Definitions
- the present invention relates to a package for liquids with a spherical container body having a tubular emptying opening which largely projects form the container body.
- a container material is used frequently consisting of polyester which is orientation-stretched biaxially so as to obtain maximum mechanical strength. Since the polyester material after the orientation stretching cannot be heat-sealed, because a substantially crystalline molecular structure has been imparted to the material, the manufacture of oriented polyester containers as a rule is done in such a manner that no welding joints have to be made on the packing container.
- the containers are manufactured so that in the first place a "test-tube shaped" thick-walled polyester body, a so-called “parison” or blank, is made by means of injection moulding, this blank, after heating, being stretched by means of compressed air and/or vacuum and made to attach itself to the inside of a moulding cavity which has the shape of the container desired.
- this stretching/blowing process the polyester material is molecular-oriented at the same time as the thickness is reduced, and the orientation has the effect that the mechanical strength properties are substantially improved at the same time as further deformation is prevented because of the stretching of the material even if the container is subjected to internal pressure.
- the packing container with a spherical container body is thus idealfrom a point of view of strength and the package with such a container body will be cheap, since the quantity of packing material which is required to provide a container which can resist the internal pressure emanating from the contents will be minimal.
- the packing container in accordance with the invention which is provided with a largely tubular emptying opening projecting from the container body which is characterized in that its length is at least 0.21 times the diameter of the spherical container body.
- the blank 1 shown in cross-section in fig.l consists of a "test-tube shaped blaak (so-called parison) of polyester material.
- This prefabricated blank is heated to softening temperature and is inserted into a blowing mould, the upper part 10 of the blank being clamped in a holding device. With the help of pressure and vacuum the material is blown and stretched in such a manner that it is made to attach itself to the walls inside a moulding cavity which is of the shape of the container desired, that is to say in the case referred to here, a spherical shape.
- the walls of the blank 1 will of course be thinned out during the stretching at the same time as the material is molecular-oriented biaxially, provided the stretching is done at a suitable temperature (approx. 70 - 100°C).
- a suitable temperature approximately 70 - 100°C.
- the mould is divided, whereupon the moulded container, which in the present case is assumed to have a spherical container body, is removed from the mould. Beside the spherical container body 2 a tubular emptying duct 3 has been formed in the moulding which owing to less stretching deformation is of a thicker quality.
- the container shown in fig.2 is illustrated in oblique position or in the position which the filled container will assume when the contents start to be poured out.
- the liquid level will at the beginning of the emptying operation correspond to the position marked 7 and it is a precondition for an emptying of the liquid contents without problems that the contents jet steers free of the dished part 5 of the container body which is straight underneath the pouring point 6 of the emptying duct 3.
- the radius of the spherical container body has been designated R.
- the point 6 will then be situated at a distance V2 x R from the container centre.
- the length of the tubular opening part 3 therefore, must be (2 - 1) x R which is approximately 0.42 x R or 0.21 x the diameter of the spherical container.
- this supporting ring 4 has a diameter A whilst the height of the ring is B.
- the ring must be dimensioned so that the diameter A provides sufficient supporting base whilst the height B ought to be dimensioned so that the lower part 8 of the spherical container body does not project outside the ring and causes the same to lose its supporting capacity.
- a trigonometric calculation indicates that the ratio A/B should be equal to2sin - / 1 - cos ⁇ 2 , when ⁇ is the encompassing angle of the supporting ring 4 on the spherical container part 2.
- a normal value of the ratio A/B is 5 which gives an encompassing angle ⁇ of approx. 90°.
- the ratio A/B ought to be between 2 - 5.
