Abstract
Description
- The present invention relates to roll-on liquid product dispensers and particularly to such dispensers having an elongated roller. In particular the present invention is directed to a roll-on liquid dispenser having an improved sealing arrangement.
- In connection with roll-on dispensers having spherical rollers mounted in a socket, sealing of the container is frequently accomplished by providing an overcap that forces the spherical roller into the socket to seal a fluid opening at the base of the socket. Alternately there may be provided an overcap which sealingly engages the container around the socket.
- This type of seal arrangement has been applied to wide roll on dispensers having an elongated roller, but the variation in shape between an eliptical roller and the sealing surfaces of the fluid opening can make effective sealing difficult. Likewise, it is difficult to obtain a good seal between an oval overcap and an oval container.
- US Patent 4,723,860 shows an arrangement for a wide roll-on dispenser having a valve member positioned between the roller and the fluid opening. The valve member is biased by a spring into a closed position and opened by pressure from downward movement of the roller. This arrangement requires significant force by the user on the roller to initiate and continue fluid flow during use.
- US Patent 3,281,887 describes a dispensing device for a container which has a permanent bellows fold incorporated in it, which permits the movement of a valve member to open and close this dispensing device.
- US Patent 4,723,860 describes a liquid dispenser for cosmetic products which comprises a liquid containing bottle with a neck and an outlet opening, a valve made up of a helical spring which presses on the underside of an oval roller applicator, and an overcap, with the roller being craddled in a socket in which it is supported. In use, fluid is only permitted to flow from the bottle into contact with the roller when roller is pushed against the skin.
- It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a new and improved roll-on dispenser with an improved sealing arrangement.
- In a preferred embodiment of the invention there is provided a roll-on dispenser with a sealing arrangement which automatically opens upon removal of the overcap and automatically closes upon replacement of the overcap.
- In accordance with the present invention there is provided a liquid product dispenser which includes a liquid reservoir having a liquid outlet passage and a first valve member in the passage having a fixed relation to the reservoir. The dispenser further includes an applicator assembly which has a rotatable applicator roller mounted to a supporting housing. The housing includes a fluid passage for conducting fluid to the roller and an inlet passage mounted to the liquid outlet passage of the reservoir for receiving fluid therefrom and including a second valve member. The second valve member is moveable with respect to the first valve member to open and close the passage.
- Thus according to the invention there is provided a roll on fluid product dispenser comprising a bottle for containing fluid having a neck with an outlet opening, a first valve member attached to the outlet opening of the neck and in fixed position therewith, the first valve member including at least one outlet fluid passage, an applicator assembly comprising an elongate roller mounted to a housing member for rotation about its elongate axis, the housing member including a fluid passage communicating with the roller and having a fluid inlet mounted to the first valve member and having a second valve member in fixed relation to the housing member, the applicator assembly being movable between first and second positions on the first valve member to close and open the outlet fluid passage, and an overcap arranged to cover the applicator assembly, the overcap engaging the applicator assembly when applied thereto to move the applicator assembly to the first position and the overcap engaging the applicator assembly to move the applicator assembly to the second position when removed therefrom.
- In a preferred embodiment the second valve member is fixed with respect to the applicator assembly housing and the housing moves towards and away from the reservoir to close and open the passage. The movement towards and away from the reservoir may be activated by applying and removing an overcap.
- For a better understanding of the present invention, together with other and further objects, reference is made to the following description, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings and its scope will be pointed out in the appended claims.

- Figure 5B is a fragmentary view od part of Figure 5 on an enlarged scale;
- Figure 6 is a top view of the Figure 5 valve member.
- Figure 7 is a partially cross-sectioned side elevation view of the overcap of the Figure 1 dispenser; and
- Figure 7A is a fragmentary view of part of Figure 7 on an enlarged scale.
- A preferred embodiment of the presentation invention is shown in Figure 1, which shows a wide bodied roll-on dispenser including a
fluid bottle 12, afirst valve member 14, an applicator assembly comprising ahousing member 16 androller 18 mounted thereon and anovercap 20. - Bottle 12 is moulded of conventional flexible plastic material and includes a generally cylindrical or elliptical
lower portion 22 and anupper portion 24 which is extended in one longitudinal direction to conform to the elongated shape ofroller 18. Bottle 12 includes acylindrical neck 26 with acentral outlet passage 28 and exterior threads. -
First valve member 14 is screwed ontoneck 26 by itslower portion 30 which is provided with internal threads to mate to the threads onneck 26. The upper portion ofvalve member 14 includes acylindrical portion 32 and avalve plug 34, which are shown in greater details in Figures 5 and 6.Cylindrical portion 32 includes an outwardly facingrib 40 which is designed to interact with inwardly facing ribs which are provided onhousing members 16 as willbe further described. Valvemember member 34 is supported bystruts 36 which leave an open area betweenplug 34 andcylindrical member 32 for passage of fluid when the valve is open. - Figure 5B shows a modified edge for
valve plug 34 wherein there is provided an annular groove on the upper surface ofplug 34 and an outwardly facingridge 36. The combination ofgroove 35 andridge 36 provide flexibility of the edge ofplug 34 to provide a more effective sealing of the plug to the mating valve member, which has an inwardly facing conical surface as will be described. -
