Description

TITLE SECURITY ANCHORING DEVICE
DESCRIPTION
The present invention relates to security apparatus.
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
In general, portable articles, particularly portable articles such as televisions and video cassette recorders and the like, are prone to theft. Such an article, by virtue of its portability can be removed, by a thief, from its stored location in a very short period of time. Thus, it is necessary to apply immobilization means to such portable articles to reduce the ease with which they can be stolen.
In the past immobilization means have comprised anchoring a portable article by bolts or the like to a relatively non-portable article such as a bench or a table. However, such immobilization means renders the article effectively non-portable. Further immobilization means have comprised chains or the like looped through handle means and the like of portable articles. Such chains may be locked to a relatively non-portable article such as a shelf. The portable articles may then be removed by un¬ locking the chain.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The security apparatus of the present invention is intended, in use, as a means to secure a portable article such as a domestic appliance, to arelatively non-portable article such as a bench or the like or to a fixture such as a wall or the like. Thus the secured portable article may less easily be removed by a thief and as such pose a deterrentto theft.
In accordance with the present invention there is provided a security apparatus characterised in that it comprises a mounting means, an elongated member having a first en 'and a second end, the first end being fixed to the mounting means, and a lock means, the lock means being arranged to be detachably fixed to the elongated member, the apparatus being further arranged, in use, to be* secured to a fixture and to a portable article so as to reversiblysecure the portable article-
For the purposesof the present invention a fixture shall include a fixture such as a wall or a floor or the like and a relatively non-portable article such as a bench or shelf or table or the like. A non-portable article is an article which is relatively bulky or heavy or immoveable and is thus not readily portable by an unaided person. Also, for the purposes of the present invention, a portable article is an article which is readily portable by an unaided person. For example, a television and a video cassette recorder are portable articles for the purposes of the present invention.

