- the bead 9 of the steel ring 4 facing the vanadium ring 5 allows the steel which melts much earlier than the vanadium to flow away less quickly when it is welded onto the vanadium ring. No other material is fed in during welding. It should also be noted that the vanadium ring does not melt, as this leads to changes in the crystal structure and to undesired embrittlement of the weld seam.
- the finished electron exit window consisting of titanium foil 6, vanadium ring 5 and steel ring 4, can then be applied to the steel ring in a known manner
- the radiation exit side of the acceleration tube 3, which is usually made of copper, is soldered on.
Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a radiation exit window for the electrons accelerated in an evacuated acceleration tube.
It is common practice to provide the accelerated tubes of electron accelerators with stainless steel beam exit windows. Since these radiation exit windows have to withstand the full atmospheric pressure, a certain wall thickness cannot be undershot. In addition, the wall thickness can not be reduced as much as desired for manufacturing reasons, because otherwise the window can no longer be welded sufficiently reliably vacuum-tight on the outlet flange of the acceleration tube.
Since the absorption coefficient of such windows for electron radiation is not to be neglected, it is necessary, especially with high radiation densities, to provide water cooling for the radiation exit window. For this purpose, radiation exit windows are already known, which have two 0.25 mm thick stainless steel foils attached at a short distance of only a few millimeters, the space between which water flows through. With such intensive cooling, local overheating and melting of the radiation exit window, which would ultimately lead to a gas collapse in the acceleration tube, can be shifted towards higher electron beam densities. However, this means that an additional window level and an additional energy loss are accepted.
It has already been proposed to use a single stainless steel foil for the window and only to cool the flange to which this foil is welded. In this case, however, it is necessary to reduce the diameter of the window as much as possible in order to be able to dissipate as much heat per unit time as possible to the flange. With such windows there would still be a risk that the heat would not be dissipated quickly enough from the point of impact of the electrons, so that the window would melt at a point and be perforated locally.
The invention has for its object to develop a radiation exit window for acceleration tubes, which is to be welded on in a vacuum-tight manner, the elec-. The electron beam weakens as little as possible and has as little tendency to melt locally and thereby leak.
In the case of a radiation exit window of the type mentioned in the introduction, the exit is therefore according to the invention Opening of the acceleration tube is enclosed by a steel ring soldered onto the acceleration tube and a vanadium ring welded to the steel ring and closed by means of a titanium foil welded onto the vanadium ring. This design has the great advantage that a material is used that combines a relatively low specific absorption coefficient with a high melting temperature. For a given wall thickness, the relatively low absorption coefficient for electron radiation not only leads to less energy loss of the electrons, it also leads to a lower thermal load on the film per volume element. The higher melting temperature not only makes premature melting of the window less likely, it also makes it possible to dissipate larger amounts of heat without additional cooling due to the heat radiation of a black heater that increases with the fourth power of the temperature, combined with the higher permissible operating temperature. The vanadium ring inserted between the titanium foil and the steel ring is a technological prerequisite for being able to weld the titanium foil in a vacuum-tight manner.
The connection of the steel ring with the vanadium ring is significantly facilitated if the steel ring in the embodiment of the invention is provided with a shoulder for guiding the vanadium ring. In this way, there is no risk that the parts move against each other during the welding process. This makes special clamping devices superfluous. The same applies if, in another embodiment of the invention, the vanadium ring is provided with a shoulder for guiding the steel ring.
In a particularly expedient development of the invention, the steel ring can be reinforced on its edge adjoining the vanadium ring. This gives increased security in the technologically difficult connection of the steel ring with the vanadium ring. Above all, the running away of the more easily melting steel is delayed during the welding process because the edge reinforcement absorbs more heat and more steel is available.
Further details of the invention are explained with reference to an embodiment shown in the figure.
The figure shows a cut view of the radiation exit window according to the invention.
A steel ring 4 is soldered in front of the radiation exit opening 1 of the
When creating the window, the titanium foil 6 must first be cut to a diameter that is adapted to the outer diameter of the vanadium ring. The cut titanium foil is placed on a suitable
If the titanium foil 6 is welded onto the
The finished electron exit window, consisting of titanium foil 6,
