Definitions
- wood In its original state, wood has a high moisture content.
- the moisture content of the wood which is mostly in the form of sawn timber as the starting product, must be reduced to a certain residual moisture content.
- lumber is dried outdoors and / or in technical systems using various drying processes. So-called fresh air exhaust air drying chambers, which work according to the principle of thermal evaporation drying in a forced warm air flow, are of the greatest importance for technical lumber drying in practice.
- the "drying" phase is programmed in individual time stages, with each time stage having a corresponding target air temperature and a corresponding target air humidity, coordinated with the type of wood to be dried, wood thickness, initial wood moisture and desired end wood moisture , is assigned.
- the disadvantage of this method is that the climate in the drying chamber is independent of the actually decreasing moisture of the wood is controlled; its use requires extensive practical experience with drying under the same conditions (type of wood, wood thickness, initial moisture), which must be taken into account when determining the drying programs.
- Table 1 An example of a "time-dependent" drying program is shown in Table 1.
- a disadvantage of the "wood moisture dependent" control method is the measurement inaccuracy of the current electrical wood moisture measurement method. Especially with freshly sawn wood, with moisture over 60%, the measurement inaccuracy is already ⁇ 20 and more percent. For this reason, the specifications of the drying programs regarding the climate setpoints for the "drying" phase are not followed with sufficient accuracy in accordance with the moisture actually present in the wood. In drying practice, this often results in the control system making an early or late change in the climate setpoints during the "drying" phase. A premature change in the climate in the drying chamber in the direction of a tightening of the drying causes the occurrence of drying errors in the wood (cracks, tension, deformation and discoloration). On the other hand, a delayed climate exacerbation is associated with disproportionately long drying times.
- the invention is therefore based on the object, while avoiding the disadvantages of the time-dependent and wood moisture-dependent control method, to provide a method which is capable of making appropriate changes in the climate in fresh air / exhaust air drying chambers during the "drying" phase independently, on the one hand to achieve shorter drying times and on the other hand to avoid drying damage.
- the invention is based on the known physical relationship between the drying process and the temperature profile in hygroscopic goods during thermal evaporation drying. The following can be said:
- the same effect can also be achieved by reducing the relative humidity of the surrounding air, because this also stimulates evaporation and the good temperature drops compared to the dry temperature of the surrounding air. When there is no more evaporation, the good temperature reaches the level of the dry temperature of the surrounding air.
- This physically justified situation can be used for an automatic control of the drying of sawn timber in fresh air / exhaust air drying chambers during the "drying" phase.
- the underlying idea is to continuously measure the temperature in the middle of the board thickness of the drying lumber and to use the periodically queried temperature measured value as a guide variable for controlling the control variables air temperature and relative air humidity in the drying chamber in order to achieve a desired, higher, or maintain a lower drying speed.
- the implementation of the control method according to the invention requires the installation of known electrical temperature sensors in the middle of the board thickness of some representative boards of the drying batch, which are connected via cable lines to the process computer of the control system of the drying chamber.
- the drying cycle is controlled according to the instructions of a program, which is entered in the memory of the process computer.
- the program also contains customary instructions for the "heating” and “conditioning” phases, which complete the entire drying process.
- these are setpoints for the air temperature and the relative air humidity that can be reached in the drying chamber at the end of the heating up phase, as well as the default time for the duration of the heating up phase.
- the numerical instructions a), b), c) and d) are to be determined from test drying for each type of wood and wood thickness to be dried, depending on the desired level of drying and demands on the drying quality of the sawn timber.
- the numerical instruction e), depending on the desired final moisture content of the timber to be dried, can be found in known tables for wood moisture equilibrium numbers depending on temperature and relative air humidity.
- Table 3 An example of a drying program based on the control method according to the invention is shown in Table 3.
- the mode of operation of the program instructions on the climate in the drying chamber is explained on the basis of the following exemplary embodiment and the numerical information from Table 3. It is assumed that only one temperature sensor is attached in the middle of the board thickness of a wooden board of the drying batch.
