Definitions
- the present invention essentially relates to the drilling of a well through an area of land with loss of circulation.
- this tool In the drilling of a well by a drilling tool mounted at the lower end of a drilling string used to apply a weight to this tool and to drive it in rotation, this tool receives by the bore of this stringing a drilling fluid whose role is at the same time to cool this tool, to clean the working face and to raise the cuttings to the surface by the annular space included between well and drilling rig.
- This role of the drilling fluid is no longer adequately fulfilled if the well passes through an area with loss of circulation because the flow of the drilling fluid must then be reduced and the return to the surface of the circulation of the drilling fluid is poorly or not is not done at all. This results in a slowing down of the drilling operations and a risk of degradation of the wall portion of the well which may no longer be in contact with the drilling fluid.
- US Patent 2,765,146 provides, at intervals along the drill string, passages between the interior and exterior of the drill string to direct upward into the annular space between the drill string and the wall of the well, a portion of the drilling fluid which flows from top to bottom in the drill string. This increases the rate of ascent of the drilling fluid in this annular space and reduces the pressure exerted by the drilling fluid on the formation, in order to avoid the invasion of the formation by debris which could disturb the future production of 'hydrocarbons and requiring an expensive and long cleaning.
- communications are also created between the inside and the outside of the drill string, but to allow crossing of an area with loss of circulation and under conditions such that these communications are compatible with the power.
- modern drilling pumps and do not have a destructive action on the wall of the well.
- the invention relates to a drill string fitting which comprises a body elongated along a vertical axis, internally provided with an axial bore, forming externally, upper and lower cylindrical end portions provided at their free ends with screwing means for inserting the fitting into a drill string and comprising passages which, directed upwards, extend from the interior of the string drilling towards the outside thereof, characterized in that said elongated body comprises, between said end cylindrical portions, a swollen intermediate cylindrical portion, of outside diameter greater than the outside diameter of the upper end portion, which has a face upper connection to the upper end portion and which is provided with at least three recesses, each of which notches said upper face and at dyes said axial bore, distributed circumferentially at regular intervals from each other and in that, in each of these recesses, is inserted an insert, provided with an internal passage directed from bottom to top, opening at its lower part in said bore and opening vertically at its upper part by a nozzle located on a diameter
- the drilling fluid is divided at the right of said internal passage into a first flow which follows the usual course: descent into the drilling string, passage over the drilling tool and back up into the annular space between the well and the drill string and in a second flow which passes through said internal passages and goes up directly into the annular space without causing scouring of the walls of the well.
- this drill string fitting eliminates or at least considerably reduces the losses of the drilling fluid in circulation and makes it possible to cross zones with loss of circulation without slowing down the drilling operations and while maintaining a normal circulation of the drilling fluid.
- this drill string connection acts as a stabilizer for the drill rods inside the drilled well due to the bulge of the intermediate cylindrical portion.
- a drill string fitting comprises a one-piece body 1 which forms an upper cylindrical portion 2, a lower cylindrical portion 3 and an intermediate cylindrical portion 4 and which is provided with an axial bore 5.
- These so-called cylindrical portions may be only substantially and have a low taper.
- the upper 2 and lower 3 portions are provided at their free ends with female 6 and male 7 threads respectively, allowing the connection between an upper part 8 and a lower part 9 of drill string, as shown in FIG. 3.
- the outside diameter of the intermediate portion 4 is larger than the outside diameter of the upper 2 and lower portions 3.
- the portions 2 and 3 may have an outside diameter of 20.3 cm while the outer diameter of the portion 4 can be 28.6 cm.
- the upper edge 10 formed on the upper perimeter of the intermediate portion 4 is connected to the upper portion 2 by a transition portion 11 which here has an outer surface of generally frustoconical shape and whose edge 10 constitutes the outer periphery.
- Three recesses 12, 13, 14 are distributed in the portion 4 and the face 11 distributed circumferentially at equal distance as seen in FIG. 2 and removable inserts 15, 16, 17 are introduced into these recesses. treated, each held by at least one stud.
- Two studs 18, 19 are provided here inserted into aligned holes of the insert and of the portion 4 and retained by screws such as the screw 20 visible in FIG. 2.
- Each insert is traversed by an internal passage 21, visible in FIG. 1, which extends from a lower inlet 22 open in the bore 5 to an upper outlet 23 forming a nozzle and opening vertically upwards over a diameter included between the outer diameters of the upper portion 2 and of the intermediate portion respectively 4.
- This nozzle 23 is itself an interchangeable tungsten carbide element added in the internal passage 21 and provided, in a conventional manner in itself, with a seal seal and a retaining circlip.
- a seal 24 has also been inserted between the intermediate portion 4 and each insert 15, 16, 17.
- a section 25 of the insert 15 has been given a cylindrical shape, 16 or 17 and to the recess part (12, 13, 14) which receives it, in a region close to the bore 5.
- a threaded hole, blocked in operation by a screw 26, facilitates the positioning and the extraction of the added part 15, 16 or 17.
- the inserts 15, 16, 17 reform the outer surface of the intermediate portion 4 but leave gaps in the connection portion delimited by the upper connection face 11 of frustoconical shape. These gaps are between two substantially radial surfaces. These radial surfaces provide protection from the faults 23.
- a refill of a hard material such as tungsten carbide, on the one hand at 27 on what remains of the edge 10 after the execution of the recesses 12, 13, 14 and on the other hand at 28 on the upper edge of the radial surfaces which constitutes a leading edge according to the direction of rotation of the drill string.
- Fig 3 we see the connector 1 mounted in a drill string above the drill rods 29 which carry the drilling tool 30. This drills a well 31 whose wall has a loss of circulation area 32. The circulation of drilling fluid is shown by arrows.
- the fitting 1 is placed above the area with loss of circulation 32. Its action is all the more effective the closer it gets to this area, but it must never cross it. It will therefore be necessary to reassemble the drill string and give the fitting 1 a higher position when it arrives towards zone 32. This ascent operation will be carried out as many times as necessary for the drilling tool to reach the final dimension of drilling before installing a casing.
- the distance between the fitting 1 and the drilling tool 30 will generally be greater than 150 m.
- a connector 1 whose intermediate portion 4 has an outside diameter of 28.6 cm is suitable for a well of 44.3 cm in diameter for example. It can also be used in a narrower well, for example a 31.1 cm diameter well, but it is then preferable to use a fitting 1 provided, on the cylindrical surface of the intermediate portion, with helical grooves such as the grooves 33 shown in FIG. 1, facilitating the passage of the drilling fluid from bottom to top between the well and the intermediate portion 4.

Abstract
Description
- - la Fig 1 représente en demi-coupe axiale et en demi-élévation un raccord de garniture de forage ;
