Abstract
Description
- This invention relates to apparatus for supporting articles each having an aperture therein.
- It is known to provide apparatus for supporting articles each having an aperture therein, for example, articles of clothing having buckles, the apparatus comprising a cylindrical support, a plurality of elongate members located circumferentially of and extending radially outwardly of the support each for extending through the aperture of a corresponding one or more of said articles so that the or each said article is suspended therefrom, and movable means adapted to cooperate with the elongate members to restrain removal of said articles therefrom. An example of such apparatus is disclosed in FR-A-2 031 880.
- A disadvantage of such known apparatus is that it does not provide satisfactory security against pilferage of articles supported thereon. This is because the movable means which cooperates with the elongate members is common to all of the elongate members. In consequence, when the movable means is moved to a position such that an article or articles can be removed from or located on an elongate member, the movable means moves relative to all of the elongate members and, therefore, all of the articles located on the elongate members are at risk to being stolen.
- It is desirable, therefore, to provide apparatus for supporting articles each having an aperture therein, the apparatus having features which enhance security compared with apparatus known hitherto.
- Therefore, according to the present invention, there is provided apparatus for supporting articles each having an aperture therein, the apparatus being characterised in that the elongate members are hook-shaped and the movable means comprises a plurality of rods each co-operating with a corresponding one of the hook members and each being movable relative thereto from a first position to permit a said article to be located on or removed from said hook member and a second position preventing location of said article on or removal from said hook member and wherein there is provided means for selectively restraining movement of said rods.
- In this manner, each rod may be selectively restrained so that only a selected rod may be moved relative to a corresponding hook member so as to locate an article on or remove an article from the hook member, movement of the remaining rods relative to their associated hook members being restrained thereby preventing removal of articles from the remaining hook members.
- Following is a description, by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, of one method of carrying the invention into effect.
- In the drawings:-
- Figure 1 is a plan view of a device in accordance with the present invention;
- Figure 2 is a cross-section on the line A-A of Figure 1;
- Figure 3 is an exploded view of part of the device;
- Figure 4 is a diagrammatic view of the device prior to operation thereof for removal of an article therefrom;
- Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 4 wherein a key has been inserted in the device prior to operation thereof for removal of an article therefrom; and
- Figure 6 is a view similar to Figures 4 and 5 showing operation of the device for removal of an article therefrom.
- Referring to the drawings, there is shown a
device 10 for supporting an article having an aperture therein. The device comprises acylindrical support 11 comprising acircular base 12 and acircumferential wall 13 upstanding from thebase 12. Thebase 12 is provided with a tapped centralaxial aperture 14 and thewall 13 is provided with a plurality of circumferentially spacedradial apertures 15 and an upper radial aperture 16 of smaller diameter than theapertures 15. Theapertures 15 have received therein inner end portions oftubular members 17, thetubular members 17 extending radially outwardly from correspondingradial apertures 15. Thetubular members 17 have secured to outer ends thereofarms 18, each arm comprising anelongate portion 19 having aninner limb 20 upstanding from one end portion of thearm 18 and anouter limb 21 upstanding from an outer end portion of thearm 18. Theinner limb 20 of eacharm 18 is welded to an outer end surface of a correspondingtubular member 17. Theouter limb 21 of eacharm 18 has anaperture 22. Eachtubular member 17 has received longitudinally therein arod 23, the dimensions of each of the rods being greater than the combined length of a correspondingtubular member 17 andelongate portion 19 of thearm 18 associated therewith but being less than the distance from the central longitudinal axis of thesupport 11 to theouter limb 21 of eacharm 18. Therods 23 are movable longitudinally of the correspondingtubular member 17 and through theaperture 22 of theouter limb 21 of thecorresponding arm 18. - The
aperture 14 in thebase 12 of thesupport 11 is received on an upper end portion of aspindle 24. Thespindle 24 is located axially in abore 26 in an upper end portion of atubular stand 25. Thespindle 24 is provided in a midportion thereof with acircumferential groove 27. Thestand 25 is provided with a tappedrecess 28 in which is received ascrew 29 an inner end portion of which is located in thegroove 27 of thespindle 24 thereby to locate the spindle rotatably axially in thestand 25 so that an upper end portion of thespindle 24 extends beyond an adjacent end portion of thestand 25. The upper end portion of thespindle 24 is screw-threaded and is thereby adapted to engage the tappedaperture 14 in thebase 12 of thesupport 11. Awasher 30 is located on thestand 25, the end portion of thespindle 24 extending through an aperture of the washer. The 11 is located so that the screw-threaded end portion of thespindle 24 is received in the tappedaperture 14 of thebase 12 of thesupport 11 and thesupport 11 is screwed onto thespindle 24 so that thewasher 30 is located between thesupport 11 and thestand 25. Thesupport 11 is secured to thespindle 24 by anut 31 which is screwed onto an end of thespindle 24 extending inwardly of an inner surface of thebase 12 of thesupport 11. - The
