Definitions
- the invention relates to a device for cleaning the exhaust gases of an internal combustion engine in operation with the features of the preamble of claim 1 (US-A-4,341,184).
- a cerium alloy which is introduced into the combustion chambers of an internal combustion engine during operation, reduces the pollutant emissions, in particular of HC, CO and NO x compounds, as well as fuel consumption and increases the specific output. If the cerium alloy is introduced into the combustion chamber in connection with water, the water splits catalytically into oxygen and hydrogen. The permanent presence of these two elements makes it possible to keep the air ratio during combustion constantly close to the lambda point, as a result of which the positive effects mentioned are achieved.
- the invention has for its object to provide a device of the type described in such a way that during operation of the internal combustion engine particles of an available alloy which is particularly effective for the purpose of exhaust gas purification can be introduced into the combustion chamber in a simple manner in a hot, oxidizing gas stream.
- the alloy used according to the invention is commercially available as a so-called “mixed metal” and is therefore available. This alloy has proven to be particularly effective in its effectiveness in exhaust gas cleaning.
- the US-A-3,717,129 teaches that a mixture of water and fuel is heated in heat exchange with exhaust gas and passed over a catalyst bed containing cerium and then introduced into the combustion chamber. In contrast, contact of the hot gas mixture and the catalytic element with fuel is avoided in the invention.
- the line communicates with the exhaust gas duct of the internal combustion engine, so that the exhaust gas of the internal combustion engine is driven by the excess pressure in the exhaust gas duct through the catalytic element.
- the water contained in the hot exhaust gas of the internal combustion engine and the residual oxygen also contained therein are sufficient to achieve the effect described above, in particular when the ambient air is moist.
- An improved effect in the sense of the invention one achieves an embodiment in which the line is communicated with the ambient air and a water reservoir for moistening it and is heated.
- the "artificially" heated and humidified air used as gas always provides sufficient oxygen to achieve the desired effect.
- the hot, moist gas passes the catalytic element containing the alloy body in order to detach from this particle and take it into the combustion chamber.
- the artificial heating of the ambient air can be brought about in that the line is led through the exhaust duct with at least one loop.
- the hot exhaust gases pushed out of the combustion chamber heat the ambient air in the line to the desired temperature without the need for a separate heating element.
- Heating in the heat exchange with a line section of the machine's cooling water circuit located at the cooling water outlet is also advantageous, because heating to the temperature between 80 ° C. and 100 ° C., which is particularly favorable with regard to the catalytic effect, can be achieved here.
- the ambient air can be introduced into the intake line under pressure by using suction or by using your own or an existing compressed air system (compressed air brake system, compressor, etc.).
- the device can be used both for Otto engines and for diesel engines.
- a gasoline or diesel engine 1 has an exhaust duct 2 with a subsequent exhaust pipe 3 and an intake duct 4 with an intake air filter 5.
- an intake pipe 6 of a line 10 opens into the exhaust pipe 3 for the removal of exhaust gas.
- the other end of the line 10 opens into the suction channel 4 via the nozzle 11.
- a catalytic element 7 in the form of a housing is inserted into the line 10, which contains a wire filter 8 and behind it a spring coil 9 made of a rare earth alloy containing cerium.
- the alloy is commercially available as a so-called mixed metal, which can be composed, for example, as follows: Total rare earth content ... min. 99.0% Fe ... Max. 0.5% Si ... Max. 0.4% Mg ... Max. 0.3% Al ... Max. 0.2% 100% rare earths contain: Ce ... about 50% La ... 20.0-26.0% Nd ... 15.0-19.0% Pr ... 5.0-6.0% other rare earths ... 2.0-5.0%
- the spiral made of cerium alloy has a mass of about 60 g, which is sufficient for a distance of 100,000 km.
- the excess pressure in the exhaust pipe drives part of the exhaust gas through the intake pipe 6 and the catalytic element 7 through the line 10 into the intake duct 4.
- the hot exhaust gas passes the spiral 9 from the cerium alloy tion, whereby the water and the residual oxygen in the exhaust gas oxidize the cerium alloy and take particles of it into the combustion chamber of the engine.
