Definitions
- the invention relates to an acceleration limit switch with a spherical inertial body made of ferromagnetic material, which is held in the rest position by a magnet system and which are opposed by two mutually insulated contact elements which can be contacted by elastic deformation of a membrane when the inertial body strikes.
- an acceleration limit switch which consists essentially of a permanent magnet, a ferromagnetic ball held by this, a circuit board with comb-like interlocking contact fingers and an elastic, conductive membrane, which is arranged between the ball and the circuit board. If an acceleration above the limit value occurs, the ball tears off the magnet and, due to its inertia, flies against the membrane, so that it briefly touches the circuit board while making contact.
- the conductive or equipped with a conductive area membrane must be held by the special design of a two-part housing.
- the circuit board is held in the housing cover by contact pins.
- the invention is therefore based on the object of reducing the number of individual parts, simplifying the shape of the housing and securing the contact surfaces with minimal effort against corrosion.
- the membrane consists of an insulating film covered with a contact material, which is separated from a second contact material by an insulating material ring in the idle state.
- Embodiments of the invention are illustrated with reference to FIGS. 1-9 of the drawing.
- Fig. 1 denotes a cuboid or cylindrical housing which has a funnel-shaped recess 1a in the upper part.
- a ferromagnetic ball 2 which is held in place by a permanent magnet 3, is mounted in this recess.
- the preferably cylindrical magnet 3, which is polarized in the axial direction, is fastened in a bottom opening of the housing made of plastic.
- a thermoplastic is preferably used, which locks the magnet in place by deforming the edge 1b.
- the bottom of the funnel-shaped recess 1a is designed as a spherical cap, so that the ball 2 is separated from the magnet 3 by a certain wall thickness, which acts as a magnetic air gap.
- the ball 2 is held in its rest position only by the inhomogeneity of the stray magnetic field.
- the mechanical part of the switch thus consists only of a magnet, ball and housing. With 9, 10, 11, 12 pressed metal pins are referred to, which are used for alternative attachment to a circuit board.
- the electrical part of the switch is formed by a partially metallized double film 4, which is protected by the cover 5.
- the cover 5, which is preferably designed as an insulating stamped part, has, like the double film 4, openings, through which molded rivets 1c, 1d, consisting of the material of the housing, protrude. These rivets are thermally or ultrasonically deformed when the switch is installed.
- FIG. 2 shows a circular plastic film 4a with a lateral connecting lug 4a1 and a contact mat 4a2.
- a circular ring 4b is shown, which consists of double-sided adhesive plastic film.
- Fig. 4 as a counterpart to Fig. 2, the film with 4c be is drawn, which carries a lateral connecting lug 4c1 and a contact 4c2. After the parts 4a, 4b and 4c have been glued together, a contact element 4 is obtained, as shown in an exaggerated manner in FIG. 5.
- An air-filled cavity 6 is formed between the parts 4a and 4c and is completely sealed off from the outside air by the ring 4b.
- the metal layers face each other at a distance of a few tenths of a millimeter, so that there is a sufficient insulation gap.
- the lower film is elastically deformed to such an extent that the contact is briefly closed.
- the parts 4a, 4b and 4c are shown without rivet holes. Their diameter can also be smaller than the rivet hole circle.
- the deformation characteristic of the film is chosen so that only the weight of the ball does not lead to contact. This prevents the switch from making permanent contact when the vehicle is on the roof, e.g. could permanently lock the belt buckle.
- the ball 2 in its bearing is completely sealed from the outside space by the foils 4a, 4b and 4c and the cover 5 and is not involved in electrical contacting with its metal surface, its surface does not require a noble metal layer.
- the contact mat 4a2 can be applied directly to the cover 5 so that it is designed as a printed circuit board.
- F ig. 6 shows the complete switch according to FIG. 1 in perspective.
- the housing 1 consists of a cuboid that merges into a half cylinder. This means that at least one flat surface is available in all three coordinate directions for mounting on a printed circuit board or a housing.
