Abstract

A padlock which improves protection against rupturing of the padlock barrel. The padlock body (8) is cylindrical in shape and has a rotatable outer layer (9) so as to prevent any torsion being applied to the section of the body (8) containing the locking bolt (6).

Description

IMPROVED PADLOCK The present invention relates to an improved padlock. Existing padlocks are substantially made as shown in figure 1 having a hardened locking arm 1 with a brass body
2 of a substantially narrow rectangular cross-section. The locking arm is axially moveable within a bore 4 and is lockingly held in a second bore 5 by a locking bolt 6 which is released by a key operated tumbler 7.
As the locking arm is hardened steel and the body brass, areas of weakness at 3 and 3' are formed. Therefore the lock can be destroyed by the body of the lock being - gripped in a spanner or like tool along its long sides and the lock twisted rupturing the walls of the lock at 3 and/or 3' .
The present invention seeks to ameliorate this problem by providing a padlock which has a body substantially cylindrical in shape with a rotatable outer annular covering enclosing the cylindrical wall of the body.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying figures, in which:
Figure 2 is a perspective view of a schematic representation of one embodiment of the present invention; and
Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view through figure 2. To provide a lessened chance of purchase by a spanner or such tools the body 8 of the lock is cylindrical in shape. However, the areas of weakness 3 and 3' still remain. To overcome this problem a rotatable outer layer 9 encloses the padlock body. This rotatable outer layer 9 is preferably mounted on two races 10 and 11 of ball bearings with top and bottom seals 12. The outer layer can extend over the top of the body or the top and the bottom of the body as shown in figure 3 so as to add extra protection to the lock.
With the outer layer being rotatable no purchase will be obtainable on the lock body and hence the security of the lock is improved.
Therefore the lock cannot be simply destroyed by a spanner or like tool, which can be easily hid on a person.
It should be obvious that modificatons can be made to the lock as described without departing from the scope or ambit of the present invention.

Claims

THE CLAIMS :
1. A padlock having a substantially cylindrical body with a rotatable outer annular covering, enclosing the cylindrical wall of the body.
2. A padlock according to claim 1, wherein said annular covering is mounted and rotatable on the cylindrical body by means of two races of ball bearings, located intermediate two annular seals.
3. A padlock according to claim 2, wherein said outer annular covering at its top end has an inwardly extending lip overhanging the cylindrical body.
4. A padlock according to claim 3, wherein said outer annular covering at its lower end has an inwardly extending lip overhanging the cylindrical body.
