- the focus distance should always be optimally adjustable to the respective distance of the examination site from the transducer surface.
- the focal width and the opening angle of the sound radiation field should also be as small as possible so that the lateral resolution is optimal becomes.
- the influence of side lobes of the sound radiation field should be as small as possible.
- the ultrasonic transducers produced according to the method are also only designed for continuous sound, but not for pulse-echo operation. When used in pulse-echo mode, larger values for the focus distance and focus width or aperture angle automatically and inevitably result, which is actually undesirable.
- the lateral resolution can be improved by setting the focus and opening angle of the sound radiation field behind the focus as small as possible.
- the ultrasonic transducer shown in FIG. 2 on the side 82 of the attachment is constructed in a ring-shaped manner, the ring on the side 84 in accordance with FIG. 4 consisting of individual successive sub-elements.
- the ring shape of the transducer favors the formation of interference structures. This results in relatively strong focusing and a small aperture angle and thus also good lateral resolution.
- the increased presence of interference structures entails an increase in the influence of side lobes. -These side lobes lead to image distortions.
- An ultrasonic transducer manufactured according to the method according to the invention is then characterized according to the invention in that a vibrating molded part defined according to steps a) and b) in the outer dimension and in the radius of curvature of the focusing by means of a mechanical recess (for example a through hole or surface-side contact layer recess) of a part of the vibrating material or one at least electrically in one vibrator divided into individual beam surfaces is cut out by electrically switching off individual surface parts in the active surface.

Abstract
The invention relates to a method for producing ultrasonic transducers, with a focusing ultrasonic transducer with a recess in the active surface. It is desirable to design the converter in such a way that optimum values of the focus width and the focus distance result in optimal lateral resolution with the least possible influence of side lobes. This is achieved by manufacturing in the following steps: a) for first focus width (FB) or focus distance (FA) depending on the radius of curvature (R) of the vibrator (1; 5) its outer dimension (2aO) or depending on the outer dimension ( 2aO) the radius of curvature (R) is determined; b) the size of the outer dimension or radius of curvature, which has not yet been determined, is then determined for the other of the two focus sizes (e.g. FA); c) the resulting maximum value of the opening angle of the sound radiation field behind the focus is narrowed by a suitable choice of size (2aO) of the recess (2, 8) in the active surface of the transducer so that the relationship between the opening angle and side lobes is optimal.
Description
The invention relates to a method for producing ultrasonic transducers, with at least one ultrasonic transducer, the active surface of which is artificially focused by means of aids and whose sound radiation field should be predefinable according to the focus distance, focus width and aperture angle following the focus and ultrasonic frequency.
In ultrasound technology, especially in the electromedical field or in the field of material testing, there is a desire for optimal adaptation of the sound radiation field of the respective ultrasound transducer to the circumstances. For example, the focus distance should always be optimally adjustable to the respective distance of the examination site from the transducer surface. The focal width and the opening angle of the sound radiation field should also be as small as possible so that the lateral resolution is optimal becomes. The influence of side lobes of the sound radiation field should be as small as possible. Ultimately, all of these conditions should exist for any application, for example for ultrasound devices with or without a water inlet section or other training. Known methods for producing ultrasonic transducers have so far not allowed a clearly optimal coordination between the focus distance, focus width and opening angle of the sound radiation field, as is actually desired. The magazine "Journal of Acoustical Society of America", vol. 44, no. 5, 1968 on pages 1310 to 1318, but in particular on page 1312, such a manufacturing process in which the individual values cannot be specified and varied separately from one another. The ultrasonic transducers produced according to the method are also only designed for continuous sound, but not for pulse-echo operation. When used in pulse-echo mode, larger values for the focus distance and focus width or aperture angle automatically and inevitably result, which is actually undesirable. In ultrasonic transducers, the lateral resolution can be improved by setting the focus and opening angle of the sound radiation field behind the focus as small as possible. In the case of ultrasonic transducers with or without a water inlet section, it is known that a small opening angle can be achieved by enlarging the active transducer area or by specifying a weaker radius of curvature for the artificial focusing (mechanical or electronic) of the transducer. However, an enlarged active transducer area or a weaker radius of curvature always lead to a broadening of the sound radiation field in the focus and behind it. The result is a deterioration in the lateral resolution both in the focus and in the investigation area behind the sound field. Apart from these measures, ie So if the transducer surface is reduced or if the focus is more artificially, the lateral resolution directly in focus is improved. Immediately behind the focus, however, the lateral resolution deteriorates rapidly, since the aperture angle is now considerably larger than before. In this sense, this also applies to the suggestions made in the article "A real-time B-scanner with improved lateral resolution" by CB Burckhardt et al for the production of highly focused transducers. For example, the spherically curved oscillator shown in FIG. 1 on page 82 is geometrically strongly focused, so that for different dB lobes there are foci close together and thus good lateral resolution in this area. However, behind this focus area there is a very large aperture angle, which rapidly worsens the lateral resolution again. The area of good lateral resolution is thus undesirably restricted to a study area that is far too small. The ultrasonic transducer shown in FIG. 2 on the side 82 of the attachment is constructed in a ring-shaped manner, the ring on the side 84 in accordance with FIG. 4 consisting of individual successive sub-elements. The ring shape of the transducer favors the formation of interference structures. This results in relatively strong focusing and a small aperture angle and thus also good lateral resolution. However, the increased presence of interference structures entails an increase in the influence of side lobes. -These side lobes lead to image distortions.
