Abstract
Description
- This invention concerns apparatus for treating machined objects. The machined objects are, for example, motor vehicle components and are subject to treatments such as sand blasting, washing and drying.
- Patent specification US-A 4 476 627 discloses a machine for automatically assembling equipment composed of parts at least some of which are arranged on a carrier. The machine includes a plurality of assembly stations, a set of conveyers and loading and unloading stations. At each assembly station there are two conveyers, a carrier loader having two sets of suspension pawls and a shiftable table arranged to move in the horizontal direction of movement of the carrier loader. When a carrier arrives on one of the conveyers at an assembly station, the carrier loader moves downwardly so that one set of pawls engages the carrier, lifts the carrier up and carries it towards the shiftable table. The carrier loader then moves downwardly so that the second set of pawls engages a second carrier supported by the shiftable table and then moves upwardly. The shiftable table then moves to a position underneath the first carrier, the carrier loader then moves downwardly and places the first carrier on the shiftable table, moves upwardly and carries the second carrier to the second conveyer, where it will place the second carrier on the second conveyer and pick up a third carrier from the first conveyer.
- Patent Specifications such as EP-A 0 022 307, EP-A 0 065 861 and ES-A 8 600 978 disclose apparatus for treating machined objects.
- Patent Application EP-A 0 110 525 in particular discloses apparatus which comprises a plurality of stations, there being a treatment chamber at at least one station, a transfer mechanism for transferring objects from one station to another, and means for carrying an object into and out from the treatment chamber and supporting the object whilst it is being treated, the carrying means and the treatment chamber being horizontally movable with respect to each other, and the carrying means and the transfer mechanism being vertically movable with respect to each other. The transfer mechanism is a walking beam mechanism adapted to carry the objects in one rectilinear horizontal direction. The treatment chamber is disposed to one side of the horizontal direction. On the other side is a robot with a horizontal arm and a clamp at the free end of the arm. In use of the apparatus, each object is picked up by the clamp from the transfer mechanism, raised vertically and inserted horizontally along the length of the arm into the chamber. The clamp can rotate about the horizontal axis of the arm.
- The present invention is characterised in that the carrying means comprises a cradle adapted to receive and support the object to be treated and the transfer mechanism is arranged to place the object in the cradle.
- The cradle may be arranged to execute a vertical movement with respect to the transfer mechanism, and the treatment chamber may be arranged to execute a horizontal movement with respect to the cradle.
- Preferably however, the transfer mechanism is arranged to have a horizontal direction of movement, a downward direction of movement after placing an object in the cradle for treatment and an upward direction of movement to collect an object from the cradle after treatment, the treatment chamber is disposed to one side of the horizontal direction of movement of the transfer mechanism, and the cradle is arranged to have a horizontal direction of movement cross-wise of the horizontal direction of movement of the transfer mechanism.
- An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, of which:
- Figure 1 is a perspective view of one treatment station of apparatus for treating machined objects;
- Figure 2 is a cross-section of the treatment station showing further parts of the apparatus;
- Figure 3 is part of a cross-section of another treatment station having rotary cradles;
- Figure 4 is a plan of part of a longitudinal section of a treatment station in which the housing has hinged walls;
- Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 3 but to an enlarged scale and in greater detail; and
- Figure 6 is a plan of apparatus having a plurality of treatment stations.
