Abstract
The main patent relates to a transversely excited gas laser, the main discharge of which is initiated by a corona discharge ignited between auxiliary electrodes. The auxiliary electrodes each consist of a conductor which is encased by a dielectric; the sleeves of a pair of electrodes can also be combined into a single part. The invention is based on this form of envelope and proposes to provide the sheath between the two conductors on its side facing the main discharge gap (inside) with an incision parallel to the longitudinal axis and also to metallize it on its outside. The incision ensures that the UV light from the corona discharge preferably reaches the area of the main discharge path and thus generates free electrons wherever they are most effective. The outer metallization increases the capacity of the auxiliary electrode arrangement; this increases the corona discharge and possibly also delays the main discharge in such a way that the breakdown occurs in a more ionized gas. As a result, the laser becomes more independent of changes in high voltage, gas pressure and gas composition. Main area of application: sealed-off CO2 laser for mobile use.
Description
The invention relates to a gas laser according to the preamble of claim 1. Such a TE laser belongs to the subject of the older, not yet published patent application P 33 13811.7.
In the laser type of the cited application, the main charge is prepared by a free corona discharge generated between auxiliary discharges. The auxiliary electrodes each consist of a conductor covered by a dielectric, and the sheaths of several conductors can also be combined to form a common carrier. Such an electrode system can be produced and assembled efficiently, is relatively independent of the configuration of the main electrodes and, last but not least, also offers the possibility of varying the high voltage, the gas pressure and the gas composition within certain limits. This enables a "sealed-off" operation, in which, as is known, the partial pressures of the gas mixture and consequently the required high voltage change over time.
Quant. Elec. 15 (1981) 251). Bei der vorliegenden Laseranordnung bringt die Verwendung eines Les 1 Lk/11.10.1984In order to further increase the tolerance to parameter fluctuations and thus also the life expectancy in sealed-off operation, one could think of connecting a so-called "peaking capacitor" parallel to the main discharge path. If dimensioned correctly, this capacitor can significantly improve the stability and homogeneity of the main discharge in many cases (cf. Opt. Quant. Elec. 15 (1981) 251). In the present laser arrangement, the use of a Les 1 Lk / 11.10.1984
Quant. Elec. 15(1983)185 berichtet wird, sind noch nicht klar. However, as experiments have shown, "peaking capacitors" show no improvements. The reasons for this behavior, of which also in Opt. Quant. Elec. 15 (1983) 185 is not yet clear.
The invention is based on the object of designing a laser of the type mentioned at the outset in such a way that it can be operated over a long period of time with a closed gas volume and in particular also tolerates relatively large high-voltage fluctuations. This object is achieved by a laser with the features of claim 1.
The proposed constriction in the auxiliary electrode jacket gives the corona discharge a form in which the UV light is preferably emitted into the space between the main electrodes. In this way, the degree of ionization of the gas is particularly high where the presence of free electrons is most effective. It has been found that this simple measure significantly improves the functionality of the laser.
The situation becomes even more favorable if the capacity of the auxiliary electrode arrangement is additionally correctly set. The optimal value is usually somewhat larger than the capacitance that is formed by the dielectric-coated conductors themselves. Accordingly, the dielectric sheath will normally also be metallized on its outside, in places where the metallization only increases the capacity and is not included in a discharge.
With optimized auxiliary electrode capacities, for example, a C0 2 laser tolerates high-voltage changes of up to ± 15% without further notice. There is still no satisfactory explanation for this remarkable phenomenon. It cannot be ruled out that mechanisms similar to the "peaking capa citor "play a role; however, the cheapest capacity values in both cases are usually more than an order of magnitude apart.
Further advantageous refinements and developments of the invention are the subject of additional claims.

Further manufacturing and operational details emerge from the main application.