- the contact system 4 has the shape of a rectangle with an adjoining semicircular surface.
- FIG. 7 An alternative design is shown in FIG. 7. It differs from FIG. 1 only in that the lower part of the housing 1 carries a coil 7 and a soft iron core 8 takes the place of the permanent magnet.
- the coil 7 is connected to the vehicle electrical system when the ignition of the motor vehicle is switched on.
- the tripping or limit value of the switch can then be easily adjusted in the factory using a series resistor. But it would also be conceivable that the driver is given a certain setting option, so that he e.g. can switch between "Autobahn” and "Geländefahrt". This can help to avoid expensive false triggering of an impact protection (airbag).
- 21 denotes a preferably cylindrical plastic housing, one symmetri to the axis CD and funnel or frustoconical cavity 21a encloses.
- a ferromagnetic, spherical inertial body 22 is mounted in this cavity. Mounted under the inertial body 22.
- a pot-like ferromagnetic yoke 25 is pushed over the coil 24 and can be varied to set the acceleration limit value for a specific magnetizing current.
- Core 23 and yoke 25 are permanently connected by a molded rivet 23a formed from the core material.
- the yoke cup 25 also provides mechanical protection for the coil 24.
- the cavity 21a is closed at the top by a rubber-elastic membrane 26 with a conductive central zone 26a and a printed circuit board 27.
- the printed circuit board 27 has two connecting pins 27a and 27b, which are connected with interdigitated conductor structures.
- the membrane 26 is reinforced in the edge zone 26b so that the conductive central zone does not touch the circuit board in the idle state.
- Diaphragm 26 and circuit board 27 are captively and sealingly connected to housing 21 by the "flanged" collar 21h. If a thermoplastic housing material is used, the edge zone 21h can be deformed using ultrasound.
- the membrane 26 is preferably so rigid in its spring characteristic that no contact is triggered by the weight of the inertial body 22 alone. If the vehicle slides over the road after a primary impact on the side or the roof, a series of evaluable secondary impulses is obtained, but not in the rest position a permanent contact.
- the housing 21 has two bores 21c, 21d lying on an optical axis. Transmitters 28 and receivers 29 of a light barrier are inserted into these bores, the optical axis of which intersects the spherical inertial body 22 in its rest position.
- the frustoconical cavity 21a preferably merges into a spherical cap 21b.
- the bores 21c, 21d can break through the region of the spherical cap 21b in order to avoid reflection losses in the visible or infrared light used.
- the bores 21c, 21d at the transition to the spherical cap 21b can be closed with molded optical windows.
- the cylindrical light-emitting and receiver diodes, which are available in very small dimensions, are sealed in the holes by casting resin drops or permanently plastic putty.
- the lead wires led out are designated 28a, 29a.
- prism-like ribs 21e, 21f, 21g are incorporated into the conical jacket, which prevent the inertial body 22 from spinning or at least slow it down considerably. A similar effect could be achieved through appropriate deepening.
- the entire acceleration limit switch can be attached to a larger circuit board by means of the connecting pins 27a, 27b.
- the connecting wires 28a, 29a are then also to be soldered to this circuit board.
- FIG. 9 shows the cross section of the housing 21 and the inertial body 22 and the top view of the yoke 25.
- the transmitter 28 and receiver 29 are inserted into the bores 21c, 21d.
- the optical axis is indicated by the line EF.
- the position of use of the switch corresponds to the representation in which the axis of symmetry CD coincides with the vertical, ie the direction of gravity.
- the response value for everyone is on the Axis CD is the same as vertical acceleration directions. In other words, it has no influence on the response value whether the vehicle equipped with the switch is pushed from the front, from behind or from the side. In the event of impacts in the direction of the CD axis, however, the sensitivity is considerably greater.