- Figure 1 shows a treatment station in apparatus for treating machined objects. The apparatus comprises a transfer mechanism, which includes
bars 6, for transferring the objects from one treatment station to another in a horizontal direction. Two box shapedhousings bars 6. Eachhousing cradles housings upstanding wall 3,cradle 2 being vertically aligned with thebars 6. Thewall 3 depends from acarriage 4 which is connected to a hydraulic piston andcylinder device 5. Thebars 6 of the transfer mechanism have a pre-determined forward stepping distance at the end of which the object to be treated is positioned inside one of thecradles bars 6 then move downwardly leaving the object supported by thecradle hydraulic cylinder 5 is activated to move thecarriage 4 and thus thecradles bars 6 and cause the respective cradle to carry the object into the treatment chamber of one of thehousings other cradle other cradle bars 6. Thebars 6 move upwardly to collect the other object, move forward the pre-determined distance to bring a third object into theother cradle hydraulic cylinder 5 bringing thecradles cradle respective housing vertical wall 3 closes the opening in the side of the housing. - The
boxes - Figure 2 shows that
box 7 is formed with hollow walls, through the interior of which circulates the washing liquid or the drying air. On the inside wall are mountednozzles 9 through which liquid or air is discharged, and a large aperturedtubular nozzle 10 is arranged extending inside the part to be washed, whilst the latter is in the box. -
Box 7 is furnished with a washing liquid intake through a four-wayautomatic valve 11, which is fed through aduct 12 coming from amain pump 13.Box 8 is fed through aduct 14 from thepump 13 through another four-way valve 15. One outlet of eachvalve sump 20 and the other is blind, that is, it does not have a outlet. -
Box 7 has anoutlet duct 16 for the used dirty liquid (or air, in the case of blowing), and asimilar duct 17 is arranged forbox 8. - The
liquid leaving ducts duct 19 to thetank 20, that collects and filters the used liquid. -
Boxes elastic joints 21, so thatvertical wall 3 can close tightly the chamber where thepart 22 to be washed is supported by thecradle 1. -
Vertical support wall 3 comprises a movable box and is formed by twoindependent chambers chamber 23 closes, and has a functional relation with, thebox 7 andchamber 24 closes, and has a functional relation with thebox 8. - On the other hand,
chamber 23 may be fed either directly frombox 7, at the same time as it closes the chamber, or else through an independent valve mounted on thecarriage 4. The same applies to thechamber 24; it may be fed bybox 8. - In addition, there is an
air extraction fan 25, which creates a vertical air current onwall 3 andtransfer mechanism 6, so that it collects the mist formed when the closed chamber ofbox ducts - Each
housing box acoustic insulation 26, so that the general noise inside the box is kept low and/or heat loss is minimised. - Figure 3 represents a construction in which, in use,
cradles 31 rotate in order to wash the part more thoroughly. These cradles rotate once they are insidebox 7, while the washing or blowing is carried out. When they are outsidebox 7, or at the moment of loading and unloading the part, they are in a vertical position.Vertical support wall 3 is in this case divided into two parts, each of which supports anindependent cradle 31. Each rotatingcradle 31 hashollow arms 32, which have the double function of supporting the part to be washed and at the same time channelling the washing liquid throughnozzles 33 similar to those arranged onbox 7. In order to feed liquid to both these arms, there is arotatable coupling 34 for eachrotary cradle 31. - Figure 4 represents
box 7 with itsside walls vertical hinges walls box 7. - Figure 5 shows in more detail the above-mentioned rotary mechanism of Figure 3.
Hollow support arms 32, withnozzles 33, are joined to therotary cradle 31, part of which extends intovertical support wall 3 and is joined togear ring 35. Thegear ring 25 is rotatable on aring 36 that is joined tocentral wall 37, which forms a part of the supportingwall 3. Betweenrotatable gear ring 35 and fixedring 36, there are balls orrollers 60, allowing precision rolling as with a bearing.Gear ring 35 is driven by apinion gear 38, that is rotatably driven by amotor 39, electric or hydraulic, mounted fixed and joined to thesupport wall 3. - The
rotary coupling 34 fixed to thewall 3, and inside which rotatescradle 31, hasradial ducts 40 through which passes the liquid or air feeding thehollow arms 32. The fluid enters therotary coupling 34 through aflexible tube 41. - The right side of Figure 5 is the same as the described and illustrated left side.
- Figure 6 shows the construction of a complete machine, with a washing station with two
housings 42, a blowing station with twohousings 43 with compressed air and multiple dryingstations 44 for treating several parts at the same time. In this case, acentral support wall 45 carried three pairs of cradles for placing three objects at the same time in the threestations 44 formed by thehousing 46 in which there are arranged blowingnozzles 47. Asimilar housing 48 is located on the other side. At the given moment shown, the cradles supported by thecentral support wall 45move parts parts stations 44 on the opposite side formed byhousing 48. -
Housings fan 55, according to the position ofautomatic flap valve 56, so that it only feeds the housing closed by thesupport wall 45. - The same as
wall 3 described above,support wall 45 is formed by two separate chambers.