It is an object of the present invention to design ultrasonic transducers in such a way that optimal values of the focal width and the focal distance can be given optimal lateral resolution with the least possible on flow of side lobes.
- a) für die vorgebbaren zwei Fokusgrößen Fokusbreite und Fokusabstand wird in Abhängigkeit entweder vom Krümmungsradius des Ultraschallschwingers dessen Außenabmessung oder in Abhängigkeit von der Außenabmessung der Krümmungsradius für zuerst eine der beiden Fokusgrößen festgelegt;
- b) bei der so festgelegten Außenabmessung oder dem so festgelegten Krümmungsradius wird dann für die andere der beiden vorgebbaren Fokusgrößen die noch nicht bestimmte Größe Krümmungsradius bzw. Außenabmessung festgelegt;
- a) for the predeterminable two focus sizes, the focus width and focus distance, depending on either the radius of curvature of the ultrasonic oscillator, its outer dimension or, depending on the outer dimension, the radius of curvature for one of the two focus sizes;
- b) in the case of the outer dimension or the radius of curvature thus determined, the not yet determined size of the radius of curvature or outer dimension is then determined for the other of the two specifiable focus sizes;
- c) The maximum value of the opening angle of the sound radiation field behind the focus, which results for the external dimension and radius of curvature according to steps a) and b), is finally narrowed by making a recess in the active surface of the ultrasonic oscillator of such a size that there is an optimal ratio between the opening angle and the side lobes of the Sound radiation field results.
An ultrasonic transducer manufactured according to the method according to the invention is then characterized according to the invention in that a vibrating molded part defined according to steps a) and b) in the outer dimension and in the radius of curvature of the focusing by means of a mechanical recess (for example a through hole or surface-side contact layer recess) of a part of the vibrating material or one at least electrically in one vibrator divided into individual beam surfaces is cut out by electrically switching off individual surface parts in the active surface.

- First, focus width F B and focus distance F A are specified in their optimal values for the desired application. However, the focus width F B , like the focus distance F A , is a function of the radius of curvature R of the focusing and the
outer dimension 2a 0 of the transducer. This results in the relationship for the focus width (based on a certain number of vibrations within the excitation and / or echo pulse)
In this case, in complete frequency independence automatically determined from the relative Fokusbrei- R N te F B / a 0 and the normalized focus on pro s from s t F and A / 0th In this way, however, the correct dimension for the
Es ist deutlich zu ersehen, daß der die Erfindung betreffende Verlauf I der lateralen Auflösung in sämtlichen drei Diagrammen im interessierenden Eindringtiefenbereich von etwa 0 bis 13 cm deutlich besser verläuft als die Verläufe II und III solcher Ultraschallwandler, die nach herkömmlichen Verfahren hergestellt wurden.FIG. 3 shows a practical exemplary embodiment for a ring oscillator according to FIG. 1, which for example has an outer diameter 2a0 = 40 mm and an inner recess with a diameter of 2a for the operating frequency of f = 3.5 MHz . = 13 mm. The radius of curvature is determined with R = 242 mm. The diagrams to the left show from top to bottom for the -6dB lobe, the -20dB lobe and the -40dB lobe of the sound radiation field the curves of the lateral resolution La (mm) over the penetration depth which result with this oscillator according to the invention Te (cm) of the ultrasound in the study area. It can clearly be seen that the course I of the lateral resolution relating to the invention proceeds significantly better in all three diagrams in the penetration depth range of about 0 to 13 cm of interest than the courses II and III of such ultrasonic transducers which were produced by conventional methods.
According to this alternative example, the ultrasonic vibrator in the form of an
