Abstract

In pipes (1 and 3) for different fluids there is a risk of leakage at the seals and faults. In order to quickly solve this problem, a sleeve (6 and 7) consisting of two halves provided with fixing members (17, 20, 21) is placed around the point where the leak takes place.

Description

Sleeve for abutment against the external surface of a body.
The present invention relates to a sleeve for abutment against the external surface of a body. The body primarily intended is a pipe for transporting various media. The media may be in liquid, gas or powder form, the powder being preferably kept flowing by means of a fluidized bed. How ever well the joints along a pipeline are-sealed, there may be a certain amount of leakage. Defects in the pipeline may also occur, also giving rise to leakage.
The object of the present invention is to enable elimination of such leakage as quickly as possible without having to dismantle damaging piping or pipe joins. This is achieved according to the present invention by using a sleeve which can be placed over that part of a pipeline where there is a leak. The sleeve having two internal, edge surfaces spaced from each other and together forming the inlet opening of the sleeve and in fact its only opening. The peripheral edges are brought into abutment with the surface of the leaking pipe. The leakage is collected in the sleeve which is thus designed to collect medium which has leaked out into its outer periphery, irrespective of whether the sleeve surrounds a horizontal or vertical pipe, or one lying at an angle between these extreme positions.
According to a preferred embodiment of the. invention the sleeve is provided with one or more tapping means, where medium which has flowed out can leave the sleeve, preferably of its own accord.
It is advantageous to make the sleeve of transparent material in order to be able to determine the extent of leakage of the undesired medium from the pipe.
The sleeve may suitably be made having a cylindrical surrounding wall and two end surfaces, one end wall being conical and, seen from the inside, is arranged convexly. The sleeve is provided at its peripheral edge with indications, for removing fragments of the sleeve wall so that it can be fitted to bodies of different dimensions with which the sleeve shall cooperate.
The sleeve is preferably made of two identical halves with securing means enabling them to be joined together in a simple manner. The halves are preferably provided with radially outwardly directed securing flanges, the flanges on one side of the hole for the body passing through, for instance, being provided with holes and on the other side with pegs so that holes and pegs can cooperate.
Each half preferably has one or more flanges designed to completely or partly cover the joints arising where the two halves are joined.
Additional features of the present invention will be revealed in the following claims.
The present invention will be described more fully with reference to the accompanying drawing in which the figure shows a pipe for a medium, and two halves of a sleeve before being fitted together.
In the drawing 1 is a pipe with an end flange 2. Said pipe with end flange is joined to a second pipe 3, also having an end flange 4. The two pipes are then joined through the end flanges by screw joints 5. Even if the seal between the end flanges is good there is a risk of medium flowing out. To prevent this a sleeve is applied. This consists of two halves 6 and 7. The half 6 has a cylindrical surface 8, an upper end surface, not shown, and a lower end surface 10. The end surface is conical and, seen from below, concave. At each end surface is a semi- circular opening, the lower of these being shown and designated 13. The sleeve 6 formed by the surface 6 and ends, one of which is designated 10, is provided with two peripheral flanges 15 and 16 lying in the same plane. The two peripheral flanges terminate at the circular recess and the flange 15 is provided at the rear with outwardly protruding securing pins while the flange 16 is provided with through-holes 17. The upper end surface of the sleeve half 6 may be flat or it may be conical or arched, for instance. In the present case it is imagined to be conical and to be convex seen from the inside. Sleeve half 6 is provided with a tapping nozzle 28 located so that as much medium as possible is removed from the sleeve half 6. A drainage tube 29 is connected to the tapping nozzle. Each circular opening in the two end surfaces of the sleeve half 6 is provided with indications so that fragments can be removed at each opening to fit the pipe with which it shall cooperate. This also means that the two flanges 15 and 16 must also be provided with indications for the removal of fragments of the flanges.
The left sleeve half is identical to the. right half and a repetition of the description is therefore unnecessary. Both halves are made in the same mould so that, for instance, the holes 17 and 21 will be opposite pegs 20. It can be seen clearly in the left sleeve half that each half is provided with a protruding flange 30 partly or wholly following the inner edge of the flange 18. The half 6 is thus also provided with a similar flange along the inner edge of flange 16. These flanges are intended to cover the join formed between the two halves 6 and 7 of the sleeve when they are joined together.
During the manufacture of each hair, each tapping nozzle 26 and 28 is closed at its outer end. These nozzles are only opened when a drainage pipe 27 or 29, respectively, must be attached.
The shape of the two sleeve halves 6 and 7 makes them particularly suitable to application around a vertical pipe since the leaking medium moves immediately towards the bottom of the sleeve towards the edge located lower than the edge close to the pipe. The bottom formed by parts 10 and 11 has an outwardly inclined surface.
If the two sleeve halves are applied on a horizontal pipe, it should be evident that only one tapping nozzle need be opened and that it should be located lowermost in the sleeve.
The characteristic feature of the sleeve according to the invention is that, irrespective of its placing, medium leaking out of the pipe will flow as quickly as possible to the outer periphery of the sleeve, to its tapping nozzle, so as to leave the sleeve as quickly as possible.
There are obviously numerous embodiments fulfilling the concept of the invention as defined.
To avoid all possibility of misunderstanding, a manufacturing drawing of a sleeve according to the invention is enclosed, as well as two photographs showing a model thereof. Provided no difficulty arises in understanding the present invention, the latter manufacturing drawing and the photographs may be omitted. On the other hand, should it prove of value to include the matter of the latter documents, we are willing to file drawings revealing the matter shown therein.
The end surfaces 10 and 11 of the two sleeve halves 6 and 7 may of course being given any desired, shape provided that, when surrounding a vertical pipe, any medium flowing out passes towards the periphery of the sleeve.
The sleeve need not of course be applied only when leakage occurs. It can also be used to prevent leakage, but applying the sleeve at various critical points along a pipe where leakage might be suspected.
The present invention is of particular value for pipes transporting media which would cause environmental damage in the event of a leak.
