Abstract

Disposable cartridges for smaller photocopiers and laser printers often have, in addition to a new-toner container and a residual-toner container, further functionally important parts, such as photoconductor drums and loading and developer stations, the additional parts being of considerable importance for the price of the cartridge. The invention is based on the idea of making such disposable cartridges reusable. This is achieved by means of a method, according to which the toner containers of the disposable cartridges are subsequently provided with refilling and emptying orifices which can be closed by means of lids, adhesive strips or plugs. <IMAGE>

Description

The invention relates to a method for making reusable cartridges for photocopiers and laser printers, which are equipped with a photoconductor drum coated with an organic photoconductor and a charging and developer station, as well as with an inherently non-refillable neutron container and a non-emptying residual toner container.

Disposable cartridges that are not reusable after they have used up the new toner they contain, since they do not offer any options for refilling new toner and removing residual toner, are used to a not inconsiderable extent in connection with comparatively small copying machines and laser printers. Their use is based on the consideration of keeping the amount of the toner supplied in the toner container so small that there is almost certainly no need for maintenance of functionally important parts of the cartridge. In other words, the toner is running low before the failure of important parts of the cartridge can be expected. At first glance, the described method of operation has a lot to offer because it practically excludes the risk of device downtimes, for example because of a photoconductor drum that has become unusable, if a replacement cartridge is available. On closer inspection, however, the concept described turns out to be less convincing, because the exchange of a used cartridge with one defective part against a new cartridge is no less expensive than the corresponding exchange with a cartridge, the only defect of which is that its toner has been used up.

As a consequence of the above consideration, the invention is based on the object of showing a way which makes it possible to make disposable cartridges reusable with simple means. To achieve the object, it is proposed according to the invention that the new toner container is subsequently provided with a refill opening accessible from the outside of the cartridge and a lid serving to close this opening, and that emptying holes which can be closed by an adhesive strip or by plugs are incorporated in the residual toner container.

The method according to the invention opens up the possibility of reusing commercially available disposable cartridges and in this way not only reducing the copying or printing costs, but also making a contribution to environmental protection by reducing industrial waste. Experiences gained from experiments have shown that it is regularly possible to refill commercial disposable cartridges two or three times without problems, the proportion of toner costs in relation to the other cartridge costs being very low.

A cartridge that has been made reusable by the method according to the invention is described below with reference to the attached schematic drawing.

In the drawing, 1 is the housing of a cartridge for a copier or a laser printer, in which, in addition to a new toner container 2 and a waste toner container 9 at least one photoconductor drum coated with an organic photoconductor, a charging station and a developer station are accommodated. The top of the neutron container 2 is provided with a refill opening 3, which can be closed by a lid 4 with a handling tab 5. The lid 4 is preferably made of cardboard and is connected to the cartridge by means of an adhesive strip 6 forming a hinge. Adhesive strip sections 7 provided on both sides with an adhesive layer serve to lock the lid 4 in the closed position, in which the lid bears against a flat part 8 in the area of the ceiling or top of the neutron container 2.

The size of the refill opening can correspond to the respective circumstances, i.e. in particular depending on whether toner powder or toner cartridges are refilled.

In order to avoid undesirably large dimensions of the waste toner container 9 of the cartridge, the waste toner container is provided with emptying openings 10 which, in the illustrated case, are formed by a row of holes which can be closed by a removable adhesive strip 11.
