Definitions
- the present invention relates to transducer or sensor devices which use embedded polymer diaphragms to perform mechanical or acoustic transfer functions.
- the invention relates more particularly to electromechanical transducers and accelerometers.
- Such a structure, combining materials as different as a metal and a polymer, has the drawback resulting from the large difference between the coefficients of thermal expansion of these materials.
- the typical values of the thermal expansion coefficients range from 0.5.10 -5 to 2.10 -5 K -1 for metals and from 0.5.10 -4 to 5.10 -4 K -1 for polymers of common use.
- polymers deform more than metals with temperature.
- a differential expansion occurs between the jaws and the diaphragm which can modify the mechanical state of the diaphragm by affecting either its shape or its state of stress. If the temperature variations are small, the mechanical changes to the diaphragm are reversible. The same does not apply to significant variations in temperature, for example of the order of magnitude of those imposed by military standards. In this case, the diaphragm may undergo irreversible mechanical changes which lead to alterations in its electromechanical properties.
- the invention proposes the implementation of means avoiding any relative movement caused by temperature variations, of a diaphragm with respect to its mounting parts. These means act either by increasing the friction between the different parts, or by anchoring the diaphragm relative to its jaws.
- the subject of the invention is therefore a device for embedding a piezoelectric diaphragm between jaws which exert a clamping of the diaphragm in one or more peripheral zones, said device being able to be subjected to temperature variations liable to cause shrinkage of the diaphragm. with respect to its jaws, characterized in that the jaws and the diaphragm define an embedding profile having at least one surface which opposes said withdrawal.
- the invention also relates to a method for producing such an embedding device.
- the invention also relates to an electromechanical transducer using a piezoelectric diaphragm, characterized in that the embedding device has a profile which opposes a withdrawal of the diaphragm relative to its jaws.
- FIG. 1 shows the basic structure of a microphone capsule with a vibrating element in the form of an embedded plate.
- the capsule consists of a two-part casing comprising a body 1 and a flange 2.
- a plate 3 serving as a piezoelectric polymer diaphragm is pinched between the body and the flange of the housing. A cut was made in the capsule to better see the different parts.
- Elements 1 and 2 generally made of aluminum, act as installation parts.
- Figures 2 (a) to 2 (d) show the deformations caused on a diaphragm embedded by differential expansion.
- Figure 2 (a) schematically shows a diaphragm 4 and its mounting parts 5 and 6.
- This figure is a diametrical sectional view of a microphone capsule of the type of Figure 1 free from any deformation and at ambient temperature. If the capsule is subjected to a temperature variation, dilations or contractions will occur in its constituent elements. For example, at a temperature below ambient temperature, the elements will undergo a radial stress Xr causing a reduction in the external dimensions of the capsule as shown in FIG. 2 (b). Since the polymer undergoes dimensional variations due to temperature more than the metal parts 5 and 6, it tends to entrain them in its deformation.
- FIG. 3 is a meridian sectional view of such a microphone capsule piezoelectric plate.
- the housing includes an upper part 16 made of metal which fits into a housing bottom It provided with insulated connection terminals 14.
- the piezoelectric plate 17 provided with metallizations 15 and 18 is embedded frusto-conically between the edge of the upper part 16 of the housing and a metal ring 8 with trapezoidal section.
- the ring 8 is pressed against the plate 17 by an insulating washer 9 resting on an elastic blocking piece 10 which enters a circular slot in the upper part 16 of the housing.
- a pad 12 of sound absorbing material is housed in the central recess of the upper part 16 of the housing.
- This buffer is wedged between the part 9 and a printed circuit board 13 on which are arranged the electronic components of an electrical impedance adapter circuit.
- the materials used for the plate 17 and the mounting parts are assumed to be identical to the previous case. The same goes for the dimensions of the plate 17.
- the solution which consists in increasing the clamping force is not to be retained for a polymer diaphragm because of its ability to creep which leads after a certain time to a relaxation of the compressive force applied. This effect is particularly marked if the capsule undergoes a heating cycle before a cooling cycle.