The present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:-

DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
In Figures la and 5 there is shown a security apparatus comprising a mounting means 10 having a. bracket 12 and a fascia 14.
The bracket 12 comprises a plurality of holes 16 and a central recess 18. The holes 16 are intended, in use. to receive fastener means such as securing bolts or the like, to secure the mounting means 10 to a fixture, such as a wall or a floor, or to a relatively non-portable article such as a bench or shelf or table or the like. It is envisaged that the fastener means could be security type bolts, that is, securing bolts that may be operated only with a tool intended for such a purpose.
Furthermore, the securing bolts will, in use, be received by the apertures 16 and threadedly engaged with masonary anchors or the like, fastened to or in the fixture or non-portable article. As shown in Figure 5 the fastener means may be security screws 19 having a head provided only with means to allowa conventionalscrew driver to tighten the security screws 19.
The recess 18 is arranged to receive an end block 20 fixed to an elongated member 22. The elongated member is arranged to be disposed in a hole 23 of the bracket 12, as shown in Figures la and 5. The end block 20 is fixed to an end of the elongated member 22, such as by crimping or welding or the like.
Thus, the end block 20 and the elongated member 22 are rotatably secured in thebracket 12. The fascia 14 of the securing means 10 comprises a hole 24. The hole 24 is located to correspond with the hole 23 of the bracket 12, and preferably is of similar radial dimension. Therefore, the elongated member 22 is arranged to pass from the recess 18, through the hole 23 and through the fascia* 14 by the hole 24. The fascia comprises holes 26a arranged to correspond with internally threaded holes 26b located in the bracket 12. The holes 26a and 26b are intended to receive bolts 26σ. The bolts 26c threadedly engage with respective holes 26b to removably secure the fascia 14 about the bracket 12, as shown in Figures la and 5. The fascia 14 is intended to provide a cover for the bracket 12 and to obscure the security screws 19.
It is envisaged that the fascia 14 could be lockably secured to the bracket 12, in which case security type bolts or screws need not be used to secure the bracket 12 to the fixture. The elongated member 22 is preferably of a flexible type, such as a flexible metal stranded cable, although it is understood that, a rigid member or a chain link member could be used. The apparatus of .the present invention also comprises a lock means, shown in the drawings. The lock means comprises a first lock portion 30 and a second lock portion 32.
The first lock portion 30 comprises a hasp 34. The first lock portion 30 is fixed to a free end of the elongated member 22 remote from the bracket 12 and the end block 20, such as by crimping or welding or riveting or the like.
The second lock portion 32 comprises a recess 36 arranged, in use, to receive the hasp 34. The second lock portion 32 also comprises holes 38 arranged to receive a fixing means such as bolts or the like to secure the second lock portion 32 to a lock mounting means. The lock mounting means may be a bracket 40 as shown in Figure 6 and comprising holes 42 arranged to correspond with the holes 38 in the second lock portion 32.
The bracket 40 also comprises elongated longitudinal slots 44. The slots 44 are arranged to receive fixing means such as bolts or rivets or the like to secure the bracket 40, and thus the second lock portion 32 to a portable article, as shown in Figure 3.
It has been found that adhesive or double sided adhesive tape can be used to fix. the bracket 40 to a portable article. Alternatively, the second lock portion 32 may be, in use, mounted directly to a portable article such as by bolting or the like.
In use, the securing apparatus, of the present invention is arranged to reversibly and lockably secure a portable article, such as a domestic appliance, for example a video cassette recorder, or the like to a fixture such as an interior wall of a building or a floor or the like. In particular the end block 20 is fixed to the elongated member 22 and arranged in the recess 18 of the mounting means 10. The elongated member is arranged through the holes 23 and 24. The mounting means 10 is fixed to a fixture by the security screws 19 or the like as described hereinabove. The fascia 14 is secured to the bracket 12 by the bolts 26c passed into the body 26a and threadedly engaged with the holes 26b. It is envisaged that a protective and decorative cap means 52 could be arranged to hide the bolts 26c. Such a cap means is described in Australian Patent No. 487752.
A plastics material tube 54,_as shown in Figure 5, may be slipped onto the elongated member 22 to disguise the same. The first lock portion: 30 is fixed to the free end of the elongated member 22 and arranged to lockably connect with the second lock portion 32. The second lock portion 32 is fixed to the bracket 40 and the bracket fixed to a portable article. Thus, in the security apparatus in the present embodiment the mounting means is fixed to a fixture, the second lock means is fixed to a portable article by the bracket 40 and the elongated member arranged to lockably connect the mounting means and the second lock portion 32 together. The loop means 50 may be fixed to the bracket
40 in similar manner to the second lock portion. The loop means 50 may be fixed to the portable article or to the fixture to provide an intermediate fixture means. The intermediate fixture means allows the mounting means 10 and second lock portion 32 to be located other than with one fixed to a portable article and the other fixed to a fixture. It is envisaged that a portable article could be reversibly and lockably secured to a non-portable article or fixture by any one of or any combination df the embodiments described hereinafter. In one embodiment of the security apparatus of the present invention the mounting means 10 is fixed to a non-portable article or a fixture; the bracket 40 and the second lock portion 32 are fixed to a portable article as described hereinabove *. and the elongated member is rotatably mounted in the mounting means 10 and arranged to lockably connect with the second lock portion 32.
In a further embodiment the mounting means 10 is fixed to a portable article; the second lock portion 32 fixed to a non-portable article or to a fixture and the elongated member is rotatably mounted in the mounting means 10 and is arranged to lockably connect with the second lock portion 32. In a still further embodiment a loop means 50, shown in Figure 4, is provided to be secured to a portable article by the bracket 40, in similar manner to the second lock portion 32. The loop means 50 is arranged to allow the elongated member 22 to pass, in use, between it and the portable article. The mounting means 10 is then fixed to a fixture or to a further portable article or the like and the second lock means 32 fixed to the mounting means 10 or to. a fixture or to a further portable article in order to lockably secure the portable article to the fixture. In a still further embodiment the loop means 50 is fixed to a fixture.
Preferably, at least one of the mounting means 10, the second lock portion 32 and the loop means 50 is fixed to a non-portable article or to a fixture.
Further, preferably at least one of the mounting means 10, the second lock portion 32 and the loop means 50 is fixed to a portable article such that the component fixed to the portable article is not that which is fixed to the non-portable article or the fixture.
It is envisaged that at least one of the mounting means 10, the second lock portion 32 and the loop means 50 could be fixed to a further portable article such that a plurality of portable articles may be locked together by the elongated member 22 and to a non-portable article or a fixture. Preferably, the second lock means 32 is a key operated lock arranged to receive the loop 34 of the first lock portion 30. The elongated member 22 and thus the portable article may thus be unlocked by operating the key in known manner. Modifications and variations such as would be apparent to a skilled addressee are deemed within the scope of the present invention. For example, the lock could be other than key operated, such as a combination lock.

Claims

1. A security apparatus characterised in that it comprises a mounting means, an elongated member having a first end and a second end, the first end being fixed to the mounting means, and a lock means, the lock means being arranged to be detachably fixed to the"elongatedmember „ the apparatus being further arranged, in use,to be secured to a fixture and to a portable article so as to reversibly secure the portable article.
2. A security apparatus according to claim 1, characterised in that the elongated member is flexible.
3. A security apparatus according to claim 1 or 2, characterised in that the lock means comprises a first lock portion attached to the second end of the elongated member and a second lock portion, the first lock portion and the second lock portion being arranged to be reversibly locked together.
4. A security apparatus according to any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that the mounting means is arranged to be secured to a fixture and the second lock portion is arranged to be fixed to a portable article.
5. A security apparatus according to any one of claims 1 to 3, characterised in that the mounting means is arranged to be fixed to a portable article and the second lock portion is arranged to be secured to a fixture.
6. A security apparatus according to any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that there is provided a loop means arranged to be attached to the portable article or the fixture and, in use, to have the elongated member passed through it such that the mounting means and the lock means when inter¬ connected by the elongated member passed through the loop means secure the portable article.
7. A security apparatus according to any one of the preceding claims, characterised inthat bracket means is arranged, in use, to be fixed to the portable article to provide in use an attachment point for the second lock portion and/or the mounting means.
