Abstract

A method is provided for directly casting molten metal (19) from a U-shaped structure of the exit end (26) of a casting vessel (18) onto a moving casting surface (20) to form a continuous strip (15) of crystalline material. The method includes providing a non-oxidizing atmosphere in a zone defined above the molten metal (19), across the width of the U-shaped structure and adjacent the casting surface (20). An apparatus is also provided.
