage.
- the arc duration mentioned above corresponds to a varistor insertion time of the order of 15 ms. This duration is sufficient to ensure the effective limitation of overvoltages, in particular during the deactivation of line reactors, the cut of idle lines and the cut on three-phase fault with regard to the first pole of the circuit breaker which cuts.
- the low voltage applied to the varistor when the circuit breaker is in the open position prevents the varistor from any risk of thermal runaway, partial discharges, etc., as did the series switch of the prior art described above.
- the varistor When closing the circuit breaker, the varistor is first inserted into the circuit by contacting parts 101 and 105; the rear contact of the arcing contacts 6 and 11 then short-circuits the varistor.
