Definitions

  • the present invention relates to sealant applicators and particularly to those used for pumping expanding foam compositions into pipes.
  • a settable foam composition Particularly for closing off flow passages within pipes, or for filling other large cavities, it is known to use a settable foam composition.
  • This is generally produced by mixing a resin and a hardener which together form an expanding foam composition.
  • resin and hardener are supplied in separate containers and are mixed immediately prior to use.
  • the mixing is generally carried out in an open tub and the reacting mixture is then poured into a cartridge for injection into the pipe.
  • the components may contain hazardous chemicals, so that the operator should be provided with protective clothing.
  • the cartridge, mixing tub and mixing spatula all have to be discarded, which is not only wasteful but poses further toxic risks.
  • the acid residues left in the hardener container have to be neutralized with water before the container is disposed of.
  • the subject matter of the present invention may overcome these problems by providing methods and means for the safer handling and disposal of these materials.
  • the present invention provides a sealant applicator device comprising a piston-and-cylinder assembly wherein the cylinder has an outlet conduit and a cutting means projecting into the cylinder interior whereby a sachet received in the cylinder is urgeable by the piston against the cutting element.
  • the cutting element may be provided by a disposable nozzle head which provides an end wall portion of the cylinder and the outlet conduit. Alternatively the entire assembly may be disposable.
  • the cutting means may comprise an annular array of cutting elements disposed around the outlet conduit.
  • the cutting means may comprise a domed portion located within the cylinder with its convex side facing away from the end wall through which the conduit extends. The domed portion has an opening which is aligned with the outlet conduit; the cutting elements being disposed around said opening.
  • the present invention also provides a method of dispensing a sealant which comprises the steps of:
  • Figs. 1-3 show a sealant applicator 10, which comprises a hollow cylindrical body 12, a disposable nozzle head 14, a disposable injection tube 16 and a piston component 18 slidable within the hollow cylindrical body 12.
  • the body 12 is defined by a cylinder wall 13. It is open at one end to provide an inlet 20, and partly closed at the other end by an annular wall 24 whose central opening defines an outlet 22.
  • the disposable nozzle 14 comprises an annular plate 26 with a short coaxial tubular sleeve 28, so that an 26.
  • the diameter of the plate 26 is slightly less than the internal diameter of the body 12 and similarly the diameter of the cylindrical sleeve 28 is slightly less than that of the outlet 22.
  • the disposable nozzle head 14 may be inserted into the body 12 with the tube 28 projecting out of the outlet 22 and the annular plate 26 abutting against the annular wall 24 of the body 12.
  • a piercing knife 32 is located generally within the tubular sleeve 28.
  • the disposable injection tube 16 comprises a section of cylindrical tubing 36 whose end may be pushed on the tubular sleeve 28 of the nozzle 14.
  • the piston component 18 of the sealant applicator 10 comprises a head 40 dimensioned so that it may pass down the cavity of the body 12, with its walls in sealing engagement with the internal circumferential wall of the body 12.
  • the piston head 40 may be actuated by means well known in the art.
  • the sealant applicator 10 of the present invention is designed for use with hermetically sealed sachets 44 known in the art.
  • the sachets are divided into two compartments A and B by a rupturable barrier 46 located within the sachet 44 and between the sections A and B.
  • the separate components of a sealant i.e. the resin and the hardener, may be sealed individually and in predetermined amounts within the compartments A and B.
  • the reaction between the resin and hardener to form the expanding foam composition may be started by rupturing the frangible membrane 46 e.g. by applying pressure to one section of the sachet 44 thereby forcing the contents of that section into the other section of the sachet 44.
  • the resin and hardener may be mixed by quickly kneading the closed sachet. This blending causes the resin and hardener to react and start to expand.
  • the intact sachet 44 may then be placed via the inlet 20 into the central cavity of the body 12.
  • the piston head 40 is then inserted into the cavity of the body 12 and pushed down to exert pressure on the sachet 44, thereby moving the sachet down the cavity 13 to press the sachet 44 against the head 26 of the nozzle 14.
  • the sharp point 34 of the knife 32 protruding above the plane of the plate 26 pierces the sachet 44. Because of the pressure exerted: a) by the piston head 40; and b) by the expanding sachet contents, the sealant is forced to pass along the outlet passage 30 of the nozzle 14, to be expelled out of the sealant applicator 10 via the disposable injection tube 16. Further movement of the piston head 40 down the cavity 13 squeezes all the sachet 44 contents out of the sealant applicator 10.
  • the sachet forms a body 50 of concertinaed material locating against the nozzle head 26.
  • the piston head 40 may be retracted from
  • the piston head 40 may be retracted from the cavity of the hollow cylindrical body 12, the disposable injection tube 16 removed and discarded and the tubular body 12 inverted over a suitable waste container to discard the disposable nozzle 14 and empty sachet from the device.
  • FIGS. 4 and 5 show a second embodiment. This is in many respects similar to the first, and corresponding components bear the same reference numerals.
  • a piston 18 is displaceable in a cylinder 12 to drive a sachet 44 against cutting means 34 so that the sachet's contents are expelled through a nozzle 28.
  • the nozzle 28 is now externally secured over a nozzle portion 50 fast with the annular end wall 24 of the cylinder.
  • a domed array 52 holding a plurality of cutting elements 45 disposed around a central opening 54. This allows very efficient evacuation of the sachet's contents. Thereafter the whole dispenser assembly is discarded.
  • the small amount of the sachet's contents remaining therein will be a cured polyurethane foam which is quite inert and safe to dispose of.