- the switch described has two independent contact systems. If the magnetic holding force that can be set via the coil 24 is exceeded, the body 22 tears off, so that the barrier 28, 29 responds after a very short travel distance. At the end of the taxiway or flight path, the contact between the pins 27a, 27b is closed. The time interval between the signals depends on the acceleration and is of the order of milliseconds.
- the electromagnet 23, 24, 25 can be replaced by a permanent magnet.
- the critical tearing force of the inertial body for primary and secondary impacts is the same.
- the downstream electronics are designed such that an output signal appears when the acceleration of the primary shock is greater than 6 g and the light barrier 28, 29 responds for more than 20 ms.
- the measurement of this acceleration-time area is also possible via the contact system 26, 27 or via a cooperation of the two contact systems. This minimum requirement for the size and duration of an acceleration prevents e.g. the very expensive airbag deploys due to a very hard and short bump in the road.
- the light barrier detects the primary shock at the earliest possible time, further output signals can be derived from the membrane circuit board contact 26, -27 via the secondary and tertiary shocks. So that the inertial body 22 is not immediately caught by the magnet system after the primary impact, it should preferably be via the Light barrier 28, 29, the coil 24 are switched off. However, it can also be expedient to reduce the tear-off point of the electromagnet to 3, 4 or 5 g with the aid of this light barrier.
- the limit switch can be easily checked for the function of all components due to its electromagnetically controlled holding force.
- the holding current is interrupted as part of a test program and the switch is lightly triggered. This makes it possible to determine whether both contact systems respond.
- the mobility of the inertial body and the function of the electromagnet are checked.
- the optimal time for the seat belt release command strongly depends on the course of the accident. Only in the case of a classic rear-end collision, in which the vehicle comes to a standstill directly at the point of impact, the belt may be loosened about 2 - 3 seconds after the impact. However, if the vehicle collides several times or throws after the first impact, rolls over or slides on the roof, the belt must not open too early. The limit switch must therefore be able, after the first response at 8 g, for example, in the subsequent seconds for additional smaller accelerations, e.g. to signal between 2 and 4 g. This is possible if the response sensitivity is increased after the first contact. For this purpose, the current of the electromagnet is reduced or switched off in the design according to FIG.
- the belt release command is only passed on if for a minimum period of e.g. No contact was made for 2 - 3 seconds. This ensures that the straps are unlocked neither too early nor too late.
- the object of the invention is intended to be installed as standard in all types of passenger cars. For cost reasons, however, the complete monitoring programs should be reserved for upper and middle class vehicles.

Abstract
Description
The invention relates to an acceleration limit switch with a spherical inertial body made of ferromagnetic material, which is held in the rest position by a magnet system and which are opposed by two mutually insulated contact elements which can be contacted by elastic deformation of a membrane when the inertial body strikes.
From DE-OS 30 22 878 an acceleration limit switch has become known, which consists essentially of a permanent magnet, a ferromagnetic ball held by this, a circuit board with comb-like interlocking contact fingers and an elastic, conductive membrane, which is arranged between the ball and the circuit board. If an acceleration above the limit value occurs, the ball tears off the magnet and, due to its inertia, flies against the membrane, so that it briefly touches the circuit board while making contact. The conductive or equipped with a conductive area membrane must be held by the special design of a two-part housing. The circuit board is held in the housing cover by contact pins.
It has been found that the manufacture of the housing and functional parts of the known acceleration limit switch is still too cost-intensive. For example wise it is necessary to gold-plate the contact tracks of the circuit board so that a reliable response is guaranteed even after years of non-use under climatically unfavorable conditions.
The invention is therefore based on the object of reducing the number of individual parts, simplifying the shape of the housing and securing the contact surfaces with minimal effort against corrosion.
It is another object of the invention to further expand the controllability of the limit switch in order to electronically evaluate successive contact closings for controlling restraint devices, warning systems or for accident analysis.
This object is achieved in that the membrane consists of an insulating film covered with a contact material, which is separated from a second contact material by an insulating material ring in the idle state.