- the embodiment according to FIG. 2 differs from that according to FIG. 1 mainly in that instead of exhaust gas ambient air is used, which is filtered via an air filter 18 and passed on to a humidification chamber 17, which has a wick 20 with a reservoir 19 for with an antifreeze water 21 is in communication.
- the humidified air is heated via a line loop 14, 15, 16 laid through the exhaust pipe 3 and then, as described with reference to FIG. This also indicates a throttle device 12 in the flow direction before the line 10 is introduced into the intake duct 4.
- FIG. 3 An alternative for the moistening device is shown in FIG. 3.
- the air is moistened instead by a wick in that a dip tube 20 'for the additional air is inserted into the housing 19 to a point below the water level, so that the air rises again in the form of bubbles and via a tube 17' the room above the water level is drained again.
- the additional air is conveyed by the negative pressure in the intake duct 4.
- it can also be fed as compressed air into the filter 18, the ambient air being pressurized by a pressure source, such as a compressor or the like.
- the embodiment according to FIG. 4 differs from that according to FIG. 2 in that the throttle device 12 is followed by a mixture preparation system 13 which, however, lies in the flow direction before the line 10 is introduced into the intake duct 4.
- a nozzle 22 for generating a negative pressure of the intake air in the flow direction is arranged in front of (FIG. 5) or behind the air filter 5 (FIG. 6) instead of a throttle device.
- the line 10 opens in both cases at the point of the nozzle 22 where the air speed is greatest and thus the pressure is lowest.
- the water tank 19 can, for example, have a capacity of approximately 4 liters of water, which in the case of air humidification with wick 20 according to FIG. 2 can be sufficient for approximately 10,000 km of travel and in the case of FIG. 3 for approximately 5,000 km of travel.
- the device still works when there is no more water in the reservoir 19, but with reduced efficiency, which becomes worse as the humidity decreases.
- the embodiment according to FIG. 7 differs from that according to FIG. 2 in two respects.
- the main difference is that the line loop 14, 15, 16 of the line 10 passes through a hose 22 carrying a heated coolant or lubricant instead of through the exhaust pipe 3 (FIG. 2 ) is misplaced. If it is a hose 22 carrying cooling water of the machine, this is arranged in the cooling circuit of the machine according to the diagram in FIG. 8.
- 23 denotes a thermostat, 24 a cooler and 25 a cooling water pump.
- the hose 22 leads warm cooling water coming out of the machine, so that the line loop 14, 15, 16 is heated accordingly.
- the line loop could also be arranged in a similar manner in a lubricating oil circuit.
- FIG. 7 Another difference of the embodiment of FIG. 7 compared to that of FIG. 2 is that the space 17 'above the water level 21' of the reservoir 19 is connected to the humidification chamber 17, so that a larger humidification chamber is formed overall.
- the air line 18 coming from the air filter 18 ' opens directly into the room 17 ⁇ .
- water another oxidizing liquid or a liquid mixture can also be used.
- an acid, vinegar or alcohol can be used alone or mixed with water.
- a mixture of 96 water parts and 4 methanol parts or a mixture of 90 water parts and 10 alcohol parts is suitable.

Description
The invention relates to a device for cleaning the exhaust gases of an internal combustion engine in operation with the features of the preamble of claim 1 (US-A-4,341,184).
It is known that a cerium alloy, which is introduced into the combustion chambers of an internal combustion engine during operation, reduces the pollutant emissions, in particular of HC, CO and NO x compounds, as well as fuel consumption and increases the specific output.
The invention has for its object to provide a device of the type described in such a way that during operation of the internal combustion engine particles of an available alloy which is particularly effective for the purpose of exhaust gas purification can be introduced into the combustion chamber in a simple manner in a hot, oxidizing gas stream.
To achieve this object, the features of
Die US-A-4,341,184 schreibt für den Legierungskörper lediglich vor, daß er Cer oder Germanium enthalten oder gänzlich daraus bestehen soll.US-A-4,341,184 only prescribes for the alloy body that it should contain cerium or germanium or consist entirely thereof.
