Abstract

To prolong the dormancy of plants or parts of plants, the plants or parts of plants in question are treated with an aqueous cyanamide solution before the point in time when they are expected to germinate. This allows the prolonging of the dormancy phase to be controlled in a targeted manner, simple handling and high rentability.

Description

The subject of the present application is a method for lengthening the dormant of plants or parts of plants and a safe and problem-free method for preventing late frost damage in plants.

As is known, the development of plants takes place in different, clearly distinguishable sections, such as B. the germination of seeds, the sprouting of perennial plants, the formation of leaves and flowers or the formation of fruits and seeds. This development process is genetically determined and is therefore influenced by internal, so-called endogenous growth factors.

B. Licht, Temperatur, Luft, Wasser undHowever, these endogenous growth factors are related to external d. H. exogenous growth factors such as B. light, temperature, air, water and

Actively growing plants are sensitive to unfavorable external growth factors such as B. Frost, heat or insufficient water supply. To preserve the species, the plant protects itself from such fatal external conditions by the fact that the parts of the plant necessary for the survival of the plant, such as. B. seeds, rhizomes, tubers or buds in a state of rest, the so-called dormancy. At this stage of dormancy, the plant shows no externally visible growth, i.e. H. no sensitive plant parts are formed, which can be damaged by the unfavorable external conditions.

The beginning and end and thus the duration of the dormancy period are essentially determined by environmental factors such as B. controlled light and temperature.

The extension of the dormancy offers decisive advantages for practical plant cultivation, especially fruit and wine growing. These advantages are particularly important in climatic conditions where frost can still be expected after active growth begins. These late frosts, which do not occur regularly and with the same intensity each year, damage fruit trees or vines that have already been driven out, which is always associated with considerable crop loss.

There has been no lack of attempts to prevent this late frost damage (cf. R. I. Weaver: Grape Growing, pages 47 to 55, publisher John Wiley & Sons, New York, 1976). These prior art methods include so-called "frost irrigation", the influence of cold air layers by wind blowers or the direct heating of the orchards. All of these measures, which are aimed at protecting buds and leaves that have already sprouted, are either only of limited effectiveness or uneconomical because of the high energy costs.

R. I. Weaver: Plant Growth Substances in Agriculture, Seite 166-167 Verlag W.H. Freemanh & Co., 1972). Attempts have therefore been made to prevent late frontal damage by prolonging the insensitive dormancy phase with the help of plant hormones (cf. R.I. Weaver: Plant Growth Substances in Agriculture, page 166-167, publisher W.H. Freemanh & Co., 1972). For example, tests with natural plant hormones such as gibberellin or abscisin or synthetic growth inhibitors such as chlorcholine chloride have been carried out, but have so far not been successful.

The invention is therefore based on the object of developing a method for prolonging the dormancy of plants or parts of plants which does not have the disadvantages of the prior art mentioned, but instead enables an effective prolongation of the dormancy phase despite uncomplicated handling.

This object is achieved according to the invention by treating the corresponding plants or parts of plants with an aqueous cyanamide solution before they are expected to sprout. Surprisingly, it has been shown that the process according to the invention enables the dormancy phase to be lengthened considerably. This was so surprising because, according to the prior art according to DE-OS 31 50 404, the cyanamide solution has exactly the opposite effect, namely the breaking of the bud form. This can only be explained by the fact that the timing of the treatment is important.

In the method according to the present invention, the cyanamide solution is sprayed onto the plants or plant parts to be treated, such as e.g. B. buds, rhizomes, bulbs, onions, rhizomes applied. The optimal treatment date is about 4 weeks to immediately, ie about 1 day before the expected budding, whereby the time of the treatment has a decisive influence on the prolongation of the dormancy. The later the treatment takes place, ie the shorter the time period between treatment and expected shoot-out, the longer the delay in the shoot-out. In the best case, the dormancy can be extended up to 14 days. Man With the aid of the method according to the invention, it is therefore not only in hand to generally prolong the dormancy, but one can also control the length of time of the prolongation by the time of treatment.

The aqueous cyanamide solution expediently has a concentration of about 0.05 to about 10% by weight, preferably of about 1 to about 3% by weight. The cyanamide solution can be applied with the usual spraying equipment and thus has the advantage of a problem-free and easy to dose application.

The amount of the cyanamide solution used is preferably such that complete wetting of the plants or parts of plants to be treated occurs. If necessary, wetting agents, in particular alkylaryl polyglycol ethers such as. B. "Citowett" R can be added, which are advantageously used in an amount of about 0.1 to about 1 wt .-%, based on the cyanamide solution.

The method according to the invention is suitable in principle for treating all plants, in particular fruit trees and grapevines.

The main advantages of this process are the targeted control of the prolongation of the dormancy phase, simple handling and high cost-effectiveness, since cyanamide is a cheap chemical. These advantages are the essential prerequisite for a safe and economical method of preventing or largely avoiding crop failures due to late frosts.

The following examples are intended to explain the invention in more detail, but without restricting it thereto.

B e i s p i e 1 1Example: 1 1

Figure imgb0001
The "Novling" grape variety is known in the southern Baden wine-growing region for poor budding. In addition, late frosts often occur there, which can lead to considerable damage after sprouting. After practical experience, the shoot was expected around May 10 in the trial year. The cyanamide solution according to the invention was sprayed in a concentration of 2.5% by weight on April 24, that is only 15 days before the expected expulsion. The delay in sprouting was about 10 days, as can be seen from Table 1.

B e i s p i e 1 2Example: 1 2

The Aconcagua Valley in South America is a relatively new wine-growing region. At the time of normal bud budding there are relatively strongly fluctuating day / night temperatures. While the midday temperature can rise to over 20 ° C, it is possible that temperatures in the area of freezing point occur during the night.

Figure imgb0002
With the most important grape variety Thompson Seedless, attempts were made to extend the dormancy period. An aqueous solution of the active ingredient cyanamide in a concentration of 2.5% by weight was injected at several times. The normal budding expected from practical experience should take place on August 28th. As a result, the treatment dates were set 15 to 0 days before the expected sprouting and perceived accordingly. In fact, the first signs of bud budding, ie swelling of the buds and the appearance of the hair of the first leaves (cotton stage) were observed on August 28th. This means that at the latest application date, the active ingredient cyanamide was injected immediately at the end of the dormancy period. As can be seen from Table 2, the late application resulted in a 10-day prolongation of the dormancy.