- the shape of the diaphragm is obtained by molding, it is possible to provide at its periphery an O-ring bead which is supported on the external lateral surface of the embedding parts as shown in FIG. 4. This solution prevents any removal of the embedded part . To be valid this shoulder must be done without play. This supposes a very precise adjustment of the inside diameter of the bead 20 of the diaphragm 21 on the outside diameter of the embedding pieces 22 and 23. This solution does not apply to a diaphragm obtained by simple cutting from a large sheet which is the case with most piezoelectric polymer diaphragm devices.
- the amplitude of the roughness must be of the order of magnitude of the thickness of the diaphragm.
- An effective way to combat shrinkage is to carry out a corrugation of the entire surface of the diaphragm in contact with the embedding parts, the amplitude of these corrugations and their average pitch being of the order of magnitude of a fraction of the thickness of the diaphragm.
- This solution has certain drawbacks arising from the absence of a diaphragm positioning area, which influences the speed of execution of the encapsulation operations.
- Another disadvantage arises in the interior contact zone of the different parts, referenced 25 in FIG. 2 (a). Indeed, according to the profile of the corrugation, the boundary conditions (in particular the slope at the origin) can be influenced by the precision of the assembly.
- FIG. 5 is an example of an installation profile produced according to the invention.
- the polymer plate 31 is clamped between the parts 32 and 33.
- the region 34 adjacent to the inner edge has a profile adapted to optimal mounting conditions: that is to say a smooth surface with very good parallelism of the surfaces jaws 32 and 33. It constitutes a crown whose width is much greater than the thickness of the diaphragm so as to avoid any hinge effect.
- This profile is also very well suited for making electrical contact between the jaws and electrodes carried by the diaphragm.
- the region 35 adjacent to the outer edge of the embedding parts allows good resistance to the stresses due to the possible retraction of the polymer plate.
- the L-shaped profile given to parts 32 and 33 creates a peripheral anchoring which is better opposed to sliding forces than a rigorously flat plate.
- the anchoring function can be ensured by numerous profiles. In increasing order of complexity and efficiency, these profiles can be L-shaped, S-shaped, U-shaped or, more generally, can have n curvatures. The higher the number of bends, the greater the sliding resistance of the different parts. In all cases, the two main geometric parameters which determine the effectiveness of the anchoring are the depth p determined with respect to the mean plane of the polymer plate and the radius r of the rounding of the curvatures. The radius r must always be chosen with a value at most comparable to the thickness of the diaphragm and preferably of the order of magnitude of a fraction thereof.
- the most favorable situation is that in which the curvature of the diaphragm is imposed by a profile with sharp angles of the jaws as is possible when they are obtained by bar turning. Other methods of executing these parts (stamping, spinning, foundry) do not allow such a profile to be produced as easily. In such a case, the lower resistance of the bends to friction must be compensated by a greater depth p or by an increase in the number of bends. It is advantageous that the depth p is at least equal to a few tenths of the thickness of the diaphragm.
- Figures 6 to 8 are alternative embodiments of recesses according to the invention.
- the plate 40 is sandwiched between jaws 41 and 42 providing it with an S profile.
- the jaws 46 and 47 impose a U-shaped embedding profile for the plate 45.
- the shape of the jaws 51 and 52 determines a profile with 3 bends for the embedding of the plate 50.
- the corrugation profile of one jaw is substantially parallel to that of the other jaw.
- Their dimensioning must be such that, after tightening, the spacing of the corrugations perpendicular to the diaphragm is slightly greater (by about 5%) than its thickness.
- a rating affected by such tolerances makes it possible to avoid material jamming inside the corrugation, and above all to bring the clamping force where it is necessary, that is to say on the embedding crown. .
- Corrugated jaws can be used as a means of forming the diaphragm.
- the diaphragm is inserted into the assembly in the form of a flat disc, the tightening of the jaws causing it to match the corrugation profile. It is then preferable to follow this assembly with a heat treatment at a temperature sufficient to soften the polymer and perfect its formation by bringing the diaphragm in intimate contact with the curvatures of the profile.
- This process may not be applicable if the required clamping force is too high to be communicated to the jaw, or if the complete device cannot withstand the heat treatment.
- the diaphragm can be thermoformed beforehand according to a profile identical or similar to that of the jaws. A hybrid process consists in tightening the jaws while hot, these then playing directly the role of thermoforming mold.