- the air temperature and the relative humidity in the drying chamber are raised to the setpoints of 40 ° C air temperature and 70% relative humidity within the specified 5-hour duration of the heating phase. This results in a drying climate in the chamber at the end of the heating phase, which causes a corresponding initial intensity of drying of the sawn timber.
- the wood temperature reaches a certain value that is below the setpoint of the air temperature.
- the temperature display of the wood temperature sensor is activated as a reference variable for controlling the air temperature and the relative humidity. On the basis of the specified 1-hour time interval for the query of the wood temperature, it is determined after the end of each hour whether and if so to what extent a temperature increase compared to the last query has taken place.
- the drying climate in the drying chamber is gradually tightened in the course of the "drying" phase in order to counteract the decreasing evaporation intensity in the wood.
- the choice of the proportionality factors X and Y and the time factor Z determine the desired extent of the intensification of the evaporation and thus have a decisive influence on the duration of the "drying" phase.
- the temperature equality between wood and air means that no more moisture evaporation takes place in the wood, because a state of equilibrium has been established between the environment and the moisture content of the wood, or the desired final wood moisture has been reached.
- This state is determined by the process computer of the control system as the end of the phase "Drying" rated.
- the control system is instructed by the drying program to set the target values for the "Conditioning” phase - 60 ° C air temperature and 55% relative air humidity. After the specified time of 24 hours has passed, the "Conditioning" phase and thus the entire drying cycle is completed.
- the main advantage of the control method according to the invention for sawn timber drying in fresh air / exhaust air drying chambers is that it does not require any time (as in the "time-dependent” control method) and without a measurement of the wood moisture decrease (as in the "wood moisture-dependent” control method).
- the change in the drying climate in the drying chamber by the control system in the direction of a tightening of the drying takes place solely on the basis of the characteristic course of the temperature in the middle of the board for each type of wood and each thickness. It is possible - by choosing the proportionality factors X and Y and the time factor Z - to determine the extent of the tightening of the drying climate and thus to influence the duration and the drying quality in an advantageous manner.
- the electrical temperature measurement in the wood can be carried out with the usual technical means with a sufficiently high accuracy. This ensures that no faulty measured value displays, such as in the case of electrical wood moisture measurement, lead to a premature or delayed change in the drying climate compared to the actual moisture level of the wood. In this way drying damage can be avoided on the one hand and drying times as short as possible can be achieved on the other hand.

Abstract
Description
In its original state, wood has a high moisture content. For further processing for a wide variety of purposes, the moisture content of the wood, which is mostly in the form of sawn timber as the starting product, must be reduced to a certain residual moisture content. To achieve this, lumber is dried outdoors and / or in technical systems using various drying processes. So-called fresh air exhaust air drying chambers, which work according to the principle of thermal evaporation drying in a forced warm air flow, are of the greatest importance for technical lumber drying in practice.
Currently, automatic control systems equipped with process computers are mainly used in new fresh air / exhaust air drying chambers. The entire drying process is controlled by a drying program that is entered in the process computer. The course of a drying cycle is usually divided into the phases "heating", "drying" and "air conditioning". Depending on how the climate in the drying chamber, characterized by the air temperature and the relative humidity, is controlled during the actual drying ("drying" phase), in practice "time-dependent" and "wood moisture-dependent" control methods are used almost exclusively.
In the "time-dependent" control process, the "drying" phase is programmed in individual time stages, with each time stage having a corresponding target air temperature and a corresponding target air humidity, coordinated with the type of wood to be dried, wood thickness, initial wood moisture and desired end wood moisture , is assigned. The disadvantage of this method is that the climate in the drying chamber is independent of the actually decreasing moisture of the wood is controlled; its use requires extensive practical experience with drying under the same conditions (type of wood, wood thickness, initial moisture), which must be taken into account when determining the drying programs. An example of a "time-dependent" drying program is shown in Table 1.
