Abstract

A stapling machine has stapling heads (18) mounted on a pivoted beam (14) so as to rise and fall into co-operation with anvils (32) in a fixed knife edge (34). Sheet material is ad­ vanced over a platform (60A, B) to a position between the sta­ pling heads and the knife edge so that it can be stapled. It can also be creased along the spine by means of a pair of bars (38) spring-loaded towards each other and carried on arms (39) pivoted (41) so that the bars (38) can be brought down onto the sheet material and press it down around the knife edge. The lower end of the movement of the bars can trip a micro­ switch (84) to electrically operate the stapling heads, or the stapling heads can be separately manually operated. The bars (38) can be arranged to grip the folded spine of the sheet ma­ terial on the return movement, so as to present the spine for manual removal from between the bars.