- an additional advantage of this built-in diaphragm structure is that the interlocking of the corrugation profiles one inside the other provides self-centering of the jaws.
- this function is generally provided either by a separate guide piece, or by an assembly tool defining the alignment precision.
- the use of a mounting profile according to the invention makes it possible to reduce the critical nature of this function, or even to remove a part from the assembly.
- in-depth tests have been carried out on microphone capsules, the fitting of which has an S-profile with sharp angles and the depth p of which is equal to the thickness of the diaphragm.
- the tightening was carried out without prior thermoforming of the diaphragm and was followed by annealing at 90 ° C for 1 hour. After storage at -40 ° C for several thousand hours, the relative variations in microphone sensitivity after returning to ambient temperature do not exceed + 0.5 dB.

Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to transducer or sensor devices which use embedded polymer diaphragms to perform mechanical or acoustic transfer functions. The invention relates more particularly to electromechanical transducers and accelerometers.
Recent developments in piezoelectric polymers have made it possible to apply them to devices which often use them in the form of an embedded diaphragm. Installation is generally carried out by clamping between metal jaws. Metal jaws have the advantage over those made of other materials to provide a fitting having good mechanical qualities, to withstand the creep stresses generated during tightening of the diaphragm. They also meet the requirements for precision and mass production. The choice of metal is all the more justified when the parts used for embedding have to ensure electrical contact by pressure on the electrodes supported by the diaphragm.
Such a structure, combining materials as different as a metal and a polymer, has the drawback resulting from the large difference between the coefficients of thermal expansion of these materials. Indeed, the typical values of the thermal expansion coefficients range from 0.5.10 -5 to 2.10 -5 K -1 for metals and from 0.5.10 -4 to 5.10 -4 K -1 for polymers of common use. As a result, polymers deform more than metals with temperature. When the temperature varies, a differential expansion occurs between the jaws and the diaphragm which can modify the mechanical state of the diaphragm by affecting either its shape or its state of stress.
In order to overcome these drawbacks, the invention proposes the implementation of means avoiding any relative movement caused by temperature variations, of a diaphragm with respect to its mounting parts. These means act either by increasing the friction between the different parts, or by anchoring the diaphragm relative to its jaws.
The subject of the invention is therefore a device for embedding a piezoelectric diaphragm between jaws which exert a clamping of the diaphragm in one or more peripheral zones, said device being able to be subjected to temperature variations liable to cause shrinkage of the diaphragm. with respect to its jaws, characterized in that the jaws and the diaphragm define an embedding profile having at least one surface which opposes said withdrawal.
The invention also relates to a method for producing such an embedding device.
The invention also relates to an electromechanical transducer using a piezoelectric diaphragm, characterized in that the embedding device has a profile which opposes a withdrawal of the diaphragm relative to its jaws.

Les éléments 1 et 2, généralement en aluminium, jouent le rôle de pièces d'encastrement.FIG. 1 shows the basic structure of a microphone capsule with a vibrating element in the form of an embedded plate. The capsule consists of a two-part casing comprising a
Figures 2 (a) to 2 (d) show the deformations caused on a diaphragm embedded by differential expansion. Figure 2 (a) schematically shows a
The effects of such a large temperature cycle cause an irreversible change in the characteristics of the capsule. In particular, parameters such as compliance and the frequencies of the resonance modes have their values modified. This can result in operating alterations, degradations and poor reproducibility of the quantities to be received or transmitted.
- - the
piezoelectric diaphragm 3 is made of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVF 2 ). Its thickness is 200 micrometers, the diameter of therecess 14 mm, the coefficient of linear expansion of PVF 2 a = 100.10 -6 K. -1 . - -
1 and 2 are made of aluminum with a linear expansion coefficient α '= 22.10 -6 K -1 .jaws
For a temperature difference A T, the radial stress Xr can be estimated by the relation: Xr = E (a - a '). A T, where E denotes the Young's modulus of PVF 2 (3.10 9 Nm -2 ). The transition from room temperature to a temperature of - 40 ° C causes a radial stress which corresponds to a force of approximately 140 N radially distributed over the perimeter of installation.