Housing member 16 is shown in cross-sectional views in Figures 3 and 4. As shown in Figure 3housing member 16 includes an upwardly facingsocket portion 42 having at its ends inwardly facingprojections 44 which can be received inbores 46 provided at either end ofelliptical roller 18, as shown in Figure 2, so thatroller 18 is free to rotate about its central elongated axis withinsocket portion 42. The base ofsocket portion 42 includes afluid inlet 46 which is provided with asecond valve member 48 having an inner conical shaped surface for receiving and engagingvalve plug 34 onvalve member 14. Surroundingvalve member 48 there is provided acylindrical portion 50 which has an inner cylindrical surface provided withridges Cylindrical portion 50 is of a size which is selected to receivecylindrical portion 32 ofvalve member 14 in close fitting relation.Ridge 40 oncylindrical portion 32 is designed to interact withridges cylindrical portion 50 such that whenhousing member 16 is mounted ontovalve member 14 and pressed downwardly thelower ridge 58 ofcylindrical portion 50 passes overridge 40 and thereby lockshousing member 16 ontovalve member 14.Ridges plug 34 andsecond valve member 48. Ridge 52 prevents excess downward movement ofcylindrical member 50 ontocylindrical member 32.Housing member 16 further includes ahousing skirt 60 which is arranged to surround a portion of the upper part ofbottle 12 to provide rotational stability tohousing 16 and also to aesthetically conceal the valve mechanism in the final package. - Those familiar with the art will recognise that the valve members can be interchanged so that
plug 34 may be onhousing 16 andconical valve surface 48 may be onvalve member 14. - Overcap 20 is shown in Figure 7 and includes an aesthetically designed cap to cover
roller 18 andhousing member 16. The cap is designed with an inwardly facingrib 62 at the longitudinal ends of its lower edge in the form of an arc which crosses the end of the oval opening.Ridge 62 is positioned so that as the upper portion ofovercap 20contacts roller 18ridge 62 locks beneathskirt 60 ofhousing member 16 as shown in Figure 1. - The invention as described provides a package assembly which facilitates filling the container and assembly of the package and which also provides a leak-proof packaging for the product which can be opened automatically and closed by removal and replacement of the overcap. In connection with filling of
bottle 12 fluid may be added to the interior of the bottle prior to the assembly ofvalve member 14 to the threadedneck 26 ofbottle 12. After the fluid filling,valve member 14 is screwed onto thebottle neck 12. Thereafterhousing member 16, which has previously been provided withroller 18 snapped into position overprojections 44 is applied to the valve member so thatcylindrical portion 50 slides down and overcylindrical portion 32 wherebyridges housing 16 ontovalve member 14. As the housing member is pushed to its lower most position wherebyridge 40 isadjacent ridge 52valve plug 34 moves into position within conicalsecond valve member 48 whereby the edges ofplug 34 seal against theconical surface 48 to seal the container closed. Overcap 20 is then applied to the package. When the package is to be used by a consumer the consumer will removeovercap 20 generally by grasping it along its longitudinal sides such that the longitudinalends having ridge 62 are moved slightly outward. The locking betweenridge 62 andhousing 16 will causehousing 16 to move in an upward direction as theovercap 20 is removed until stopped byridges member comprising plug 34 away from the second valve member comprisingconical surface 48 and thereby opening a passage from thefluid bottle 12 into thesocket portion 42 ofhousing member 16 whereby the fluid can be applied toroller 18. Continued upward pulling of theovercap 20 causesridges 62 to release from theskirt 60 ofhousing member 16 so that the overcap can be completely removed and the applicator is ready for use. - Upon completion of use the
overcap 20 is applied overroller 18 andhousing member 16 whereby the top ofovercap 20 engagesroller 18 and upon continued placement of the overcap onto thecontainer roller 18 pusheshousing member 16 downwardly thereby to close the valve formed byplug 34 andconical surface 48. Simultaneouslyridge 62 locks beneathskirt 60 ofhousing member 16 thereby to be prepared for opening the container upon subsequent removal of theovercap 20.
Claims (9)
- A roll-on fluid product dispenser, comprising:
a bottle (12) for containing fluid having a neck (26) with an outlet opening (28);
a first valve member (14) attached to the outlet opening (28) of the neck (26) and in fixed position therewith, the first valve member (14) including at least one outlet fluid passage;
an applicator assembly comprising an elongate roller (18) mounted to a housing member (16) for rotation about its elongate axis, the housing member (16) including a fluid passage communicating with the roller and having a fluid inlet (46) mounted to the first valve member (14) and having a second valve member (48) in fixed relation to the housing member, the applicator assembly being movable between first and second positions on the first valve member (14) to close and open the outlet fluid passage;
and an overcap (20) arranged to cover the applicator assembly, the overcap (20) engaging the applicator assembly when applied thereto to move the applicator assembly to the first position and the overcap (20) engaging the applicator assembly to move the applicator assembly to the second position when removed therefrom. - A dispenser as claimed in claim 1 wherein the bottle neck (26) is cylindrical and has external threads and wherein the first valve member (14) is screwed onto the threads.
- A dispenser as claimed in claim 1 wherein the first valve member (14) and the fluid inlet (46) have facing coaxially cylindrical surfaces to provide for relative axial movement between the first and second positions.
- A dispenser as claimed in claim 3 wherein the cylindrical surfaces are provided with ribs (40) for limiting the axial movement.
- A dispenser as claimed in claim 1 wherein one of the valve members comprises a plug (34) having at least one circumferential passage and the other of the valve members comprises a circular fluid passage arranged to be closed by the plug (34).
- A dispenser as claimed in claim 5 wherein one of the valve members has a conical sealing surface.
- A dispenser as claimed in claim 1 wherein the housing member includes a skirt member (60) surrounding the first and second valve members.
- A dispenser as claimed in claim 7 wherein the overcap (20) includes an oval rim surrounding the opening thereof and wherein the rim includes inwardly facing ribs (40) for engaging the skirt member (60).
- A dispenser as claimed in claim 7 wherein the ribs (40) are arranged at the elongate ends of the oval rim.
