Definitions

  • stereo speakers have been proposed grouping the two channels, left and right, in a single sound enclosure, for example the Jensen S-100 speaker.
  • These speakers use three loudspeakers directed towards the listening room in three divergent directions, the central loudspeaker being supplied by the sum of the signals "left” and “right” (L + R), the loudspeaker on the left being powered by the differential signal (L - R) and the right speaker being powered by a reverse differential signal - (L - R).
  • the disadvantage of such speakers is that they require a special transformer on each channel with isolated secondary which makes it impossible to adapt them to current amplifiers.
  • the stereophonic effect of these speakers was either unstable or imperfect and that the listening position relative to the speaker was very critical.
  • US Patent 3,933,219 describes a monolithic stereophonic enclosure as in the preamble of claim 1 comprising a bottom, a cover and side walls, two of which, forming an angle between them, each carry several speakers all directed towards the rear of the enclosure.
  • Patent FR 2,407,635 describes a monolithic stereophonic enclosure comprising two faces of trapezoidal shape forming an angle between them and each carrying several loudspeakers arranged along a diagonal of the wall.
  • the object of the present invention is to produce a single enclosure for the reproduction of stereophonic sounds, the loudspeakers of which can be supplied directly by the "left" or “right” signals of an amplifier, enabling the effect to be achieved. stable and perfect stereophonic and with which the listener is not constrained to a precise listening position.
  • the single stereophonic speaker illustrated comprises a base plate 1, provided with feet 2, on which are fixed a front wall 3 intended to face the listener and two sides 4 forming an angle of approximately 120 ° with the front wall 3 with a width of between 1/3 and 1/5 approximately of that of the front wall 3.
  • a shelf 5 closes off the top of the enclosure.
  • This enclosure has a middle partition 6 extending perpendicularly towards the rear from the front wall separating the enclosure into two chambers 7, 8. Each of these chambers 7, 8 is closed towards the rear by a wall 9, 10 perpendicular each to one of the sides 4 and forming an angle of about 60 ° with the middle partition 6.
  • These rear walls 9, 10 serve as support for the loudspeakers which are directed towards the rear of the enclosure.
  • a fabric 11, 12 stretched between the sides 4 and the middle partition 6 hides said speakers.
  • the enclosure In the service position, the enclosure is placed in front of a wall of the listening room, the front face 3 being parallel to this wall, the rear edge of the middle partition 6 being distant from this wall by a few centimeters or a few tens. generally centimeters.
  • the chambers 7 can be at least partially filled with glass wool or other sound insulation material.
  • Each rear wall 9, 10 serves as a support for several speakers, from two to five for example, but preferably three to four.
  • each rear wall 9, 10 has four speakers 13, 14, 15, 16 arranged one above the other and offset laterally with respect to each other.
  • This line passing through the centers of the speakers can be a straight line, a broken line or a curve according to the executions of the enclosure.
  • this line joining the centers of the loudspeakers extends in a sector between two straight lines a, b forming angles a, respectively 8 with the middle partition 6 respectively the bottom of the enclosure between 15 ° and 50 °.
  • the loudspeakers 13, 14, 15, 16 are preferably of the same size and can be either identical or have different frequency characteristics. In the latter case, the loudspeakers more particularly provided for the reproduction of low frequencies are placed near the bottom 1 and the middle partition 6, while the loudspeakers intended more particularly for the reproduction of treble are located towards the top of the enclosure and away from the partition 6.
  • all the speakers mounted on the same rear wall 9, 10 are all fed by the same "right", respectively "left” signal, delivered by a stereophonic amplifier, possibly via a filter correcting the frequency reproduction characteristics of the loudspeakers.
  • This enclosure allows an acoustic coupling between the chambers 7 and 8 which can be considered analogous to the mechanical coupling existing between the two channels when playing a disc using a needle or sapphire which reads the two "left” and “right” engravings and each transmits it to a transducer but necessarily with a ceratin mechanical coupling between the two signals.
  • this acoustic coupling between the two channels can be modified either by acting on the elasticity or the rigidity of the middle partition 6 which acts as a membrane between the two chambers 7 and 8 or by drilling one or more holes of appropriate size and shape to make a direct connection between chambers 7 and 8.
  • the loudspeakers 17, 17 ′ of the first pair, the lower pair, have their axes located on a vertical line, ie parallel to the middle partition 6.
  • the loudspeakers 18, 18 'of the second pair are located above the first loudspeakers and more distant than these from the middle partition 6.
  • the axes of the loudspeakers 18, 18' are connected by a straight line forming an angle 5 with the middle partition 6.
  • the loudspeakers 19, 19 ′ of the third pair are aligned on a straight line forming an angle ⁇ , larger than the angle 5, with the middle partition. These two loudspeakers 19, 19 ′ are located above the loudspeakers 18, 18 ′ and the loudspeaker 19 is more distant from the partition 6 than is the loudspeaker 18 likewise the loudspeaker speaker 19 'is further from partition 6 than speaker 18' is.
  • the loudspeakers 20, 20 ′ of the fourth pair are aligned on a horizontal straight line forming a right angle with the middle partition 6 and the loudspeakers 20, respectively 20 ′ are more distant from this partition 6 than are the loudspeakers 19, respectively 19 '.
  • each pair of speakers 17, 17 '; 18, 18 '; 19, 19 'and 20, 20' would be replaced by an elliptical loudspeaker whose major axis would be oriented as are the line segments connecting the centers of the loudspeakers of the same pair.
  • the center of the elliptical loudspeakers would be located on a line going away simultaneously from the bottom 1 and the partition 6 of the enclosure.
  • the centers or axes of all the loudspeakers are located in a sector delimited between lines a and b intersecting on the intersection of the bottom 1 and the partition 6 and forming angles a with the partition 6, respectively j3 with the bottom 1 between 15 ° and 50 °, preferably 30 °.
