Abstract

The invention relates to a functional keyboard with complete identification of the present key allocation for, for example, pocket calculators, test equipment and typewriters etc. Keyboards having a plurality of functions and designations can be incorrectly operated, learning processes are difficult. The invention provides that, on operation of a functional key having two switches, the first switch is closed first and the function thus selected at that moment is indicated optically or audibly. The subsequent closing of the second switch causes the initiation of the function.

Description

The invention relates to a functional keyboard with signal device according to the preamble of claim 1. For data entry by the user of a technical device, such as Pocket calculators, measuring devices, handheld programming devices for industrial robots, driving data computers for motor vehicles.

In addition to the universal, standardized keyboards (typewriter, ten-digit keyboard), device-specific function keyboards are used to enter data into humans. With function keyboards, pressing a single button triggers a special function of the technical device.

In the function keyboards used today, the individual keys or the area between the keys have a character or a combination of characters to identify the associated function. Because of the lack of space, the dimensions of function keyboards are usually only chosen to be as large as is necessary due to the size of the operating human fingers, the individual function keys only have a space-saving designation in the form of an alphanumeric abbreviation of the associated function name or a symbol or even just one Color code on. There are also function keyboards where the individual keys can be assigned multiple functions, so that several labels must be placed on or next to the key. Using shift keys, the user selects the desired current keyboard function assignment here. This designation leads to the user having to learn the assignment between function names and keyboards based on the instructions for use of the technical device. Practical experience shows that this learning process is often only completed incompletely, and that the learned assignments are forgotten again, especially when used rarely. If the keys have multiple names, there is often uncertainty about the current status of assignment. This leads to incorrect operation or only partial use of the functions of the technical device. It is known to provide keyboards with a signaling device which generates an acoustic signal each time the data character assigned to this key has been correctly set in the data register and is available there during a keystroke. The signaling device is controlled by a sensing circuit (DE-OS 2262 004). However, the application of this solution to a function keyboard has the disadvantage that the signal device is only activated after the associated function has already been triggered by the actuation of a function key.

The invention has for its object to achieve a complete identification of the keys of a function keyboard without the space requirement of the keyboard is increased significantly and without the identification only after a function is triggered.

The advantages that can be achieved with the invention exist in that the user can make sure of the current key assignment and its detailed description before triggering a function. Furthermore, the space requirement of the keyboard in optical display is increased only by the area of the display common to all keys. With an acoustic display, there is no additional space requirement at all and there is the additional advantage of blind operation, ie the user can trigger functions without looking.

An embodiment of the invention is shown in Fig.1 and will be described in more detail below. Two signals are derived from the function keyboard 11 per key. The first signal displays the detailed description of the function, which can be triggered with the key. This signal reaches a decoder 12, the output of which is fed to a control device 13. The control unit reads out the function designation from the memory 14. The control designation 15 shows the function designation on the optical display 16 and / or makes it audible with the voice output 17. The second signal of the key is fed via the decoder 18 to the device 19 to be used, where the intended function is triggered.

Alphanumeric lines are suitable as optical display 16, the number of digits of which results from the longest function designation (light-emitting diode, liquid crystal, plasma displays and others). An alternative or a supplement to the visual display is the acoustic display 17 in the form of an output of synthetically generated or stored speech.

Fig. 2 shows an example of the execution of the buttons in cross section. When the button head 1 is pressed first closed via the spring 2 and the tube 3, the first switch 4, which causes the display of the function identification. When the button movement continues, the second switch 5 closes, which triggers the function of the device. The design of the effective spring forces is to be chosen so that there is tactile, ie perceptible feedback by the finger's sense of touch of the times of closing the two switches 4 and 5.

By querying the dwell time in the phase in which only the first switch 4 is closed, the voice output of the function name can also be suppressed, e.g. not to bother an experienced user. In this case, the speech output is suppressed when the button to the second switch 5 is pressed quickly. Another advantageous possibility is to cancel the voice output as soon as the second switch 5 is closed.

The combination of a sensor button and a mechanical button is also suitable for realizing the buttons with two switches. Furthermore, the position of the finger within the keypad can be determined by means of light barriers or by ultrasound location to display the function designation. In this case, only buttons with a switch are required for the subsequent function triggering.

Furthermore, it can be advantageous to give operating instructions with increasing detail when a key is pressed several times until the first switch is closed without the second switch being closed in between. For example, these instructions for a calculator's "STO" memory key are:
  • 1. "Save button"
  • 2. "To save the displayed number, press this key and then one of the keys O to 7."
  • 3. "The memory register is selected using the keys O to 7".

n. "Weitere Erläuterungen finden Sie im Benutzungshandbuch S. 71".n. "For further explanations, see the user manual p. 71".

The digits 1 .... n indicate the number of times the first button is pressed.

By pressing the first key switch in quick succession, individual user instructions can be canceled or skipped. Another possibility of calling up additional instructions for use is to evaluate the duration of the actuation of the first key switch.

In order to keep the scope of the visual display for the instructions for use small, longer texts can be displayed word by word or sequentially.