In the "wood moisture dependent" control method, however, the climate in the drying chamber is controlled during the "drying" phase due to the decrease in the moisture of the wood. The wood moisture of representative boards of the drying batch is measured electrically, using the resistance principle, by means of inserted measuring electrodes and transmitted to the process computer of the control system via cable lines. In the drying program, setpoints for the air temperature and the relative air humidity are specified for the "drying" phase, which the control system must set when the wood moisture reaches certain decreasing values. An example of a "wood moisture dependent" drying program is shown in Table 2.
A disadvantage of the "wood moisture dependent" control method is the measurement inaccuracy of the current electrical wood moisture measurement method. Especially with freshly sawn wood, with moisture over 60%, the measurement inaccuracy is already ± 20 and more percent.
The invention is therefore based on the object, while avoiding the disadvantages of the time-dependent and wood moisture-dependent control method, to provide a method which is capable of making appropriate changes in the climate in fresh air / exhaust air drying chambers during the "drying" phase independently, on the one hand to achieve shorter drying times and on the other hand to avoid drying damage.
Es kann hierzu folgendes gesagt werden:The invention is based on the known physical relationship between the drying process and the temperature profile in hygroscopic goods during thermal evaporation drying. The following can be said:
As long as a moist good, under given climatic conditions (air temperature and relative humidity), releases moisture to the environment through evaporation, its temperature remains below the dry temperature of the surrounding air. This phenomenon is due to the heat of vaporization consumed during evaporation, which is removed from the material to be dried. The temperature difference that occurs between the surrounding air and the material for this reason depends on the intensity of evaporation, ie on the drying rate. A decrease in the evaporation intensity always results in an increase in temperature in the material to be dried. If the drying temperature of the surrounding air is raised, the difference to the good temperature increases and the drying speed increases. The same effect can also be achieved by reducing the relative humidity of the surrounding air, because this also stimulates evaporation and the good temperature drops compared to the dry temperature of the surrounding air. When there is no more evaporation, the good temperature reaches the level of the dry temperature of the surrounding air.
This physically justified situation can be used for an automatic control of the drying of sawn timber in fresh air / exhaust air drying chambers during the "drying" phase. The underlying idea is to continuously measure the temperature in the middle of the board thickness of the drying lumber and to use the periodically queried temperature measured value as a guide variable for controlling the control variables air temperature and relative air humidity in the drying chamber in order to achieve a desired, higher, or maintain a lower drying speed.
The inventive concept is explained in more detail using an exemplary embodiment. The usual setup of a fresh air / exhaust air drying chamber, equipped with a control system with process computer and associated electrical sensors for the air temperature and the relative air humidity, is assumed.
The implementation of the control method according to the invention requires the installation of known electrical temperature sensors in the middle of the board thickness of some representative boards of the drying batch, which are connected via cable lines to the process computer of the control system of the drying chamber. The drying cycle is controlled according to the instructions of a program, which is entered in the memory of the process computer. In addition to the instructions according to the invention for the "drying" phase, the program also contains customary instructions for the "heating" and "conditioning" phases, which complete the entire drying process. For the "heating up" phase, these are setpoints for the air temperature and the relative air humidity that can be reached in the drying chamber at the end of the heating up phase, as well as the default time for the duration of the heating up phase. For the "Conditioning" phase, these are setpoints for the air temperature and the relative humidity, which must be set by the control system in the drying chamber at the beginning of the "Conditioning" phase, as well as the default time for the Duration of the "air conditioning" phase.
- a) A first proportionality factor X for controlling the air temperature as a function of the wood temperature measured values, which specifies how the air temperature is to be increased in proportion to the increase in the wood temperature during the drying phase. The selectable values for the first proportionality factor X are from 1 to 4, with the rule that the larger the value, the sharper the drying.
