Description

The invention relates to a corona generating device for electrophotographic printing or copying devices, according to the preamble of claim 1.

Corona producing devices are used for electrophotographic printing or copying machines for a variety of purposes. E.g. for loading the photoconductor, for transferring a developed image to the continuous paper in the transfer printing station, for removing background particles from a developed latent electrostatic image and for cleaning the photoconductor drum by neutralizing the charge on the remaining toner particles.

As can be seen from US Pat. No. 2,856,533 or DE-OS 2,424,835, such corona generating devices generally consist of at least one wire-shaped electrode, the so-called corotron wire, which is surrounded by a shield.

Although these corona generating devices are capable of causing a uniform electrostatic charge on the surface provided, dust particles, toner particles or other particles can accumulate on or around the corotron wire and its shield and cause an uneven generation of the corona current along the length of the corotron wire. For this purpose it is known from DE-OS 24 24 835 to provide cleaning devices in corona generating devices.

Furthermore, it is common to hang a corotron wire extending over the entire length of an intermediate carrier (photoconductor drum) at fixed end points. When printing on paper sheets that are narrower than the photoconductor, the corotron wire stretched freely over the photoconductor drum in the transfer station contaminates and damages the coating of the photoconductor in the areas not covered by the paper.

The object of the invention is to design a corona-generating device of the type mentioned at the outset such that, on the one hand, the wire-shaped electrode can be easily replaced, and on the other hand, easy cleaning of the corona-generating device is possible.

Furthermore, the length of the wire-shaped electrode should be adjustable.

This object is achieved in a corona generating device of the type mentioned at the outset according to the characterizing part of the first claim.

Advantageous embodiments of the invention are characterized in the dependent claims.

By arranging a replaceable corotron wire cassette in a cassette holder of the device, in which the corotron wire is wound on a supply spool, the corotron wire can be easily changed over the cassette in the event of wear, without the wire having to be touched. In order on the one hand to pre-tension the wire-shaped upper electrode and on the other hand to be able to wind up a used electrode easily again, the supply spool in the corotron wire cassette is connected to a spring element which e.g. can be a coil spring.

In order to be able to adapt the length of the wire-shaped electrode to different paper widths, an electric motor-operated setting device is provided in the corona-producing device, which detects the end of the wire-shaped electrode on the cassette via a holding element and pulls it out of the cassette depending on the paper width to be processed .

In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the holding element can be part of a cleaning element e.g. of a scraper element that serves to clean the area of the corona-producing device that receives the wire-shaped electrode. For this purpose, a cleaning slide with the wire-shaped electrode suspended therein is moved back and forth from the corona-producing device via an electromotive device.

During this back and forth movement, the wire-shaped electrode is passed through a cleaning device in the form of two felt rings arranged in the corotron wire cassette. This makes it possible to clean the corotron wire as well as to adjust it to different lengths and to clean the receiving area of the corotron wire of the corona-producing device by means of a single electromotive device. The entire corona-producing device therefore appears particularly simple in terms of maintenance and operability, which overall increases the ease of servicing and operability of the electrophotographic printing or copying device.

A corona-generating device is provided in the transfer printing station of a printing device operating on the principle of electrophotography, as described, for example, in US Pat. No. 3,634,077. The corona-producing device extends along a photoconductor drum 10. It consists of a pivotable frame 11 with a guide channel 12 formed thereon for receiving a cleaning slide 13 which, with the help of a motorized device, consists of a geared motor 14 with an associated scanning device 15 can be moved via pulleys 16 in the guide channel 12. A rope 17 is tensioned over the rope pulleys 16, with one part being attached to the cleaning slide 13. A replaceable corotron wire cassette 18, which receives the wire-shaped electrode 19 (FIG. 2) of the corona-producing device, is latched on one side of the frame 11.

The corotron wire cassette consists of a plastic housing 20, of two half-shells that can be glued together. A supply coil 21 is rotatably fastened in the plastic housing 20 for receiving the wire-shaped electrode 19 consisting of tungsten wire of approximately 0.08 mm in diameter. The coil 21 has a lateral incision 22 via which the beginning of the tungsten wire is led out of the coil and via a screw 23 is fixed on the supply spool 21. Installed in the supply spool 21 is a spiral return spring 24, which is attached at one end 25 to the supply spool 21 and with its other end 26 via e.g. a clamping piece on an extension of the housing 20, which e.g. can also serve as a hub for receiving the axis of rotation of the supply spool 21. Below the supply spool 21, a deflection roller 27 for the wire-shaped electrode is rotatably attached to a corner of the plastic housing 20 of the corotron wire cassette. Two felt rings 28 are arranged on the deflection roller 27, between which the wire-shaped electrode (corotron wire) is passed.

In the lower part of the corotron wire cassette 18, guides 30 are provided in a recess 29 for receiving a coupling tab (hanging tab) 31. The coupling tab, which is firmly connected to the corotron wire via a fastening point 32, is guided freely in the guides 30 and has a receiving opening 33 for receiving a retaining element 34 of the cleaning slide 13, which is designed as a latching element. Furthermore, between the recess 29 and the part of the corotron wire cassette which receives the deflection roller 27 there is a cutout 35 which is penetrated by the corotron wire 19 for receiving a sliding contact 36 which contacts the corotron wire 19.

To control the movement of the cleaning slide 13 and thus to pull the corotron wire 19 out of the corotron wire cassette 18, a control device 37 is provided which is in operative connection with the scanning device 15 and the geared motor 14. The control device 37 contains an actual input device 38. This input device can e.g. consist of a rotary knob or a digital keyboard, via which the width of the paper to be processed is entered. Depending on the width of the paper to be entered, the wire-shaped electrode 19 is then pulled out of the corotron wire cassette 18. For this purpose, the desired width of the paper entered in a comparison device 39, and thus the pull-out length of the corotron wire 19 with the actual pull-out length of the corotron wire 19, and thus the position of the cleaning slide 13, derived from the scanning device 15, are compared with one another and thus the e.g. Geared motor 14 designed as a stepper motor. Instead of direct input via the input device 38, it is also possible to combine the input device 38 with the paper width adjustment device in such a way that corresponding signals are automatically fed to the input device 38 when the paper width is adjusted.

For the operation of such a corona generating device, a e.g. resilient cassette holder of the frame 11, the corotron wire cassette 18 inserted until it snaps into the cassette holder 40. The cleaning slide 13 is in the left stop position of FIG. 1. The retaining lug of the retaining element 34 engages in the receiving opening 33 of the coupling tab 31 of the corotron wire cassette 18. At the same time, the Corotron wire 19 is contacted via the sliding contact 36 and, if necessary, applied with the corresponding Corona voltage.

Corresponding to the paper width set via the control arrangement 37, the corotron wire 19 is then pulled out of the corotron wire cassette 18 by the cleaning slide 13 against the force of the return spring 24.

In a cleaning procedure that can be called up by the control device 37, the cleaning slide 13 is moved back and forth over the length of the guide channel for cleaning the corotron wire 19 and the guide channel 12 (transfer printing rail). During this back and forth movement, the corotron wire 19 is simultaneously cleaned by the two felt rings 28, between which the corotron wire 19 is moved. If the corotron wire 19 is used up and the corotron wire cassette 18 is to be replaced for this reason, the cleaning slide 13 is moved back into its rest position at the left stop of the guide channel 12. As a result, the corotron cassette 18 is unlocked and it can be removed from the cassette holder 14 in a simple manner for replacement.
