Abstract

The feed mechanism is for the glued points on a ribbon in a machine binding continuous bundles of tabulator print-outs, having a toothed ring (4) inserting the front part of each point (3) in a hole in the bundle margin (5), while a pair of rollers (6,6') feed the continuous bundles forward and secure the front part below the bottom printed sheet. A pair of rollers (14,14') on horizontal axes one above the other and parallel to the direction of movement of the sheets index the glued ribbon (16) forward from a storage roll (18), being driven by a ratchet mechanism (33,34,35) with cam (30). A head (21) rotates in a vertical plane above the margin holes, and has an eccentric knife (28) and a concentric surface (28') parting off the ribbon and retracting part of the binding. This works opposite a rubber-covered roller (39) lifting the sheets and is rotated in synchronism with movement of the latter and with the ribbon. The roller is also lifted in synchronism with rotation of the head.

Description

The present invention relates to a device for feeding stitches of glued tape for binding machines for continuous bundles of paper for tabulators.

It is known that the binding machines for tabular printing in continuous bundles known to date comprise, downstream of the device for feeding the binding points in the form of glued tape, a toothed or impression crown for the introduction of the anterior part of each binding point in a corresponding hole in the perforation provided on the edge of the various superimposed bundle prints and a pair of drive rolls for the bundle prints, the lower roller having the additional function of folding and fixing said portion front of the binding point on the bottom page of the printout below.

These known continuous bundle print binders also provide for feeding the stitches of glued tape perpendicular to the direction of movement of the bundle prints and removing the dots from a continuous ribbon of width equal to the length of the dots, at by means of a rectilinear blade with alternating vertical movement.

The particular structure, the operational cycle and the control means adopted in these known continuous bookbinding machines result in a strong limitation of the speed of the blade and the regular application of the stitches and therefore impose a serious limitation of the speed of movement of the multipart prints to be bound and thus of production.

It is also known from European Patent No. 054.009, a binding machine for continuous bundle prints in which the glued tape, which is fed in the direction of movement of the bundled prints and has a width equal to that of the dots, is incised and then torn to form the binding points by means of two opposing rotary pressers, one being associated with a punch and the other with a notch; but such a binding machine has the drawback of requiring the use of a glued tape which is not common in the trade.

The present invention aims to eliminate the drawbacks of the previous binding machines by providing a device for feeding the binding points which allows the use of a commercial glued tape and which allows, at the same time, a speed of power supply, precision and reliability of cutting points far better than those obtained to date.

This result has been achieved in accordance with the present invention by providing a device for feeding the stitches of glued tape comprising a pair of rollers for driving the glued tape in a direction perpendicular to that of displacement of the bundled prints to be bound and with displacement by intermittence obtained by means of a ratchet system associated with a cosmodronic cam, a vertically rotating head with at least one eccentric cutter and a corresponding presser to cut the glued tape by removing a binding point and thus to fix the part posterior of said point on the upper printed matter, in cooperation with an opposing roller which by lifting the printed matter in bundles generates a back pressure, means for obtaining the rotation of said head in syncronism with the displacement of printed matter in bundles to link means for obtaining the lifting of the back pressure roll in syncronism with c the rotation of the head.

Advantageously according to the invention. provision is made to guide the tape glued close to said rotating head by means of a funnel-shaped passage and the lower outlet edge of which acts as a counter blade when cutting the ribbon.

Furthermore, in accordance with the invention, provision is made to mount said back-pressure roller at the free end of a lever and to lift this the latter by means of a cam rotating in synchronism with said rotating head.

According to other characteristics the rotary head comprises two eccentric cutters, diametrically opposite and therefore the cosmodronic cam is profiled so as to generate two equal angular displacements of the pawl shaft in syncronism with each turn of said head and in the same way the cam which controls the lifting of the lever carrying the counter-pressure roller has two active eccentricities.

The solution proposed by the present invention allows the production of a high speed binding machine, easy to adjust and which also allows, with a simple modification of the head, to modify the pitch of the binding points.

With reference to FIGS. 1, 2 and 3 of the appended drawings and limited to its essential structure, the device according to the invention is intended for a binding machine 1 with dots of glued ribbon for printed continuous bundles of paper for tabulators, which comprises downstream of the feeder 2 of the binding points proper, a crazy toothed crown 4 for the introduction of the front part of each cut point 3 into a corresponding hole of the perforation provided on the margin of the superimposed bundle prints and a pair rolls 6,6 ′ turning in opposite directions and intended for the training of interposed bundle prints, the lower roller 6 ′ also providing for the fixing of said front part of each binding point to the bottom page of the printed matter located below.
With reference to FIG. 4 of the accompanying drawings, the roller 6 ′ takes its movement from a drive shaft 7 through a gear train comprising the toothed wheels 8 to 13 and having a transmission ratio equal to one.
The device 2 for feeding the stitches of adhesive tape proper comprises a pair of rollers 14,14 ′ rotating around axes parallel to the direction of movement of the bundled prints 5, for the movement of the glued tape 16 interposed with unwinding at from a coil 18 and the free end of which passes through a slot 29; a head 21 rotating vertically in the direction of movement of the prints 5 and in synchronism with the latter and the movement of which is obtained from the motor shaft 7 through another gear train having a transmission ratio equal to one and composed toothed wheels 8, 9 and 22 to 27. This head 21 is at an eccentricity and has a cutting angle 28 and a corresponding dorsal part 28 ′ with circular profile, concentric with the head; at each turn of said head the cutting edge 28 grazes the slit 29 by cutting out the portion of glued tape 16 which protrudes therefrom.
Said portion 3 of ribbon, which is a few mm (for example four) and defines the width of the binding point, is determined by the intermittent rotation of the roller 14 obtained by means of a ratchet wheel system with ratchet 33, 34.35 associated with a cosmodronic cam 30 and in which the sawtooth wheel 34 is mounted on the shaft 36 of the roller 14 and the balance 33, which is mounted idly on the shaft 36, carries on one side the pivot 32 engaged in track 31 of the cosmodronic cam 30 and on the other side, the pawl 35 which cooperates with the sawtooth wheel 34.
A lever 36, articulated at 36, is controlled to oscillate vertically and in synchronism with the head 21, by means of a cam 37 mounted on the shaft of the toothed wheel 22 so that the rubberized roller 39, mounted idly at the free end of the lever 36, lifts the printed forms in a bundle 5 towards and against the dorsal part 28 ′ of the head 21 providing the necessary back pressure for the front part of point 3 on the print above: the free end of said lever 36 is advantageously controlled by a return spring 40 in the rest position.

The operation of the binding machine for successive operations is that of any binding machine known to date and already described previously.
To obtain a binding pitch equal to half of the normal pitch (four inches), it suffices to exchange the head 21 at an eccentricity by a head with two eccentricities and thus with two cutting edges 28 and two corresponding pressers 28 ′, diametrically opposite to make two cuts of the glued tape, the feed of which is then modified by the substitution of the cosmodronic cam 30 with another cam, the groove 31 of which comprises two lifts so as to cause two corresponding rotations of the shaft 36 for each turn of the head, and the substitution of the cam 37 by another comprising two opposite lifting eccentricities 38 to allow the roller 39 to be lifted twice for each revolution.