We see that after a few hours at -40 ° C and return to room temperature, the frequency fo and the sensitivity S have seen their value change significantly. The geometry given to the piezoelectric plate therefore does not compensate for the effects due to large temperature variations.
The solutions adopted must take into account the fact that it is sometimes possible to use a
The solution which consists in increasing the clamping force is not to be retained for a polymer diaphragm because of its ability to creep which leads after a certain time to a relaxation of the compressive force applied. This effect is particularly marked if the capsule undergoes a heating cycle before a cooling cycle.
If the shape of the diaphragm is obtained by molding, it is possible to provide at its periphery an O-ring bead which is supported on the external lateral surface of the embedding parts as shown in FIG. 4. This solution prevents any removal of the embedded part . To be valid this shoulder must be done without play. This supposes a very precise adjustment of the inside diameter of the
It is more effective, to combat the tensile stress Xr, to clamp the diaphragm between rough surfaces. The surface condition of the mounting parts in contact with the diaphragm therefore helps to prevent the diaphragm from retracting. In practice, to have an effective action on the movements of a PVF 2 diaphragm in its embedding, the amplitude of the roughness must be of the order of magnitude of the thickness of the diaphragm.
An effective way to combat shrinkage is to carry out a corrugation of the entire surface of the diaphragm in contact with the embedding parts, the amplitude of these corrugations and their average pitch being of the order of magnitude of a fraction of the thickness of the diaphragm. This solution has certain drawbacks arising from the absence of a diaphragm positioning area, which influences the speed of execution of the encapsulation operations. Another disadvantage arises in the interior contact zone of the different parts, referenced 25 in FIG. 2 (a). Indeed, according to the profile of the corrugation, the boundary conditions (in particular the slope at the origin) can be influenced by the precision of the assembly.
The best solution consists in having an embedding profile comprising two concentric regions playing distinct roles: a region adjacent to the inner edge of the embedding pieces and a region adjacent to the outer edge. FIG. 5 is an example of an installation profile produced according to the invention. The
The anchoring function can be ensured by numerous profiles. The most favorable situation is that in which the curvature of the diaphragm is imposed by a profile with sharp angles of the jaws as is possible when they are obtained by bar turning.
In FIG. 6, the
The corrugation profile of one jaw is substantially parallel to that of the other jaw. Their dimensioning must be such that, after tightening, the spacing of the corrugations perpendicular to the diaphragm is slightly greater (by about 5%) than its thickness. A rating affected by such tolerances makes it possible to avoid material jamming inside the corrugation, and above all to bring the clamping force where it is necessary, that is to say on the embedding crown. .
As regards the method of assembling the diaphragm between its jaws, two possibilities can be envisaged. Corrugated jaws can be used as a means of forming the diaphragm. In this case, the diaphragm is inserted into the assembly in the form of a flat disc, the tightening of the jaws causing it to match the corrugation profile. It is then preferable to follow this assembly with a heat treatment at a temperature sufficient to soften the polymer and perfect its formation by bringing the diaphragm in intimate contact with the curvatures of the profile. This process may not be applicable if the required clamping force is too high to be communicated to the jaw, or if the complete device cannot withstand the heat treatment. In such a case, the diaphragm can be thermoformed beforehand according to a profile identical or similar to that of the jaws. A hybrid process consists in tightening the jaws while hot, these then playing directly the role of thermoforming mold.
Whatever the assembly method, an additional advantage of this built-in diaphragm structure is that the interlocking of the corrugation profiles one inside the other provides self-centering of the jaws. In the overall structure of a device, this function is generally provided either by a separate guide piece, or by an assembly tool defining the alignment precision. The use of a mounting profile according to the invention makes it possible to reduce the critical nature of this function, or even to remove a part from the assembly.
By way of example, in-depth tests have been carried out on microphone capsules, the fitting of which has an S-profile with sharp angles and the depth p of which is equal to the thickness of the diaphragm. The tightening was carried out without prior thermoforming of the diaphragm and was followed by annealing at 90 ° C for 1 hour. After storage at -40 ° C for several thousand hours, the relative variations in microphone sensitivity after returning to ambient temperature do not exceed + 0.5 dB. These tests were carried out on around twenty microphones.
