Definitions

  • This invention relates to improved techniques for sealing packages and for allowing venting therefrom.
  • the invention relates to methods for sealing plastic bags used in certain types of winemaking processes, and to devices for allowing gas generated by the winemaking process to be released from the bags.
  • grapes may be placed in a sealed container under anaerobic conditions which allows the enzymatic action of the juices within the grapes to transform sugar into alcohol without the need for crushing the grapes or yeast.
  • winemakers have begun to use plastic bags to maintain the anaerobic environment required for this type of reaction.
  • a large bag is placed inside a stiff outer container, which supports the bag, and whole grapes are placed therein to a level that ensures that grapes are not crushed. Then the bag is purged with carbon dioxide and closed. During the fermentation process the grapes begin to give off carbon dioxide.
  • the bag is closed containing a quantity of dry ice or solid CO2 which vapourises to force the air out of the bag.
  • sealing means for the mouth of a flexible bag comprising a pair of closely spaced elongate arms positioned within an outer tubular member having a cylindrical wall having a longitudinally extending opening formed therein, the elongate arms being axially rotatable with respect to the tubular member, the elongate arms being arranged to engage opposite walls of the bag adjacent the mouth of the bag with the walls of the bag extending through the opening in the wall of the tubular member whereby rotation of the arms relative to the tubular member causes the walls of the bag to wrap around the arms to seal the mouth of the bag.
  • a pressure relief valve for use with a bag of flexible material comprising a core member tapered to a point at one end, a bore extending through the core member and a sleeve of flexible material closed at one end, the other end of the sleeve being a force fit onto the core member, the sleeve having a venting slit formed therein, wherein in use, the core member is pushed through the wall of the bag and the sleeve is pushed onto the pointed end to clamp the bag between the core member and the sleeve so that when the pressure within the bag exceeds the external pressure the slit deforms open to allow release of pressure and when the external pressure is greater than the pressure within the bag the walls of the slit are drawn into engagement to prevent entry of air.
  • a kit for use as fermentation apparatus comprising a bag of air-impervious flexible material having walls that define a mouth, sealing means for the mouth of the bag comprising a pair of closely spaced elongate arms arranged to engage opposite sides of the walls of the bag adjacent the mouth of the bag and an outer tubular member having a longitudinally extending opening and arranged to contain the arms for rotation relative thereto; and a pressure relief valve comprising a pointed core member having a bore extending therethrough, the core member being arranged to pierce the wall of the bag and a sleeve of flexible material closed at one end and being a press fit on the pointed end of the core member, the sleeve having a slit formed therein that allows release of excess pressure within the sleeve but prevents entry of air when the pressure within the sleeve is less than the external pressure.
  • the sealing means 1 comprises an elongate outer member 2, having an inner member 3 provided inside said outer member, and projecting from both sides thereof.
  • the outer member 2 comprises an elongate tube having a split section extending part or all the way along its length.
  • the outer member may be formed of a range of materials, although it is anticipated that a stiff material would be the most effective for the purposes of the invention. Thus, for example, a stiff plastics material or mild steel may be used.
  • Lever means 16 and 17 are provided at each end of the inner member to facilitate manual turning of the inner member with respect to the outer member.
  • the slit 4 in the outer tubular member and the opening 13 between the elongate arms of the inner member are aligned in the manner illustrated in Fig. 3, and the end of the bag or tube is pushed through the slit 4 into the elongate gap 13 formed between the elongate arms.
  • the inner member is then rotated two or three times with respect to the outer member, thereby causing the sides of the bag to be wrapped around the elongate arms, pushing the sides of the bag together and sealing them.
  • Venting means may be provided in the bag by way of the pressure relief valves shown in Figs. 4 to 6.
  • a pointed core member 40 which has means for allowing fluid flow therethrough. These means may comprise one or more openings 41 communicating with a passageway running longitudinally within the core member, and with an opening 42 provided at the base of the core member.
  • a flexible sleeve 45 which may be of any flexible impermeable material such as rubber or plastics has dimensions which allow the sleeve to fit snugly over the core 40 in sealed engagement therewith.
  • the sleeve is provided with means to seal off one of its ends in the form of a plug 46, and a slit 47, which will allow fluid to vent from its interior if the fluid is under sufficient pressure.
  • the slit 47 is formed by a fine cut into the wall of the sleeve 45 extending for about 1 inch or 25 mms. The cut defines abutting lips (not shown) formed by the wall of the sleeve. When the pressure within the sleeve exceeds the exterior pressure the lips expand outwardly and part effecting pressure relief. However should the pressure within the sleeve be less than the external air pressure the lips are drawn into firm engagement preventing entry of air.
  • the slit acts as a very simple yet effective one-way valve that prevents return of air into the sleeve
  • the venting means shown in Fig. 4 may be applied to a web of material by pushing the sharp point 49 of the core member through the web, so that the web is pierced at 51.
  • the core member is shaped in such a way that the web will tend to cling to the sides of the core member in the manner illustrated in Fig. 4.
  • the section of the web 51 which is clinging to the core member becomes trapped between the core member and the sleeve, thereby forming an effective seal between the two.
  • Fig. 5 and 6 illustrate a rather more sophisticated form of the venting means of Fig. 4.
  • the core 40 has similar openings 41 and 42 and terminates in a point 49 at one end and an enlarged annular flange 82 at the other end.
  • a necked groove 83 is provided in the core body spaced from the flange 82.
  • the sleeve 45 is similar to the sleeve of Fig. 4 and includes the slit 47. However the sleeve 45 is provided with a central bore 84 that tapers to increase in diameter towards one end 86.
  • the bore than joins a dished end flange 88 that presents a concave opening 87 to the exterior.
  • a small annular projection 89 is formed on the interior of the tapered bore 84 to co-operate with the groove 83 on the core 40.
  • the assembled venting means is shown in Fig. 6.
  • the point 49 pierces the plastic wall 51 and the core is pushed fully up adjacent the wall so that the wall 51 abuts the flange 82.
  • the sleeve is then pushed onto the projecting end of the core from the outside of the plastic wall 51.
  • the dished flange 88 is pushed firmly against the flange 82 and the air within the concave opening 87 expelled to cause the flange 88 to act as a suction pad against the flange 82 with the plastics web 51 clamped therebetween.
  • the location of the projection 89 in the groove 83 ensures positive location of the sleeve 45 on the core 40.
  • the slit 47 acts in a similar manner to the embodiment described with reference to Figs. 4 and 5.
  • the invention also embraces a kit for use as fermentation apparatus especially for the production of wine from a process known as carbonic maceration in which whole grapes complete fermentation in an anaerobic atmosphere within an air-impervious plastics bag.
  • the enzymes within each grape cause the fermentation and the grapes are not crushed until the enzymatic fermentation is complete.
  • Dry ice or solid CO2 is often used to purge the air from the bag.
  • the enzymatic action also produces CO2 which pressurizes the bag.
  • the kit comprises a plastics bag of air-impervious material having a mouth, means to seal the mouth of the bag shown in Figs. 1 to 3 and a pressure relief valve of the kind illustrated in either Fig. 4 or Figs. 5 and 6.
  • the sealing means provides a simple and effective means of sealing a shallow, large plastic bag that has a large mouth to allow entry of the grapes.
  • the pressure relief valve provides a very simple, cheap and effective means of activating a valve assembly anywhere on the bag to ensure release of excess gas pressure but prevent entry of air.
