Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a security paper protected against counterfeiting and falsification, which has crushable microcapsules. which contain a leuco dye and is equipped with a color acceptor which reacts with the leuco dye to form or change colors, in which the microcapsules and the color acceptor are present in the interior of the paper pulp and the paper has two layers combined during production.
In commercial transactions, monetary values and claims to such monetary values are often represented by documents printed or written on paper. Such documents can e.g. Banknotes, checks or shares. In these and in all other cases where printed or written documents are of greater importance (certificates, passports, travel or flight tickets of great value), care must be taken to ensure that the content of such documents either does not change at all or only with great difficulty can be. This is usually achieved by tampering with such a document leaving visible traces that indicate the attempt to change it. For this purpose, reagents that are added to the paper are also used. Such reagents respond well to many attempts at adulteration with chemical agents. However, there is often a lack of security against attempted changes by mechanical erasing.
It is known to secure valuable prints against mechanical etching attempts by means of complicated background patterns, these background patterns being designed such that they are irreversibly changed or destroyed by etching attempts. Manipulations can thus be recognized by everyone without aids.
Such security techniques, however, can only be used to a limited extent, in particular in the case of machine-processable security prints, such as checks and the like, in the areas in which manipulations are preferably carried out (for example, OCR line), since in many cases such background patterns make the legibility of the machines to be processed machine-readable Data is disrupted.
It is also known to secure paper against mechanical erasing by assembling it from three differently colored layers. If you erase on the outer white layer of such paper, the color of the layer underneath appears more clearly, making the etching attempt obvious. Such papers can only be produced on machines specially made for this purpose and at relatively high cost. It is disadvantageous that the coloring of the layers and the associated opacity make it difficult to introduce a watermark if it is not rendered useless.
It is also known to secure a paper against erasure by producing it with the lowest possible density. Such paper then consists of a fairly loose fiber structure, in which etching attempts wreak havoc. The etching test is visible in this way, but such a voluminous paper usually does not have the strength values required for most applications.
Another possibility for protecting securities against mechanical erasing is described in DE-C-16 596. According to this, a security paper for checks and similar applications is already known, which consists of two layers of paper glued to one another and which bears a color print on the inner surfaces. In the case of mechanical erasure tests, the corresponding paper layer is removed, making it thinner; therefore the lines of the internal pressure stand out more clearly and the manipulation becomes recognizable. Because the inside print is also made with sensitive aniline inks that leak when using eraser fluids, such security paper is also protected against chemical erasing. However, paper according to this invention by no means meets the requirements that are placed on security paper today. The layers of paper stuck together can be split, making them relatively easy to forge and falsify.
The use of microcapsules to protect securities and ID cards is described in DE-A-23 23 076: the microcapsules are filled with liquid crystals which show a color change at certain temperatures that are reasonable for the security. These capsules only have the function of an authenticity feature; With its help, false certificates are to be distinguished from real securities. For this purpose, the security is exposed to a corresponding temperature, the otherwise invisible microcapsules becoming visible through their color change.
The microcapsules are not crushed in this test, so their shells can be made very stable. The well-known paper coated with the microcapsules does not in any way protect against mechanical erasure attempts and these microcapsules should also be of little value as an authenticity feature because the color change is too slow compared to the requirements customary in the industry and the color contrasts that can be achieved are not sufficient.
Finally, it is known to secure a security or security paper by applying microencapsulated leuco dyes to its surface, as is known from the art of copy paper. The application is done either over the entire surface by brushing or with suitable printing presses of very low contact pressure. If you erase in the protected areas, the mecha pressure destroys the microcapsule structure and the dye escapes. By reaction with certain color acceptors, a visible color is created, which proves the etching attempt.
Such security of securities is e.g. described in DE-C-26 000 781. Afterwards, tickets, flight tickets or tickets are coated with a coating that consists of a printing ink and embedded microcapsules with leuco dye. This coating covers only part of the surface of the security and also has the shape of a pattern, which preferably consists of stripes or wavy lines. The sample is located at the place that is intended for the stamping or labeling of the security and does not completely cover this either. When labeling, the microcapsules hit by the characters are destroyed in accordance with the pattern used, the leaking leuco dye reacts with the color acceptor present in the paper structure and becomes visible due to the subsequent color reaction. Subsequently, the information written can only be changed if the coating is completely removed.
The known paper does not fulfill all the wishes that are made of security paper that is protected against mechanical erasing. The microcapsules are only on the surface of the paper and are therefore almost on the same level as the printed information. Therefore, falsifications are not made difficult enough. If one removes only a sufficiently thick layer of the surface, one removes the information at the same time and the image of this information in the surface coating which secures this by the microcapsules; nevertheless, the paper remains thick enough at this point to be able to apply new, counterfeit information. If the surface coating can even be removed by chemical or mechanical means, the information printed over it is also removed with it, without the actual paper pulp being attacked. Since the person skilled in the art is familiar with the technology of producing and applying coatings with microcapsules which contain leuco dyes, a new coating can then be applied and the fake information can then be written in. For the same reason, the known security does not provide protection against total counterfeiting. Another disadvantage also relates to the arrangement of the microcapsules on the paper surface. The coating is not only at the level of the greatest mechanical loads, it is also particularly exposed to the effects of surface damage, such as scratching, etc. All of these effects lead to inadvertent discoloration of the security paper due to the loads to which it is subject in circulation.
From DE-A-1 267 961 it is already known to add microencapsulated leuco dyes and color acceptors to the pulp during papermaking. If the finished paper is subjected to a corresponding pressure, both the color capsule and the microcapsules containing the leuco dye burst, resulting in a visible color reaction and a discoloration that is not clearly defined inside the paper mass. Since the microcapsules are also present on the surface of the paper, there is a risk that even light contact with sharp-edged objects will destroy the microcapsules and thus cause an undesirable color reaction. The same applies to kinking, folding and other handling of the paper.
The invention is therefore based on the object of further developing a security paper of the known type such that, on the one hand, it is largely insensitive to normal handling, i.e. no undesired color reaction shows that, on the other hand, it shows a precisely defined color reaction corresponding to the pressurization when the pressure is applied accordingly.
According to the invention, this object is achieved by the features specified in the characterizing part of the main claim. Since, according to the invention, the location of the color reaction is relocated to the boundary layer of two layers of multilayer paper, discoloration due to unintended loads on the surface, such as scratching, scraping, etc. completely out.
Advantageous developments of the security paper according to the invention are the subject of the dependent claims.
The security paper according to the invention is produced in a manner known per se on a twin-wire machine. The prerequisite is that the wall thickness and strength of the microcapsules are coordinated with the production devices which mechanically load the paper so that the microcapsules are not destroyed during paper production (including the various pressing and drying processes).
The security produced by the above-mentioned manufacturing process is distinguished by particular advantages. When the paper is written on, the microcapsules under the characters are destroyed; the F p rb reaction takes place exclusively in the boundary plane, which is given by the two-layer manufacturing process. Only at this level are both reaction partners, at least one microencapsulated, present in close proximity.
When labeling, therefore, an image of the information applied is created in an inner level of the document. Naturally, this cannot be removed without permanently and clearly recognizable destruction of the paper structure. Because the introduction of the microcapsules in the As described above, assuming all the expenditure on equipment and the special know-how of security paper production, the color reaction in a certain inner level of the security paper is a reliable indicator of its authenticity, similar to how this is also demonstrated, for example, by a security thread.
Furthermore, embedding the microcapsules in the paper also means mechanical protection for the capsules. In the outer layers, which are naturally exposed to special loads, there are no reaction partners in the vicinity of the microcapsules with which the dye could react if the capsules were accidentally damaged. Although the reactive capsules inside the security are relatively well protected by the paper itself, the comparatively high pressure acting on them during the writing causes the microcapsules to be destroyed safely. If the information applied to a security according to the invention is removed by mechanical erasing, its image remains visible in the inner layer and thus clearly indicates a possible forgery.
Security paper produced in the manner described can be printed without destroying the microcapsules; with the exception of the steel gravure printing process, the printing processes usually used for the printing process are suitable.
By appropriately designing the relative thicknesses of the two paper layers, it can finally be achieved that the color reaction zone is more on the front or more on the back of the sheet. If, for example, the reaction zone is mainly placed on the back of the sheet, an attempt at forgery on the front will initially seem to succeed. Only an inspection of the back of the sheet would reveal the attempted forgery. On the other hand, moving the reaction layer on the front of the sheet would immediately reveal any tampering attack.

A pulp of 3% consistency and a freeness of 50 SR is produced from water, 50% spruce sulfite pulp and 50% pine sulfate pulp (bleached) by grinding in the Dutch. 5% titanium dioxide is added to this paper stock in the usual way. The paper stock is divided into two

First, a
It is the particular advantage of the invention that when the inscription produces an image of the inscription caused by the color reaction only in a certain inner plane 5, that the inner plane can be displaced within wide limits in paper volume by appropriate choice of layer thickness in papermaking and that this inner level cannot be exposed through manipulation such as division etc.
Due to the inaccessibility of the patterns created inside the paper, which cannot be simulated by coloring the paper, they serve as valuable authenticity indicators in the same way as security threads and similar embedding in the paper volume.
Due to the special choice of the position of the reaction zone in the paper volume, the security pattern can be moved more to the labeled surface or more to the back of the security paper and thus appear conspicuously or less conspicuously on the paper front.
Removing the pattern by mechanical erasing is not possible without clearly destroying the paper; the pattern cannot be changed due to the surrounding and thus protecting paper mass.
As in Example 1, paper is produced from two halves of paper stock on a twin-wire paper machine. In contrast to Example 1, however, the microencapsulated leuco dye is not added to the pulp, but is injected between the two webs after scooping and before the two webs have been combined (7). The microcapsules are preferably suspended in a liquid and blown onto the paper web through nozzles. Similar devices are known as ink jet recorders. Spraying or inflating the unsuspended dry microcapsules is also conceivable. As in Example 1, the color acceptor or reaction partner is again mixed into half of the paper stock.
The security paper produced in this way is shown schematically in FIG. 2.
Paper according to this embodiment of the invention is characterized in that the reaction zone is even narrower than is the case with papers according to Example 1.
The increased equipment complexity in paper production is offset by two advantages, which are of particular importance for a number of applications. On the one hand, this security is protected to a particularly high degree against unintentional and disruptive color reactions because the microcapsules are actually only in the level mentioned; secondly, only the device 8 allows the microcapsules to be brought into the paper in the form of patterns, be it strips, be it wavy lines or the like, under production-appropriate conditions. Security paper with such patterns has the great advantage of being able to be devalued in a particularly secure and elegant manner. For this purpose, the security paper is drawn between two press rollers; all microcapsules are destroyed and the pattern is clearly visible. The fact that the pattern becomes visible is also an indication of the authenticity of the security paper. Attempts to undo this devaluation or to hide it by erasing are futile. The limitation of the securing means according to the invention to a partial area is also a very effective measure to maintain the aesthetic quality of the security paper even under tougher loads.
Similar to Example 2, security paper is produced on a twin-wire paper machine, although the acidic reactive pigment is not added to half of the paper stock as in Example 2, but is sprayed through the device 8 between the two layers of paper, just like the microcapsules.
The paper produced in this way is shown schematically in FIG. 3. The color reaction zone has become even narrower than in Example 2, the advantages are the same, they only appear more pointedly. They are offset by a further increase in apparatus complexity in the paper production.
Of course, the invention is not limited to the examples described above.
You can also fill the microcapsule with a substance that only shows a fluorescence emission in the visible range of the optical spectrum after the reaction with its partner. This property can be used in addition to visible discoloration, but it can also be used advantageously to protect securities without further visible discoloration. Suitable dyes and reactants are described in FR-A-1 456 784.
Such a security is preferred to have an invisible pattern of its lettering on an inner level, which e.g. becomes visually recognizable when illuminated with ultraviolet light.
The security means according to the invention not only serve to protect against falsification by mechanical erasing, but also ensure the authenticity of the security paper. This is particularly evident when one thinks of counterfeit that are made by color copiers and with increasing frequency in the egg '. I can be observed on monetary papers. Such counterfeits are also easy to distinguish visually from originals that were produced according to Example 1, 2 or 3 and have a colored image of the information written down in an inner plane of the paper volume.