In Fig. 1, 1 denotes a cuboid or cylindrical housing which has a funnel-
The electrical part of the switch is formed by a partially metallized
The structure of the electrical part of the switch is shown in FIGS. 2-5. FIG. 2 shows a circular
In Fig. 3 a
In Fig. 4 as a counterpart to Fig. 2, the film with 4c be is drawn, which carries a lateral connecting lug 4c1 and a contact 4c2. After the
An air-filled
The deformation characteristic of the film is chosen so that only the weight of the ball does not lead to contact. This prevents the switch from making permanent contact when the vehicle is on the roof, e.g. could permanently lock the belt buckle.
Since the
The response value in the range of a few g strongly depends on the distance between the magnet and the ball. If you design the receiving opening for the permanent magnet as a press fit, you can press in the magnet in several stages and measure the limit value. As a result, the response value can be maintained within narrow tolerances.
F ig. 6 shows the complete switch according to FIG. 1 in perspective. The
With 11, 12, 13, 14 pressed pins are referred to, which can be fixed by soldering or bending on a circuit board or housing wall. The pins, of which usually only a pair is required, can also be replaced by molded bolts made of the housing material, which are formed into a rivet head after assembly. The
An alternative design is shown in FIG. 7. It differs from FIG. 1 only in that the lower part of the
In Fig. 8, 21 denotes a preferably cylindrical plastic housing, one symmetri to the axis CD and funnel or
The
In the area of the sectional plane AB, the
If a clear thermoplastic is used as the housing material, the
In order to prevent the spherical
The entire acceleration limit switch can be attached to a larger circuit board by means of the connecting
Die optische Achse ist mit der Linie EF angedeutet.FIG. 9 shows the cross section of the
The position of use of the switch corresponds to the representation in which the axis of symmetry CD coincides with the vertical, ie the direction of gravity. As a result of the rotationally symmetrical design of the
The switch described has two independent contact systems. If the magnetic holding force that can be set via the
In a particularly inexpensive version, the
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the downstream electronics are designed such that an output signal appears when the acceleration of the primary shock is greater than 6 g and the
While the light barrier detects the primary shock at the earliest possible time, further output signals can be derived from the membrane
- a) The absolute mean acceleration during the time between the light barrier and the circuit board contact,
- b) the length of stay of the
body 22 on themembrane 26, which provides information about the existence and the duration of a certain minimum acceleration, - c) the number of acceleration shocks from the primary shock to secondary and tertiary shocks until the vehicle comes to a complete standstill, the first or second contact path being able to be used to reduce the coil current and thus the limit value once or several times,
- d) the time of tearing off regardless of the time of impact.
The advantage should not be underestimated that even if one of the two contact systems fails, all emergency measures can still be initiated. The system is therefore double redundant.
In addition, the limit switch can be easily checked for the function of all components due to its electromagnetically controlled holding force. For this purpose, the holding current is interrupted as part of a test program and the switch is lightly triggered. This makes it possible to determine whether both contact systems respond. At the same time, the mobility of the inertial body and the function of the electromagnet are checked.
- Automatic activation of the hazard warning lights because the driver may not be able to do so.
- Trigger for a door release,
- Activation of impact protection, in particular an airbag,
- Use of electromotive means that pull the belt system tight immediately after an abnormal acceleration,
- Use of automatic belt release systems that should make it easier for the victim to get out or recover.
The optimal time for the seat belt release command strongly depends on the course of the accident. 7, so that multiple contact closings occur until the vehicle comes to an absolute standstill. The belt release command is only passed on if for a minimum period of e.g. No contact was made for 2 - 3 seconds. This ensures that the straps are unlocked neither too early nor too late.
The best way to implement the invention can be seen in the arrangement according to FIGS. 8 and 9, because this sensor can be used to set up a monitoring program that is optimally adapted to each vehicle type.
The object of the invention is intended to be installed as standard in all types of passenger cars. For cost reasons, however, the complete monitoring programs should be reserved for upper and middle class vehicles.
