Eine Walze 1 mit beliebiger Temperaturverteilung und beliebigem Verschleiß über ihre Ballenlänge ist direkt nach dem Ausbau aus einem nicht dargestellten Walzgerüst auf eine Schleifmaschine 2 aufgesetzt worden. Vor Schleifbeginn wird die Temperaturverteilung üb er die Ballenlänge von Msßfühlern 3 gemessen, Diese Temperaturwerte und ihre Position auf der Ballenlänge der Walze 1 werden einem Rechner 4 zugeführt, der daraus ein Temperaturprofil der Walze 1 bildet. In Abhängigkeit von dem über die Eingabevorrichtung 5 in den Rechner 4 eingegebenen Durchmesser bei Raumtemperatur und dem Wärmeausdehnungskoeffizienten der Walze 1 bestimnt der Rechner 4 das Verschleißprofil der zu schleifenden Walze 1 und errechnet über das ebenfalls eingegebene gewünschte Walzenprofil (Hohl- oder Balligschliff mit definierten Abmessungen) die notwendige Schleifkurve und steuert danach die Schleifscheibe 6.A
