Definitions

  • THIS INVENTION relates to a correcting device adapted to provide an obscuring layer over markings on sheet material such as paper, so as, in effect, to erase such markings and either leave the respective area of the sheet material blank, or provide a surface to receive amended markings.
  • markings may be, for example, symbols, letters, figures or other characters .or drawings which may be handwritten or typewritten.
  • a correcting device comprising a light-transmitting backing release sheet, at least one area of masking material carried on one face of the backing release sheet, the release sheet being of larger area than said area of masking material and each said area of masking material being adhesive, at least under pressure, at least on its face remote from the backing sheet, whereby by placing the release sheet over an area of a receiving sheet of which an area is to be masked, so that the masking material is disposed between the release sheet and the receiving sheet, and applying pressure over the area of the masking material on the face of the release sheet remote from the masking material, the area of masking material can be transferred to the receiving sheet.
  • the correcting device is placed over the sheet of which an area is to be masked, so that said area of masking material, or a selected said area, is located over the character or the like to be obscured, the light-transmitting backing sheet enabling accurate location of the strip since the area surrounding the character or the like to be obscured can be seen through the backing sheet.
  • Pressure is then applied, for example using the head of a ball-point pen, to the rear face of the backing sheet over the area of the strip overlying the character or the like to be obscured, to release the transfer from the backing sheet and cause it to adhere to the sheet material carrying the character or the like.
  • a plurality of strips of such masking material of different shapes and sizes can be provided on a single backing sheet.
  • a plurality of such strips may extend parallel to each other on a single backing sheet, and the different strips may be of different widths.
  • the correcting device illustrated in the drawings for correcting typing, writing or other marking on paper, comprises a rectangular sheet 10 of transparent, or translucent, material, for example translucent paper or translucent or transparent plastics film, carrying, on one face thereof, a plurality of areas 12 of a masking material, which conveniently takes the form of a thin flexible film of opaque material adhering weakly to the sheet 10 but having its face remote from the sheet 10 coated with a pressure- activated adhesive with a strong adhesion for paper.
  • Such material is known in conjunction with decorative transfers and . the like applicable by pressure to sheets of paper, etc.
  • the areas 12 of masking material are arranged in the form of rows, to provide, in effect, a plurality of parallel strips each of uniform width throughout its length but for narrow breaks at regular intervals therealong, said breaks separating the discrete areas 12, (i.e. dividing each strip into its respective plurality of discrete areas 12). At least the spacing between adjoining strips of areas 12 is substantial, so that when the sheet 10 is placed over a sheet of paper on which a correction is to be made, a substantial proportion of the surface of the sheet of paper is visible through the sheet 10.
  • the strips instead of consisting of discrete areas 12, may be continuous, or substantially so, but with lines of weakness formed at intervals across each strip to allow a part of the strip to separate readily from the remainder in use of the device.
  • the latter arrangement makes it possible, for instance, to apply a desired section of the strip, as a unit, to a line of type or the like to be masked, without the need to shift the sheet 10 for each letter. If the divisions between adjacent areas 12 in a single strip are made very narrow, the same effect may be achieved.
  • a siliconised, readily removable backing sheet 14 is provided on the adhesive side of the sheet 10, i.e. that on which the masking material is disposed, to prevent inadvertent adhesion of the masking material in storage etc.
  • the sheet 10 is placed over the sheet bearing the typed text, with the masking material lowermost, so that one of the strips extends longitudinally over the line of type to be dealt with, and the appropriate area of the strip, on the upper face of the sheet 10 is rubbed firmly, for example using the point of a ball-point pen, so as to press the areas 12 of the strip, over the appropriate section of the strip, strongly against the typed paper to adhere strongly to the paper.
  • the sheet 10 is then peeled away from the paper, leaving the appropriate section of the strip, comprising areas 12, adhering to the paper, masking the desired typed areas.
  • an amended text may then be typed over the applied section of the strip.
  • the sheet 10 may carry strips, (formed of areas 12 of masking material) of various different widths, e.g. to suit letters of different heights in a type face, or lower and upper-case letters.
  • areas of masking material 12 on the sheet 10 need not be arranged in rows or strips, but may comprise individual areas of various shapes, sizes, lengths or breadths.
  • areas 12 may be provided which are jointly or individually adapted to cover individual letters, lines of text, or whole paragraphs of text.
  • the preferred masking material presents, after application to a sheet of paper or other support in the manner described, a smooth flat exposed surface adapted to receive the markings of various kind of writing instruments such as typewriters, pens, pencils, felt and fibre-tipped pens etc.
  • the preferred masking material is non-toxic so that it can be used safely by children.
  • the masking material may be made available in various different colours, and, if desired, a single sheet 10 may carry different areas of masking material in a variety of colours.
  • the correcting device described has, inter alia, the following advantages:
