Abstract

Sabot projectiles, in particular arrow projectiles, should have the smallest possible twist so that they do not start to oscillate in the air (nutation). On the other hand, it is advantageous for the sabot to be detached from the projectile body at the muzzle of the weapon barrel if the sabot has a swirl. According to the invention, this aim is achieved in that the projectile body (10) is screwed into the sabot (19) and can rotate relative to the sabot (19), the thread (11, 20) having the direction of rotation of the tube twist and the size of the thread pitch angle (α) corresponds to the sliding friction angle (µ) between the projectile body (10) and the sabot (19).

Description

The invention relates to a sabot projectile, in particular an arrow projectile, comprising:

a projectile body, in particular arrow-shaped, with an external thread, in particular a saw thread,
a sabot, in particular made of light metal, with predetermined breaking points, cartridge grooves and an internal thread into which the projectile body can be screwed,
- A sabot jacket made of plastic with pipe guide sections and predetermined breaking points, and a hood made of plastic.

Diese Haltemittel bilden Rillen oder ein Gewinde mit Steigungswinkel α = 0°.In a known sabot projectile of this type (see DE-A-2924036), in particular an arrow projectile, the swirl of the sabot should be transmitted as completely as possible to the projectile body. The projectile body therefore has recesses as holding means, in which the sabot engages on the sabot for the purpose of transmitting the forces occurring between the sabot and projectile body via holding means designed as cams. These holding means form grooves or a thread with a lead angle α = 0 °.

However, it is also known to arrange a normal thread between the projectile body and the sabot (see in particular DE-A-2924036 and DE-A-1703507).

A disadvantage of these known arrow projectiles is that the stability of the projectile body, in particular an arrow-shaped projectile body, is no longer guaranteed in the event of a large swirl.

The object which is to be achieved with the present invention is to create a sabot projectile which remains completely stable in its trajectory and whose swirl is correspondingly small.

The projectile according to the invention, with which this object is achieved, is characterized in that the projectile body 10 is rotatably mounted in the sabot 19 and that the thread 11, 20 has the direction of rotation of the tubular twist and the size of the thread pitch angle α, the sliding friction angle μ between the projectile body 10 and Sabot 19 approximately corresponds.

The sabot projectile according to the invention has the following advantages:
  • a) A clean separation of the sabot from the projectile body is guaranteed, since the sabot receives the full swirl and, under the action of the centrifugal force, flies away radially as soon as the projectile leaves the weapon barrel.
  • b) The projectile body can be given any swirl, between 0 and the maximum swirl, which is the same size as the swirl of the sabot, ie the projectile body can be given the most favorable swirl for its stability during flight.
  • c) Propellant gas can be passed under the hood to detonate the hood when the projectile emerges from the gun barrel.

An embodiment of the sabot projectile according to the invention is described in detail below with reference to the accompanying drawing.

Es zeigt:

  • Fig.1 einen Längsschnitt durch das erfindungsgemässe Treibspiegelgeschoss,
  • Fig.2 eine perspektivische Darstellung des hinteren Geschosskörperabschnittes.
It shows:
  • 1 shows a longitudinal section through the sabot projectile according to the invention,
  • 2 shows a perspective view of the rear projectile body section.

This sabot bullet contains:
- An arrow-shaped projectile body 10, which is also referred to as a heavy metal core and which has a thread, preferably a saw thread 11, in the central section. This thread 11 has a pitch angle α, which is shown in the drawing and the meaning of which is explained below.
- A sleeve 12 on which six stabilizing wings 13 are attached. This sleeve 12 is placed on a pin 14 of the projectile body 10, which is located at the rear end of the projectile body. The pin 14 has grooves 15 into which the sleeve 1k is pressed, as a result of which it is fastened on the pin 14.
- A light set sleeve 16, with a light set 17, is located in the rear end of the sleeve 12.

A flange 18 prevents the light set sleeve 16 with the light set 17 from falling out of the sleeve 12.
- A sabot 19, which is also referred to as a sabot, which has an internal thread 20 and which is screwed onto the thread 11 of the projectile body 10. This sabot 19 has grooves 21 which form a labyrinth seal, the purpose of which is explained below.
- Two pins 22 which through radial holes in Sabot 19 project into corresponding blind holes on the projectile body 10 and secure the sabot 19 against rotation relative to the projectile body 10. These pins 22 are held by a cartridge case, not shown, and are radially displaced by the swirl, so that the projectile body 10 can already rotate in the weapon barrel, relative to the sabot 19, as explained further below.
- A sabot jacket 23 which surrounds the sabot 19 and which has two pipe guide sections 24 which penetrate into swirl grooves (not shown) of the weapon barrel and impart a swirl to the sabot projectile when fired. The sabot jacket 23 is preferably made of plastic.
- A hood 25 which is fastened to the sabot jacket 23 by a snap lock 26. This hood, which is closed at the front, is hollow and can be filled with propellant gas via the aforementioned labyrinth seal and a longitudinal groove 27 in such a way that it is torn open by the gas pressure when it exits the weapon barrel.
- An ogive 28 or a truncated cone, which is located at the front end of the projectile body 10 and protrudes into the hood 25 mentioned.

The sabot projectile described protrudes into a cartridge case, not shown. On the sabot 19, two so-called cartridge grooves 29 are provided, to which the cartridge case is attached with the cartridge case mouth.

The operation of the sabot projectile described is as follows:
The cartridge case mouth of the cartridge case, not shown, protrudes into the cartridge grooves 29 and prevents the sabot projectile from the Cartridge case can fall out. The two pins prevent the projectile body 10 from rotating in the sabot 19.

When the projectile is fired, the pins 22 move radially outward by centrifugal forces to such an extent that the projectile body 10 can rotate in the sabot 19, i.e. a rotational slip between the projectile body 10 and the sabot 19 is made possible.

The size of the pitch angle α on the saw thread 11 and the direction of rotation are selected such that the frictional forces between the projectile body 10 and the sabot 19 are not sufficient to transmit the swirl acceleration from the sabot 19 completely to the projectile body 10. It is thereby achieved that the projectile body 10 emerges from the weapon barrel with a smaller swirl or without swirl than the sabot 19.

The invention now consists in choosing the size of the pitch angle α such that the rotation of the projectile body 10 corresponds to the optimum speed for an arrow projectile in order to ensure a stable flight of the projectile body. With a large swirl, a stable flight on arrow projectiles is not guaranteed.

A lubricating varnish is preferably inserted between the external thread 11 of the projectile body 10 and the internal thread 20 of the sabot 19 to ensure a constant frictional force.

The pins 22 located in the sabot 19 are preferably supported on flats 31 on the projectile body 10 and do not protrude into blind holes in the projectile body 10, as described above. Because with such blind holes there is a risk that each pin 22 is jammed in this blind hole before being pushed out by the swirl. On the other hand, the flat 31 is able to move the pin 22 itself radially outwards as soon as the projectile body 10 moves relative to the sabot 19.

Instead of the six stabilizing wings 13 mentioned, only 2, 3 or 4 such wings 13 can also be present.
