Abstract

A lid made of a laminar body having a perimetric skirt intended to fit over the flange which borders the opening of a container, has a light material plate incor­porated to its inwardly directed surface and formed with outer contour corresponding to the inner contour of the flange, and thickness corresponding to the thickness of the said flange, thus defining a channeled structure into which the edge of the container mouth is to fit.
In a preferred embodiment, the inner surfaces of the incorporated plate and the defined channel are provided with an impervious lining to improve tightness of the closure made between the lid and the container.

Description

  • The present invention relates to a lid for con­tainers, specially drums which are to be closed hermeti­cally to ensure preservation of their contents.
    • BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
  • The lids for containers made of cardboard, plas­tic or other materials, are usually made of a laminar material with an embossing protruding to the inside of the drum, extending over a major portion of the lid surface and with a contour corresponding to the contour of the container opening. The lid forms an inner channel about the said embossing and defining a short perimetric skirt, the container opening edge fitting in the channel when the lid is in its closing position. This construction does not provide the required sealing and stiffness, and it is on this ground that the lid making the subject of the inven­tion has been devised.
    • DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
  • The lid according to the invention is essen­tially featured by the fact that it has embodied on its inner face a light material plate the contour of which corresponds to the inner contour of the opening of the container to be closed, whereas its thickness corresponds, to advantage, to the thickness of the opening border, the total area of the lid being greater than the area of the incorporated plate, thus forming, together with the perimetric skirt of the lid, a channel wherein the flange of the container opening hermetically fits.
  • According to an optional embodiment, the exposed surface of the plate which is incorporated to the lid, as well as the exposed surface of the channel which is to receive the flange of the container opening are provided with an impervious lining.
    • BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
  • For a better understanding of the description in the present specification, a drawing is enclosed wherein a practical embodiment of the lid is shown only by way of example. In the said drawings:
    Figure 1 is a view in half cross section of the lid as in­corporated to the opening of a container, and
    Figure 2 shows a detail of the lid in enlarged diametral section.
    • DESCRIPTION OF A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
  • The described lid is formed, in the drawing, of a laminar body 1 the contour of which corresponds to the outer outline of the opening of a container 2 to be closed therewith, provided with a perimetric skirt 3. The inner face of the body 1 has incorporated thereto a plate 4 of a light material such as polyurethane foam or the like, the contour of which corresponds to the inner contour of the opening of the container 2, whereas its thickness cor­responds to about the thickness of the flange 5 formed in the said opening.
  • A channel 6 is defined between the edge of the plate 4 and the skirt 3 and is intended to receive the flange 5 of the container./
  • To advantage, the exposed face of the plate 4 and the bottom of channel 6 are provided with an imper­vious lining, thus imparting tightness to the closure made by the lid and allows this latter to be used wit con­tainers which are to hold liquid substances or demand such tightness in the container closure for its preservation.
  • It clearly appears from the above that the lid is of a simple construction and does not require the usual embossing to define the seat and fit onto the container opening. On the other hand, the use of the plate 4 confers to the lid some ability of pressure fitting which will be decisive in attaining the impervious closure of the con­tainer. The impervious lining 7 cooperates also in obtain­ing such closure.
  • It is obvious that the materials used in the manufacture of the several components of the lid will be independent of the invention, although the lid might be specially suitable to be manufactured starting from a cardboard of a suitable stiffness or other suitable material. The type of container which the lid is fitted to may be the drum made of cardboard or the like material, with the edge of its opening turned over itself to define a required reinforcement in view of giving a desired resistance to the said opening. The shapes and dimensions either of the lid or the container will also be indepen­dent of the invention and will be suited to the needs of every specific embodiment. Thus, all of the ancillary details which do not alter the essentials of the inven­tion, will be independent of this latter.

Claims (2)

1. Lid for containers, characterized in that the inner face of the lid has incorporated thereto a plate of a light material the contour of which corresponds to the inner contour of the opening of a container to be closed, whereas the thickness of the plate corresponds, to advantage, to the contour of the edge of the said opening, the total area of the lid being greater than the area of the incorporated plate, thus forming, together with the perimetric skirt of the lid, a channel in which the flange of the opening of the container is to hermetically fit.
2. Lid according to claim 1, characterized in that the exposed surface of the plate incorporated to the lid, as well as the surface of the channel to receive the flange of the container opening, are provided with an im­pervious lining.