circumferential wall 13 of thesupport 11 is provided on an inner surface thereof with a recess (not shown) containing a helical spring (not shown) adapted to co-operate with aball 32 to urge the ball radially inwardly of thesupport 11. - The
support 11 is adapted to co-operate with acylindrical head 33 having an outer circumferentialrecessed wall 34, acircumferential rim 35 extending radially outwardly above thewall 34, a circumferentialinner wall 36, anupper surface 37 and alower surface 38. Theouter surface 34 is provided with acircumferential groove 39. Thelower surface 38 is provided with a radial groove 40 adapted to receive longitudinally a portion of any one of therods 23. - The
head 33 is provided with a central longitudinal bore 41 in which there is received a barrel lock 42 having aspindle 43 depending therefrom. The lock 42 has aslot 44 for receiving akey 45, theslot 44 being adjacent theupper surface 37 of thehead 33. Thespindle 43 of the lock 42 has a depending lower portion thereof which is screw threaded and is adapted to receive anut 46. Thespindle 43 carries ablocking bar 47 having an aperture (not shown) at one end portion thereof for receiving thespindle 43 of the lock 42. Theblocking bar 47 is located on thespindle 43 and is secured thereto by thenut 46 so that the longitudinal axis of theblocking bar 47 extends radially of thespindle 43. Theouter wall 34 of thehead 33 is provided with a plurality of circumferentially spacedrecesses 48, each adapted to receive theball 32. - The dimensions of the
head 33 are such that the head is received in thesupport 11 with therim 35 seating on an upper surface of thesupport 11, thecircumferential groove 39 being located radially inwardly of the small bore aperture 16 in thecircumferential wall 13 of thesupport 11 and therecesses 48 extending opposite a circumferential portion of an inner surface of the wall containing theball 32. - The
head 33 is retained in thesupport 11 by means of a pin 49 which is inserted in the small bore aperture 16 so as to extend into thegroove 39. Theupper surface 37 of thehead 33 is provided with an indexingmark 50 located on an axis extending parallel to a longitudinal axis of the groove 40. The groove 40 is arranged such that when thehead 33 is rotated in thesupport 11 so that the indexing mark is adjacent a selected one of therods 23 and theblocking bar 47 does not extend across the groove 40, the selected rod may be moved axially inwardly of the groove 40 towards the longitudinal axis of thehead 33. - The barrel lock 42 is arranged such that the
spindle 43 can be rotated relative to thehead 33 only on insertion of thekey 45 in theslot 44 and can be withdrawn from theslot 44 only when theblocking bar 47 extends across the groove 40. In this position of theblocking bar 47, the blocking bar prevents insertion of arod 23 longitudinally of the groove 40, the longitudinally axis of theslot 44 in a plane parallel to theupper surface 37 of thehead 33 is at right angles to the longitudinal axis of theblocking bar 47. - Referring now to Figures 4 to 6 of the drawings, the
head 33 of thedevice 10 is rotatable relative to thesupport 11 on an axis coaxial with the longitudinal axis of thespindle 43 of the lock 42. As thehead 33 moves relative to thesupport 11, the groove 40 of thehead 33 is successively located adjacent inner ends of therods 23 by theball 32 which successively engages therecesses 48. However, therods 23 cannot be moved inwardly of thesupport 11 because an adjacent end wall of each rod will either engage theouter surface 34 of thehead 33 or will engage an outer end wall of theblocking bar 47. - When it is required to locate on an
arm 18 an article having a buckle, such as a belt, thehead 33 is rotated until the indexingmark 50 is adjacent arod 23 associated with the arm as shown in Figure 4. Thekey 45 then is inserted in theslot 44, as shown in Figure 5. Thehead 33 is then held in the position shown in Figure 5 and thekey 45 is turned so that theslot 44 is in line with the indexingmark 50 on thehead 33. The movement of the key 45 results in theblocking bar 47 being moved from the position shown in Figures 4 and 5 in which the blocking bar extends across the groove 40, through 90° to the position as shown in Figure 6. Therod 23 adjacent the groove 40 then is moved in a longitudinal direction inwardly of the groove 40. Movement of therod 23 provides a gap between an outer end portion of therod 23 and anouter limb 21 of thearm 18 corresponding to theselected rod 23 as shown in Figure 2. The buckle of the belt then can be hooked over theouter limb 21 of thearm 18 and moved longitudinally of theelongate portion 19 and located thereon so that the belt is suspended from theelongate portion 19 of the arm. Alternatively, the buckle of a belt already suspended from the elongate portion of the arm may be moved axially of theelongate portion 19 and unhooked from theouter limb 21 thereby to remove the belt from thearm 18. - The displaced
rod 23 then is moved axially in a direction out of the groove 40 so that the outer end portion of therod 23 extends through theaperture 22 of theouter limb 21 of thecorresponding arm 18. Thehead 33 then is held while thekey 45 is turned in a reverse direction so that theslot 44 is at right angles to theindex mark 50 on thehead 33, as shown in Figure 5. In this position theblocking bar 47 extends across the groove 40 and prevents movement of theselected rod 23 inwardly of thehead 33. Thekey 45 then is removed from thehead 33, as shown in Figure 4.
