Abstract
- A prism (4) consists of LiNbO 3 and has a prism angle y '= 89.2 °.
- An attachment prism (5) consists of polystyrene and has a prism angle β = 36.4 °.
Description
The present invention relates to a prism coupler for coupling and / or coupling radiation into or out of an optical waveguide according to the preamble of
When light is coupled in or out of optical waveguides by means of a prism, the coupling angle α is generally temperature-dependent.
The object of the present invention is to generally show how the coupling angle can be made independent of temperature in a prism coupler of the type mentioned at the beginning.

In FIG. 1, 1 denotes a substrate made of LiNbO 3 , into which a
Koppelfläche 22 abgestrahlt.A
If, with a preselected waveguide, i.e. with a given n effo and a s at the preselected temperature T 0, a material for the prism is freely selected, in which the sizes n po and a p have possible values at the preselected temperature T o , then the corresponding prism angle δ from equation (3) and then from Glei chung (1) determine the associated coupling angle α. A prism made of such a material and provided with such a prism angle compensates for the temperature response of the refractive index n eff of the specific waveguide at least to a first approximation.
It can be seen very easily from FIG. 3 that for diffusion waveguides in LiNb0 3 neither with a prism made of LiNb0 3 (n po = 2.291 at T 0 = 20 ° C and a = 10 -5 1 / degree) nor with a rutile prism ( Ordinary refractive index n o = 2.586 and dn o / dT = -3.5 x 10 -5 1 / degree; extraordinary refractive index n e = 2.872 and dn e / dT = - 8 x 10 -5 1 / degree (see the above Data "Optical constants" Vol. II / 8)) a temperature-independent coupling is possible because the values given for both materials do not fall within the shaded area in FIG. 3 and are therefore not possible values. These two frequently used prism materials are therefore excluded in the special case and one would have to look for other suitable materials.
However, one can also build a prism coupler with prism materials unsuitable for individual prisms, in the special case mentioned with LiNb0 3 and rutile, in which the coupling angle α is temperature-independent. For this purpose, a prism composed of two or more prisms made of different materials is used.
A corresponding arrangement is shown in FIG. 4. In this arrangement, a
This
Das Vorsatzprisma 5 weist einen Brechungsindex nv = nvo + av·ΔT auf, wobei nvo den Brechungsindex bei der vorgewählten Temperatur To und av = dnv/dT/T=To bedeuten. The
For the combination of diffusion waveguide in LiNb0 3 , prism made of LiNb0 3 and attachment prism made of another material, equations (6) and (7) do not provide solutions for an attachment prism with the parameters of optical glasses, where n vo is approximately between 1.4 and 1.8 and a v are approximately between -10- 5 1 / grad and 10 -5 1 / grad (see for example optics catalog 3050/66, Jenaer Glaswerke Schott).
II/8).However, there are solutions for prisms made of optical plastics, in which n vo is approximately between 1, 4 and 1.7 and av is approximately between - 2x 10 -4 1 / grad and - 10 -4 1 / grad (see for example "Optical Constants "Vol. II / 8).
II/8).Polystyrene has proven to be a suitable plastic for an
In der Figur 5 ist ein Diagramm für die in Figur 4 dargestellte Prismenkombination dargestellt, aus dem jeweils drei Winkel, ein Koppelwinkel α, ein Prismenwinkel β des Vorsatzprismas aus Polystyrol und ein Prismenwinkel δ' des Prismas 4 aus LiNbO3 entnehmbar sind, bei denen der Koppelwinkel α temperaturunabhängig ist.FIG. 5 shows a diagram for the prism combination shown in FIG. 4, from which in each case three angles, a coupling angle α, a prism angle β of the attachment prism made of polystyrene and a prism angle δ ′ of the prism 4 made of LiNbO 3 can be found, from which the Coupling angle α is independent of temperature.
For a prism combination with a temperature-independent coupling angle α, in which the beam direction of the radiation to be coupled in or out is axial to the
