Description

The invention relates to a bayonet-type coupling, in particular for an electrical connector, a first hollow-cylindrical part being connected coaxially in a pressure-tight manner to a second hollow-cylindrical part, and in this connected state the first part having an axial extension is inserted into a correspondingly shaped axial recess in the second part and an annular seal is provided between two mutually opposing end faces of the two parts, and furthermore one of the two parts is provided with a shoulder and with an axially displaceable and rotatable connecting ring which overlaps the latter and has radially projecting cams on its inner surface which are used for the purpose of connecting of the two parts cooperate with suitably shaped and arranged projections of the other part.

Couplings of this type are used in various fields of technology and have the advantage that a tight connection of the two hollow cylindrical parts can be quickly established and also quickly released again. This property is important, for example, when connecting power and control cables to pressure-carrying valves and their drives, because such cables often have to be loosened and tightly connected during overhaul and inspection work. As a result of the inevitable play between the coupling parts, which increases continuously due to wear, the elastic ring seal is loaded unevenly on the circumference. This can lead to premature wear of the ring seal, so that - in the interest of safety - frequent seal changes are necessary, which increase the maintenance and operating costs.

It is therefore an object of the invention to uniformize the load on the elastic ring seal in a bayonet-type coupling of the type mentioned in a simple and inexpensive manner, in order to reduce the frequency of the seal changes and the associated costs.

This object is achieved according to the invention in that tensioning means acting between the connecting ring and one of the two parts are provided, which in the connected state bring about a relative movement of the part having the projections with respect to the part having the shoulder in the sense of a compression or a further compression of the ring seal. This design of the coupling makes it possible to carry out the tight connection of the two parts in two steps: first - after the two parts have been put together - a loose connection is produced by rotating the connecting ring, which may cause only a slight stress on the elastic ring seal, and only then is a firm, pressure-tight connection created with the aid of the tensioning means, the ring seal only being evenly loaded by axial forces. Accordingly, the clutch is released in reverse order in two steps. The step-by-step procedure gently stresses the ring seal, since rotating forces on the seal only occur when the connection is loose. The tensioning means with which a relatively large preload of the ring seal can be achieved also result in the following safety-promoting advantages for the coupling:
  • - a better seal in the area of the elastic ring seal,
  • - An increased strength of the connection by an increased pressing of the two hollow cylindrical parts against each other and
  • - An increased braking effect on the connecting ring, so that it can only be turned easily when the clamping devices are released.

The last-mentioned effect also turns the clutch into a safety clutch, with the appropriate design of its components practically precluding unintentional opening.

As a result of the easy rotation of the connecting ring in the case of released clamping means and the little effort involved in actuating the clamping means, the handling of the coupling according to the invention requires approximately the same amount of time as that of the conventional coupling, in which the connecting ring has to be rotated with greater effort.

A preferred embodiment of the invention is explained in more detail in the following description with reference to the drawing, which shows a coupling in axial section.

The coupling designated as a whole by 1 has a first hollow cylindrical part 2 and a second hollow cylindrical part 3, which are arranged coaxially to one another. The first part 2 is inserted with a shoulder 2 'in a corresponding recess 3' of the second part 3, an elastic ring seal 4 in the form of an O-ring being arranged between two opposing end faces 5 'and 6 of parts 2 and 3. The O-ring 4, which surrounds the extension 2 ', lies in an annular groove which is located at the transition from the extension 2' to a flange-like shoulder 5 of the first part 2. A connecting ring 7 surrounds the shoulder 5 of the first part 2 and the region of the second part 3 adjacent to the shoulder. The connecting ring 7 has at its end facing the part 3 three radially inwardly directed cams 12 in the form of riveted pins, each in engage one of three grooves 13 which run helically in the outer circumference of the second part 3, namely in the manner of a right-hand thread. The grooves 13 are open at the end face 6 and closed at the other end. They extend approximately over a third of the circumference of part 3. The closed end of the grooves 13 runs - in contrast to the rest of the course - a short distance at right angles to the coupling axis, so that the pins 12 assume a locking position at the closed end of the grooves.

A screw ring 8 is provided above the shoulder 5 between the first part 2 and the connecting ring 7 and is screwed with its external thread into an internal thread of the connecting ring 7. The lower surface of the screw ring 8 in the drawing is supported by an annular, formed from a corrugated elastic sheet metal spring 9 and a washer 10 on a shoulder surface 11, which is the surface of the shoulder 5 facing away from the second part 3. The screw ring 8 here forms the clamping means acting between the connecting ring 7 and the first part 2.

8' versehen. In order to facilitate the turning of the connecting ring 7 and the screw ring 8 by hand, both rings are provided with knurling 7 'and 8' on the outer circumference.

The projection 2 'has a narrow longitudinal groove 15, to which a rib 16 is suitably provided in the recess 3' in order to prevent the first and second parts 2 and 3 from rotating relative to one another.

Arranged within the first part 2 is a cable 17 containing signal lines, which is connected to a connector half 1 T, which is tightly fastened in the interior of the first part 2 and is made of plastic. Correspondingly, a cable 19 containing signal lines and the second connector half 19 'are attached in the second part 3. The connector pins are designated 18. When the extension 2 'is inserted, the two halves of the plug 17', 19 'are also electrically connected to one another.

The coupling 1 is connected as follows: the first part 2 is inserted with its shoulder into the recess 3 'of the second part 3, the rib 16 having to be aligned with the longitudinal groove 15, so that incorrect contacts are formed between the two halves 17 'and 19' of the plug is avoided. Thereafter, the connecting ring 7 is pressed slightly against the second part 3 and rotated until the pins 12 engage in the helical grooves 13 and engage at the closed end of the grooves. The screw ring 8 must be set so that in this locking position it presses the spring 9 only slightly against the washer 10, so that the O-ring 4 is loaded only slightly when the connecting ring 7 is turned. So far, the first connection step has been carried out, and there is only a loose connection state. In the second step, the screw ring 8 is turned by hand until it presses firmly on the spring 9 and further compresses the O-ring 4 via the washer 10 and the shoulder 5. The O-ring is loaded only when rotating the ring 8 in the axial direction and evenly over its circumference. Even in this loaded condition, the spring 9 protects the O-ring 4 against excessive stress caused by non-axial forces that act on the clutch 1. The coupling is now in its fixed connection state. The clutch 1 is released in the reverse order of the steps described above.

In the tightly closed state, the relatively large axial load on the thread flanks of the screw ring 8 and the connecting ring 7, as well as on the shoulder surface 11 and the contact surface between the pins 12 and the grooves 13, causes substantial braking frictional forces to occur, so that the connecting ring rotates unintentionally 7 is practically excluded. Only after loosening the screw ring 8 can the ring 7 be loosened again.

In the exemplary embodiment described, the wall sections of part 3 which have remained between the grooves 13 form the projections which cooperate with the cams 12. These projections and the cams could, however, also be designed such that when the loose connection is established, they are first only moved axially against one another, moving past one another, and only then is the connecting ring rotated, so that the cams - in the axial direction of the coupling seen - come to lie behind the projections. It is possible that the ring seal is still practically unloaded in this loose connection state. Then, in the second connection step, the ring seal is pressed together using the screw ring.

The ring seal 4 can - instead of between the end faces 5 'and 6' - be arranged between the two halves 17 'and 19' of the plug, wherein the diameter of the shoulder 5 can be reduced somewhat. Instead of the screw ring 8, a lever system known from snap locks can be used as the clamping means. Instead of between the connecting ring 7 and the first part 2, the clamping means can also engage between the said ring and the second part.