- b) A second proportionality factor Y for the control of the relative air humidity as a function of the wood temperature measured values, which specifies how the relative air humidity is to be reduced in proportion to the increase in the wood temperature during the drying phase. The selectable values for the second proportionality factor Y are from 1 to 4, whereby the larger the value, the sharper the drying.
- c) A time factor Z , with which the time interval for querying the wood temperature sensors is determined.
- d) A first basic value LT max . for the air temperature. This first basic value specifies the maximum temperature that the air in the chamber may reach. The control system of the chamber also receives the instruction to set the air temperature in the chamber to the specified first basic value LT max . to keep constant until the end of the "drying" phase.
- e) A second basic value LF for the relative air humidity, which must be set in the chamber after reaching the first basic value of the air temperature LT max ., and kept constant until the end of the "drying" phase.
The numerical instructions a), b), c) and d) are to be determined from test drying for each type of wood and wood thickness to be dried, depending on the desired level of drying and demands on the drying quality of the sawn timber. The numerical instruction e), depending on the desired final moisture content of the timber to be dried, can be found in known tables for wood moisture equilibrium numbers depending on temperature and relative air humidity.
An example of a drying program based on the control method according to the invention is shown in Table 3. The mode of operation of the program instructions on the climate in the drying chamber is explained on the basis of the following exemplary embodiment and the numerical information from Table 3. It is assumed that only one temperature sensor is attached in the middle of the board thickness of a wooden board of the drying batch.
At the beginning of the drying cycle, the air temperature and the relative humidity in the drying chamber are raised to the setpoints of 40 ° C air temperature and 70% relative humidity within the specified 5-hour duration of the heating phase. This results in a drying climate in the chamber at the end of the heating phase, which causes a corresponding initial intensity of drying of the sawn timber. The wood temperature reaches a certain value that is below the setpoint of the air temperature. At the beginning of the "drying" phase, the temperature display of the wood temperature sensor is activated as a reference variable for controlling the air temperature and the relative humidity. On the basis of the specified 1-hour time interval for the query of the wood temperature, it is determined after the end of each hour whether and if so to what extent a temperature increase compared to the last query has taken place. If no, or only a small, for example 0.1 ° C, temperature increase is registered, then there is no instruction to the control system to increase the air temperature in the drying chamber, or lower the relative humidity. The setpoints of the air temperature and the relative air humidity thus remain up to date. However, if the temperature increase of the wood is above 0.1 ° C, the registered difference between the current and the last query of the wood temperature sensor with the specified proportionality factor X multiplied and added to the last setpoint of the air temperature. The result of the addition is then adopted as the new setpoint for the air temperature by the climate control system. The same procedure is used for the hourly polling of the wood temperature sensor with the relative air humidity, only in this case the setpoint of the relative air humidity is reduced in accordance with the proportionality factor Y.
In this way, the drying climate in the drying chamber is gradually tightened in the course of the "drying" phase in order to counteract the decreasing evaporation intensity in the wood. The choice of the proportionality factors X and Y and the time factor Z determine the desired extent of the intensification of the evaporation and thus have a decisive influence on the duration of the "drying" phase.
If the air temperature in the drying chamber exceeds the specified basic value LT max. = 75 ° C reached, the wood temperature is deactivated as a reference variable. At the same time, the control system receives the instruction to set the air temperature in the drying chamber to the specified basic value LT max. = 75 ° C now to keep constant and to set the relative air humidity to the specified basic value LF = 60% and also to keep it constant. The "drying" phase continues until the wood temperature reaches the air temperature LT max. = Has reached 75 ° C. The temperature equality between wood and air means that no more moisture evaporation takes place in the wood, because a state of equilibrium has been established between the environment and the moisture content of the wood, or the desired final wood moisture has been reached. This state is determined by the process computer of the control system as the end of the phase "Drying" rated. At the same time, the control system is instructed by the drying program to set the target values for the "Conditioning" phase - 60 ° C air temperature and 55% relative air humidity. After the specified time of 24 hours has passed, the "Conditioning" phase and thus the entire drying cycle is completed.