In contrast, the alloy used according to the invention is commercially available as a so-called “mixed metal” and is therefore available. This alloy has proven to be particularly effective in its effectiveness in exhaust gas cleaning.
While US-A-4,341,184 only uses water vapor as a hot, oxidizing gas, the inventors have recognized that either hot, humidified air or the exhaust gas from the machine is sufficient. This makes it unnecessary to carry along or refuel larger amounts of water and to provide a space-consuming water tank. An oxidizing liquid, e.g. Water, alcohol, vinegar, methanol or a mixture of the latter three liquids with water.
The US-A-3,717,129 teaches that a mixture of water and fuel is heated in heat exchange with exhaust gas and passed over a catalyst bed containing cerium and then introduced into the combustion chamber. In contrast, contact of the hot gas mixture and the catalytic element with fuel is avoided in the invention.
In a simple embodiment of the invention, the line communicates with the exhaust gas duct of the internal combustion engine, so that the exhaust gas of the internal combustion engine is driven by the excess pressure in the exhaust gas duct through the catalytic element. The water contained in the hot exhaust gas of the internal combustion engine and the residual oxygen also contained therein are sufficient to achieve the effect described above, in particular when the ambient air is moist. An improved effect in the sense of the invention However, one achieves an embodiment in which the line is communicated with the ambient air and a water reservoir for moistening it and is heated. The "artificially" heated and humidified air used as gas always provides sufficient oxygen to achieve the desired effect.
In both embodiments, the hot, moist gas passes the catalytic element containing the alloy body in order to detach from this particle and take it into the combustion chamber.
The artificial heating of the ambient air can be brought about in that the line is led through the exhaust duct with at least one loop. The hot exhaust gases pushed out of the combustion chamber heat the ambient air in the line to the desired temperature without the need for a separate heating element.
Heating in the heat exchange with a line section of the machine's cooling water circuit located at the cooling water outlet is also advantageous, because heating to the temperature between 80 ° C. and 100 ° C., which is particularly favorable with regard to the catalytic effect, can be achieved here.
The ambient air can be introduced into the intake line under pressure by using suction or by using your own or an existing compressed air system (compressed air brake system, compressor, etc.).
If there is no throttle device in the intake duct, a negative pressure for generating a suction effect is provided by the air nozzle then provided for the combustion air in the intake duct.
The device can be used both for Otto engines and for diesel engines.

The spiral made of cerium alloy has a mass of about 60 g, which is sufficient for a distance of 100,000 km.
In operation, the excess pressure in the exhaust pipe drives part of the exhaust gas through the
The embodiment according to FIG. 2 differs from that according to FIG. 1 mainly in that instead of exhaust gas ambient air is used, which is filtered via an
An alternative for the moistening device is shown in FIG. 3. The air is moistened instead by a wick in that a dip tube 20 'for the additional air is inserted into the
In the embodiments according to FIGS. 2 and 3, the additional air is conveyed by the negative pressure in the intake duct 4. However, it can also be fed as compressed air into the
This also applies to the modifications according to FIGS. 4 to 7.
The embodiment according to FIG. 4 differs from that according to FIG. 2 in that the
The
The device still works when there is no more water in the
The embodiment according to FIG. 7 differs from that according to FIG. 2 in two respects. The main difference is that the
In Fig. 8, 23 denotes a thermostat, 24 a cooler and 25 a cooling water pump. The
Experiments have shown that the best results, i.e. the greatest removal can be achieved by oxidizing the element 7 between 80 ° C and 100 ° C of the humidified hot air. Since the cooling water outlet temperature from the machine is 85 ° C., this type of heating of the humidified air ideally corresponds to the purposes of the invention.
Die vom Luftfilter 18 kommende Luftleitung 18′ mündet direkt in den Raum 17˝.Another difference of the embodiment of FIG. 7 compared to that of FIG. 2 is that the space 17 'above the water level 21' of the
Instead of water, another oxidizing liquid or a liquid mixture can also be used. For example, an acid, vinegar or alcohol can be used alone or mixed with water. In practice, a mixture of 96 water parts and 4 methanol parts or a mixture of 90 water parts and 10 alcohol parts is suitable.
